  • Legal experience sought 15 Sep 2005 (Forum)
The whole car moved with a shunt when I selected drive and there was a very loud clicking noise from the selector when pressing the foot brake. Without leaving the forecourt I informed the guy behind the counter and explained the problem and told him I was taking it up the road to test it. Drove a mile - it wouldn't change gear so returned and told him of the problem.

Then, despite the fact that I was moving at a speed at which I was making good progress (as I think the term is), you accelerated as hard as you could until you had to brake to prevent yourself hitting me. You were so close I couldn't see your front number plate. Then, you started flashing me. As my only route of escape would have been to sideswipe the car in the left lane (remember it is a two lane section), I hesitated in front of you for at least 30 seconds.

especially as they were renowned for having bodywork trouble and the engine looks OK although there are a few little niggles:- When started from cold (all electrical items off, in neutral, depress the clutch, pump the accelerator to the floor twice then turn the key without touching the accelerator) it fires after about three turns of the starter and it runs at a fast tickover on the auto choke and seems to tick over without any problem. If I then select Reverse and reverse a few yards as I apply the brakes and put my clutch in ready to do a hillstart in first and drive off the car stalls. I then just repeat the above (clutch in, turn the key without touching the accelerator) and it fires but then feels like its running on three cylinders so when I put my foot down slightly to increase the idle speed it starts spluttering and doesn?

The interior is begging to show signs of extreme wear. Tracking needs doing as I've kerbed one of the front wheels. Brakes, cam belt, coolant was done last year. Oil is changed 3 times a year. I have done 164k miles in it in just over six years and am doing about 16-20k miles per year at the moment. This year I'll probably do the same including a 3k mile round trip to France, 18 miles per day commute and numerous 200-600 mile trips to the coast and the mountains.
  • How to get a traffic hazard recognised 10 Oct 2003 (Forum)
Today, I was very lucky to have fairly good tyres as I was almost forced off the roundabout and had to brake hard in wet conditions by one of these impatient idiots, but it\'s not an uncommon occurance - there aren\'t many days go by when someone doesn\'t barge infront of me. I\'ve contacted the council about this before but they didn\'t reply.
  • Collating BR FAQ on TDi chip upgrades 11 Sep 2003 (Forum)
, but so far I've got: Gearbox & clutch Cylinders/head gasket turbocharger (including any possible difference variable vane turbo makes?) Cambelt? injectors? Suspension/shocks Brakes Wheels? Flat spots at lower revs? I'm also aware that different engines (eg TDi, PD, HDi etc) will all have different tolerances. Perhaps someone with more knowledge than me could give some guidance in terms of how likely/unlikely it is that chipping may lead to problems with any of the above.

Strangest servicing fact? At my first oil change at 27K miles, I asked the garage to look at the brake pads, which they estimated to be 6,000 miles from the knacker's yard. Still going strong. Even now, when I go out of my house in the morning with a long drive ahead, *every single time* I look forward to getting behind the wheel.

Overtaking on the inside is a standard procedure. We almost collected a stationwagon at one stage, and only frantic braking and swerving avoided the collision. Lovely. We are being driven about in a Nissan 4x4, whiuch is quite a useful vehcle for the roads here. Airco is essential, as the outside temp is pushing about 35-40, with humidity to match.
  • Peugeot 306 Electrics/lights problem! 10 Apr 2003 (Forum)
Then I had no headlights (or tail lights) for about a week. Everything else worked fine including brake lights, indicators, reverse lights etc, I just had no Side/Dip or main beam & rear lights. I took it to my local garage, who could not find the fault, so I was restricted to driving in daylight hours only.
  • End of Life Vehicles - Lost opportunity? 1 Jan 2003 (Forum)
However, when you look at the comparative prices of copper and aluminium compared to that of steel, and then think of all those wiring looms, replacement brake pipes, cylinder heads and other fittings that simply seem to get lost in the process, one does wonder. Don't forget those items that can be reconditioend. The going rate for a popular engine of gearbox fit for reconditioning is around £10 to £20.

