why don't range rover and all the others admit that for 95% of users the low ratio gear box is pure bullshit and is never going to be used. It reminds me of the emperor's new clothes - if they offered a single ratio model the myth would be exploded and they would have to admit that they are overwhelmingly used in the suburbs.
Even country dwellers hardly ever have cause to go up or down a 45 degree slope for god's sake!!!!!!!

Because if you do need it, you need it.
If you try a freelander off road, you will soon find that it's lack of low ratio causes a few problems, usually resulting in the clutch suffering. Plus, they have had to add Hill Descent Control to make up for the lack of engine braking.

The last time I looked, this was still a free country, where we can buy what we like. Drivers of large, thirsty 4X4's pay a higher purchase price and pay more tax on fuel for their choice.
Some do need the vehicles, some just like them. Crossing a muddy field and driving muddy tracks can be accomplished by normal cars and soft roaders, but for more, you may need something more substantial. Some like to take them off-road for pleasure and sport, but also use them for everyday transport as well.

Why don't they do what Honda does with the HRV, what Toyota does with the RAV-4 and what every manufacturer does for the Indonesian marker: Offer big butch 4x4s with two wheel drive?

And the Americans do with some of their "butch" machines. The Chevy Tahoe looks like a big 4x4, but most are sold as RWD only versions!

I am an angler, part of the duties my cars are required perform involve dragging medium sized boats up steep launching ramps, and traversing muddy terrain.
In the last 35 years of this sort of usage I have found that two wheel drive is entirely adequate.
My local Tesco is also on a slope, and even today, in the rain ,I achieved the purchase of large quantities of dog food withot noticeable wheelspin.
It is,of course, possible that I am an immensely talented driver, although my otherwise adoring blonde wife appears not to have noticed this in,also, the last 35 years.....
Lets get serious here,my old chum Neil Bowser, who owns large amounts of Scottish Highland which he rents out to stalking parties, needs 4wd vehicles.
He seems to find small.cheap, Subarus adequate.
I put it to you that the rest of you need 4wd vehicles like the Pope needs condoms.

Is it not irreverent to keep referring to the poor Pope's advanced years?
