I know we've dealt with this before but I still disbelieve that the industrial chemists dont know about something I can put in my tank that doesnt have tell-tale dies in it that my deisel engine will fire, with or without additives, that avoids me contributing to the governments idle scrote subsidy scheme.
As I have previously observed,my heating oil appears to be clear, why cannot I therefore use it?
I'm not remotely concerned with legality, only checkability,I believe that any citizen has a right to avoid unreasonable taxation. Read more

Does anyone know of a Scrapyard in the Sheffield area which deals in parts for old caravans ? I am after some parts for an old - 1978 - Elddis mistral 2 berth which I have inherited - the wood frame of the door is rotten but the rest of it is apparently sound and It will cost more than this caravan is worth to buy a brand new door.

or maybe I will get the jigsaw out and try to make a new frame

Do people scrap old caravans or do they end up as hot dog stalls ? Read more

Marcus,

There is no such thing as a caravan scrapyard - they usually end up stewn across the nearby M5 with alarming regularity. One such incident last week had the M5 Southbound carriageway closed for some considerable time and caused some traffic mayhem in the morning rush hour.

I guess they end up in the local council dump.

My three and a half year old (37k miles) Espace diesel has suffered a complete engine failure. An independant engineers report blames this on an inherant manufacturing defect. Renault claims this is unique and is offering to contribute a pittance towards the cost of repair. Anyone know diferent? Read more

Three and a half million Trobby owners had no option to be right, wrong,or indifferent. If they wanted a car they got a Trobby!
In the days when I had a lot of space I considered putting in a sort of perimeter road and buying a Trobby to go round inspecting my plantings in.
Because it had a roof.....

EGR systems.
I forgot to mention them earlier.
You disconnect them.
Until a bit before your MOT test.
They are as big a nonsense as a catalyst.
Soot filters make more sense, all buses and HGv's should have them, now.
All you do is change one pollutant for another, you cant win,and at the normal concentrations found in mormal places it doesnt matter.
In big cities and places with weird climates then the electric taxi is entirely adequate. You can always let the trucks unload at night until a better option evolves,Hydrogen may be good, but what pollution is produced in its production I wonder.

Mondeo TD Estate. (yes that one again with the probable fuel filter issue a few days ago). (I caused this problem before the filter seems to have gone worng but they are not linked)

In todays no blame culture I will say it was 50/50 but I dont really believe it !Anyway, I hit the kerb with a crunch. The tyre bod who checked the tracking and steering couldnt believe I had got away without much damage when he checked the alignment. In truth I did not get away with it but neither he nor all his colleagues spotted it. I am of course talking about the suspension arm, which they said seemed fine.

Finally (lacking all trust in anyone these days but knowing nothing myself I had a look and I can easily see it is twisted, god knows how they didnt. And not only that but two other goons in the main dealership that messed up the filter change did not see it either (I only went to the dealer as it is on the way to work, never again except to get them to fix the filter issue).

I checked it today from the rear and it is not easy to see due to no clear daylight behind of it, but looking from the front with daylight making it clear it is badly twisted. So, finally, to the point.

Any idea what sort of price I should be forking out to have this fixed. One off the cuff quote from a friend at work was about £40 for the part, so how many hours labour am I looking at?

Any ideas anyone? Read more

instead of lower it off the subframe and fitting the new arm that way, it has been said to me that cutting the bolt and fitting a new one in the reverse direction is quicker and easier, (therefore cheaper) and it is not in any way less safe?

Is that pure fanstasy and is it to be avoided at all costs, which is what is sounds like to me

why don't range rover and all the others admit that for 95% of users the low ratio gear box is pure bullshit and is never going to be used. It reminds me of the emperor's new clothes - if they offered a single ratio model the myth would be exploded and they would have to admit that they are overwhelmingly used in the suburbs.

The last time I looked, this was still a free country, where we can buy what we like. Drivers of large, thirsty 4X4's pay a higher purchase price and pay more tax on fuel for their choice.

Some do need the vehicles, some just like them. Crossing a muddy field and driving muddy tracks can be accomplished by normal cars and soft roaders, but for more, you may need something more substantial. Some like to take them off-road for pleasure and sport, but also use them for everyday transport as well.
