Honda Civic UK (1995 - 2000) - 1996 Concealed Rusting Brakepipes (& Rover 400) 17 Jun 2008 (Forum)
A word of warning for anyone with a 5-door Civic and I'm fairly sure this will also apply to the later model, 95 onwards Rover 400. I suffered a brake failure this morning due to a rusting brake pipe blowing. The car passed its MOT last year without them being mentioned. A post mortem at the garage revealed that where the rear brake pipes run under the car they are covered by a plastic casing which renders them all but invisible. -
Volkswagen Golf IV (1998 - 2004) - 03 1.9td Brake Fluid changes - £50! 14 Feb 2008 (Forum)
Can anyone tell me the frequency of which brake fluid should be changed? Is it two or three years? My car is booked in for a service, but got a call from the garage asking if I want brake fluid changed as they havent got a record of it being done in two years. -
Renault Clio II (1998 - 2001) - Brake fluid type / general fluid change discussion 6 Feb 2008 (Forum)
Any thoughts? I thought about doing the Mondeo brake fluid at the same time (DOT4 Ford spec ESD-M6C-57-A) though the dealer only charges £39.99 inc, its a no brainer, booked in for next week. Regards. -
Ford Focus brake pad wear indicator? 1 Feb 2007 (Forum)
Does anyone know whether a 4 year old Focus has a warning light (or possibly audible warning) for front pad wear? Reason for asking is that my Sister-in-Law's car failed it's MOT allegedly for worn front brake pads. The Ford dealer insisted that the pads would need replacing for the car to pass the MOT. The old pads were 'unfortunately' disposed of before the hefty bill was paid. There was no sign of braking problems or warnings before the MOT. -
Astra 1.7 TD '98 - Brake pedal creep 2 Nov 2006 (Forum)
Recently noticed when stopped in traffic, particularly facing downhill, my brake pedal slowly creeps down to the floor. I know its not really good practice to sit with footbrake on and not use handbrake, but who doesn't? Checked fluid levels several times in last 2 weeks and doesn't seem to be losing any and no sign of any obvious "damp" patches around wheel cylinders. -
Coolant and brake fluid questions? 4 Jun 2006 (Forum)
Planning at some point to change the coolant and brake fluid on the Mondeo, Clio and Kawasaki ZRX, a few questions: 1/ According to Haynes Ford original fit coolant is OK "for the life of the car", I have had it from new so I know it has not been changed for an inferior type or diluted, any thoughts? -
1999 Polo ABS Light 31 Oct 2005 (Forum)
(Not sure if this is relevant). Also, when the ABS light stayed on a bit longer after the brakes were first changed she commented there was a burning smell. No burning smell since and the brakes do work fine. I've heard that the random ABS light display is a known feature. Have you geniuses got any comments? -
Vectra brakes ABS compatibility 26 Jun 2005 (Forum)
Hello, does anyone know about Vectra brakes. I've got a problem with my P reg SRi failing the MOT due to excessive travel of the brake pedal. I've had a second-hand master cylinder fitted but the problem still remains. The mechanic has suggested that the replaced master cylinder is faulty but I have since spent some time on this site and others and it seems more likely that my problem lies with the ABS unit. -

"High level" rear brake lights 1 Dec 2004 (Forum)
Was pootling along behind a MX5 on the way to work, thinking what a nice little car it was except for the bump in the boot lid which contains the high level brake light but also spoils (IMHO) the line of the boot. It then dawned on me that the "high level" light was only about 2 inches higher than the ordinary brake lights and wouldn't be any more visible than them in a queue of traffic. -
Harley Davidson Dot4 brake fluid 8 Apr 2004 (Forum)
Got a long w/end ride coming up so today I flushed out the front and rear brakes on my ride with new Dot4 brake fluid (as per da manual), bled them and everything. She's almost 4 years old so about time I guessed. All is fine. My question is (or are!): is DOT4 hygroscopic like Dot3, can I store unused fluid without it degrading like Dot3 and does it attack paintwork like Dot3? -
ABS activating when not braking ! 20 Nov 2003 (Forum)
At low speed around 10 mph or less there is a whirring noise from under the bonnet followed by a ratcheting noise. The noise can appear when braking to a halt, when accelerating or when not touching the pedals at all. However if I'm touching the brake when the noise occurs I can feel the ABS system 'pulsing' when the ratcheting noise occurs. -
Grinding Brakes on Golf 17 Mar 2003 (Forum)
The rear brake discs on my 7 month old Golf have recently started to grind when applied. The car is going in to VW on Wednesday to be inspected. The grinding has got steadily worse over the last few weeks, which makes me think there is a fault rather than a stuck piece of grit or something. -
Bleeding Brakes 2 23 May 2001 (Forum)
Incidentally, to my shame, I was alerted to the problem when Madame (the wife) drove the car. She said "can you adjust the brake pedal, it's too long (!), it nearly goes into the carpet". Thinking about it, I had been unconciously pumping the pedal in normal use. This is a major safety feature of the Synergie, it's so b----y slow you never need much braking effort. -
