A Grand Monday: Ford Focus Millennium 1 May 2017 (News)
For example, a Mk1 Mondeo Si in the even bolder hue of Citrine Yellow is quite a collectable thing these days, and was built in similar numbers. It's also a great car to drive. If you're looking for a useable family car that will not only do everything you need it to do, but also prove itself to be a thoroughly rewarding drive, you've found it. This example is about as good as you'll get for an old Focus. 60,000 miles with a full service history, seemingly rot-free and immaculately presented. Yes, it's a Mk 1 Focus, and yes, they're still a common (though increasingly less common) sight on our roads. -
1972 Toyota Crown Custom returned to the road 20 Feb 2017 (News)
Indeed, Mr. Cole kept the dealership’s running-in sticker in the rear window as a visible excuse for driving slowly. Mr. Cole had an infectious enthusiasm for his Crown, a passion inherited from his father who owned the previous generation model – and one he passed on to his son. Percy Junior stored and maintained this Crown for more than a decade after his father’s death. -
BMW M3s in demand at September sale 28 Sep 2016 (News)
The auction hall was packed out once again and buyers clearly liked the selection, variety and value of cars we had on offer.’ Collectors of older classic cars fought over a number of special examples. An original, right-hand drive 1946 MG TC Midget, sold after a long bidding war for £35,750, more than £13,000 over its lower estimate. A 1942 Willys Jeep, restored by the Wheeler Dealers boys, sold for an impressive £28,600. -
Four in ten drivers admit to speeding in 20mph zones 6 Sep 2016 (News)
But a driver travelling at 20mph should just be able to stop in time, providing they are paying attention, have well-maintained brakes and are driving in dry conditions. It's something many drivers are aware of and yet more than a quarter of drivers surveyed say they exceed a 20mph limit at least once a month and over one in five admit to driving much faster than the 20mph speed limit on a weekly basis. -
A Grand Monday: Volvo 340 18 Jul 2016 (News)
It’s a retro rear-drive Volvo for this week’s Grand Monday. The 340, powered by a Renault-sourced 1.7-litre engine, was never intended to be the Swedish manufacturer’s entry into the compact hatchback sector, but following Volvo’s acquisition of DAF in the mid-1970s, it was already well down the development stage… Volvo added some convention to the mix. -
Paris introduces classic car ban 20 Jun 2016 (News)
It previously experimented with halving the number of cars in the city by only allowing those with even-numbered licence plates for one day in March, 2015. From the beginning of July, all car owners driving in to Paris will have to register and obtain the correct window sticker for their vehicle. If their car is too old to be allowed in, or if they drive within the restricted area without a sticker, they are liable to a fine of between €35 and €450 (£27-£349). -
A Grand Monday: Alfa 146 31 May 2016 (News)
Angular Giugiaro lines, matched with punchy Boxer engines from the outgoing 33 made the 146, along with the three-door 145, an entertaining (albeit leftfield) choice of mid-size hatch from 1995 until 2001. It was also quite an entertaining car to drive – the torquey, free-revving nature of the engines encouraging you to press on and discover that, despite its humble origins, Fiat Group’s ‘Tipo Due’ (or Type Two) platform was actually a pretty decent chassis. -
A Grand Monday: Fiat Tempra, £375 16 May 2016 (News)
It has covered less than 70,000 miles, the body and interior both look excellent, and there are no horrors lurking in its MoT history to suggest there’s anything serious that’s going to prevent it from sailing through any future tests. They drive okay, too. As a quirky, family friendly retro runabout, you could do a lot worse, as like all Italian cars, Tempras respond well to vigorous inputs. The chassis has impressive grip, with oodles of controllable understeer, the engine is lively and responsive, at least aurally (we’re talking 78bhp here, so don’t expect miracles) and the cabin has style, even if the driving position is better suited to those who are permanently disfigured. -
Celebrate 30 years of the Sinclair C5 2 Jan 2015 (News)
An electric motor powered the left-hand rear wheel, helping the C5 to reach 15mph – its top speed, as restricted by law. Anyone over the age of 14 could drive one and no driving licence was required. Built by Hoover at the firm’s factory in Merthyr, Wales – prompting incorrect rumours that it was powered by a washing machine motor – each C5 was supplied to its new owners in a cardboard box. -
A Grand Monday: Austin Montego 2.0 Mayfair 27 Oct 2014 (News)
Conventional engineering aided its appeal to fleet buyers, while decent equipment levels and impressive front-drive handling made it popular enough among sales reps. Who remembers the classic Montego TV ad, with Russ Swift as the sales rep driving up on two wheels across the company car park? The later addition of a turbo-diesel Montego boosted fleet sales, while the extreme roominess of the estate version ensured that this was also a popular choice. -

The vendor clearly appreciates the qualities of his Range Rover, reporting that it “is a superb car to drive, does not wander and remains sure-footed under modern driving conditions.” With the 300Tdi engine, fuel consumption is now 34mpg, apparently. Report: Peking to Paris, day 17 14 Jun 2013 (News)
We spotted a fuming crew member of the Citroen DS having navigation problems driving the lift to the superb dinner tonight… never mind the lift buttons, the Citroen in the car park is showing signs of another hydraulic issue, this time the front is stuck in maximum height mode. -
Report: Peking to Paris, day 11 8 Jun 2013 (News)
The car is highly original, even most of the stickers, and its failure is just an age thing. If only the Citroen was more simple!' Gerry Crown was driving hard today – he spun the big V8 Leyland P76. He happens to own the ex-Evan Green P76 that also drove in the 1974 World Cup Rally, and is here with a replica. The oldest car in the event, the 1913 Model T Ford, had one disaster after another yet still the crew keep turning up for dinner. -
Music Business Mini to Star in Barons Christmas Classic Auction 3 Dec 2012 (News)
The car has had just six keepers from new; three of whom were the same man. The vendor first acquired the car in 1973. He used to drive around in it with Steve Marriott of Small Faces and Humble Pie fame, who described the Mini as ‘a 100mph pair of shades’. In the late 70s the vendor sold the car to Denny Lane (of Moody Blues and Wings), but after just eight months he bought it back to restore it. -
VW to Support GTI International 23-24 June 31 May 2012 (News)
There is also a handling course, promoted by Bilstein and Eibach with support from Hankook tyres, where entrants can test their driving skills against the clock on a challenging slalom course. Rather more sedate but no less popular is the ‘Show 'n' Shine', sponsored by Meguiar's, which features hundreds of the country's top show cars, many highly modified and customised, while others are preserved in immaculate standard classic condition. -
Volkswagen's new chassis explained 2 Feb 2012 (News)
Well it represents a big change in the design and production of cars with transverse-mounted engines - this is the set up that the vast majority of modern front-wheel drive cars have. The fact it's a modular platform means that models that use it can be built together - even if they're difference brands. This means that in theory models as diverse as the Volkswagen Polo, Audi A3 and SEAT Alhambra could be built at the same plant. -
