Jaguar improves XJ range 4 Dec 2008 (News)
Geoff Cousins, managing director of Jaguar in the UK, commented: "Within the large premium sector, the updated XJ range offers even more outstanding value-for-money for the luxury customer who seeks refinement and dynamic performance, combined with a competitive fuel economy." Prices for the Executive 2.7-litre diesel start at £44,599, while the Sovereign 2.7-litre diesel costs from £50,472. Vauxhall Corsa used in company car scheme 1 Dec 2008 (News)
A number of green vehicles were tested and the Corsa 1.3CDTi 16v (75PS) was chosen for its low emissions of 119 g/km, sustainability, fuel efficiency and good residual value. Vauxhall stated: "The result is a reduction in carbon emissions of 48.6 tonnes a year from the initial pilot involving 50 Corsas." Manufacturer launches software to promote greener driving 10 Oct 2008 (News)
Eco:drive is free to download from Fiat's website and the company says that drivers "can expect improve their driving efficiency [with] a 15 per cent reduction in CO2 emissions and in fuel costs". The launch of the software comes at the same time as the car-maker recorded its best monthly sales result in the UK since September 2004. Fiat now have a three per cent market share in the UK following 9,818 sales in September, of which the Fiat 500 accounted for over a third (3,624). -

Vauxhall unveils new ecoFLEX models 25 Sep 2008 (News)
It notes all of the new ecoFLEX models fall within the lowest diesel band for Benefit-in-Kind (BiK) tax, with an estimated combined fuel consumption of 62.8mpg. "These all new Astras tick both tax and cost efficiency boxes, from just £16,340 on the road," Vauxhall states. Corsa and Agila additions to the ecoFLEX range also fall into the lower 13 per cent diesel BiK tax band, qualifying for the government's second-lowest tax disc rate of £35 per annum. -

Vehicle excise duty rises criticised 2 Jun 2008 (News)
His comments came after prime minister Gordon Brown last week defended the government's plans with vehicle excise duty and fuel prices. Mr Brown claimed the changes were needed for "economic stability, the need to fund public services and the need to promote energy efficiency". However, Mr Ainsworth claimed that hiking vehicle excise duty was not the government should be doing.

Mr Bolkestein is reported to want an overhaul of the current taxation regimes for vehicles within the EU in order to overcome the current market fragmentation due to tax differentials, to establish EU-wide environmental elements to vehicle/fuel taxation, and to focus on ecological company car taxation. It is also reported that Mr Bolkestein intends to phase out VED, progressively increase diesel duty and harmonise duty of lead-free petrol.