At the next set of lights they swerved back into the RH lane as they wished to turn right, they were lucky the car behind them braked as I had done. I know this stuff happens all the time - but in the last week I seem to have had to do so much evasive action, much more than usual, and wondered if any others of you have experienced the same?
  • Weird, or what! 28 Aug 2002 (Forum)
If I increase speed I will hit the two in front. If I pull out I will hit the one on the side. If I brake the rear two will hit the back of my car. None of the bikers have looked directly at me. The situation is so bizarre that I decide that no eye contact is a darn good idea. As we progress I become a little uncertain as to what their game plan is other that to scare the living daylights out of me.

The car was used at numerous events like the 24 hours of Franchorchamps, the races at Zolder etc At the end of the forties, the car was technically outdated, the cable brakes did not stand up to the modern demands and it was decided to place the coupe on a more modern chassis. Unfortunately they did not find a chassis that was large enough to take the coachwork and they opted for a chassis of a Lincoln Zephyr V12 of 1937.

till the last minute; having passed the stationary queue in lanes 1 and 2 This leads to all three lanes being blocked or at best moving very slowly. Drivers approaching J3 brake, drivers behind over-compensate and a shock wave of stationary traffic is sent back down the M55 towards the 4 lane M6 {the country's major motorway in terms of vehicles per day - more use the M6 in Lancashire than any part of the M25 {London orbital}.

It came too soon for the (Nader inspired) collapsible steering column but it did have dual circuit brakes. The seat belts were just lapstraps and since their use was voluntary the front bench seat was handy at times and it was effectively a 6-seater. Unbelievably it came without a windscreen washer and I can remember driving behind lorries to pick up some spray.

Witness Elizabeth Harvey said: "As soon as the boy took his first step from the kerb I started swearing because I knew that he wouldn't be able to make it across." Beazer said he braked lightly and steered to avoid the youngster but could not avoid hitting him at about 20mph. At first Beazer, based at Bexhill, thought he had missed the boy until he looked in his rear-view mirror and saw him sprawled on the crossing.
  • Alfa 147 Selespeed 10 Aug 2001 (Forum)
I would argue that general cabin ambiance is easily won by the Alfa too, another contributory factor toward a \"good drive\" Under heavy braking over uneven or potholed roads AND whilst simultaneously cornering the 147 is simply incredible. If you need to stop in a hurry on a country lane there are very few cars I\'d rather be in. The Selespeed paddles in my view are not bad, they just take a little effort to master, which is why I believe many people dismiss them too quickly as being difficult.
  • Advice needed after accident :( 21 Dec 2005 (Forum)
We accelerated very slowly out of death hill but there's no where to safely over take and I wasn't in a rush so I just kept my distance. we went over the crest of the hill and down the other side, so i could only see the car infront of me and not the car infront of him (or her)... when the coupe infront of me suddenly swerved round the car infront of me, complete with screeching brakes and everything. I immediately slammed all on and also tried to move round but my car doesn't have ABS brakes, so you tend to brake in a straight line. I unfortunately skidded down the hill into the back of the car that was infront of the car infront of me.

Has used barely any oil, which is not due to be changed until 18k (despite my attempts to get them to change it anyway). Pedals are offset to the right like the Mercedes making left foot braking less comfortable and the windscreen wipers are left hand drive configeration which is annoying, as you get an unswept area in the top right hand corner of the screen. The radio is a pain to tune until you figure it out.

Tina Whitmore PS I've had this car for 9 months - here's what I've had fixed on mine so far: GECM replaced for front right headlight failure (fixed), replaced again for gauges (not fixed) Brake master cylinder replaced (not perfect but better - less fade) Pop-up vents (tape applied - temporary fix, I have now removed the vent to stop it from rattling - not fixed) All gauges died - replaced fuel sensor and pump (not fixed as they have died again since then) Hand brake too loose (fixed) Rear view mirror loose (replaced and fixed) Rear window glass defrost bars not working (window replaced - fixed) Rocking driver's seat (fixed) Cubby box clip broke (replaced box and fixed) Weeping washers (fixed) Two tyres replaced ("boxcar bearings" according to dealer - fixed) Drive shaft replaced (rattle sound coming from central console area - problem fixed) Rough suspension on certain bumps (fixed - mostly...)"
