Grinding Brakes on Golf

Grinding Brakes on Golf - MatthewH
The rear brake discs on my 7 month old Golf have recently started to grind when applied. The car is going in to VW on Wednesday to be inspected. The grinding has got steadily worse over the last few weeks, which makes me think there is a fault rather than a stuck piece of grit or something. Braking power doesn't seem to be affected. I had a look through the wheel trims but the discs looked OK, no obvious scoring or marks.

A friend of mine knows the service manager at the local VW garage, and apparently this is a known issue with Golfs (along with pinking engines, coil packs, the list goes on). Just wondering if this is correct, and is there anything I need to know to avoid getting fobbed off, as a car on only 7000 miles shouldn't have got through a set of pads yet, especially on the rear.
