Citroen C5 (2001 - 2008) - 2.0 16V Fuel Economy 18 Feb 2008 (Forum)
The lamba sensor prints from the MOT give a 1.009 i think so this looks okay. Car has not been properly serviced since 27/03/06 at 17,295 miles. I know garage fitted new rear brake pads before they sold it so they say. Oil looks fairly clean etc. Does it just need a good service. If so i may book into Voiture Technique Services in Warwick. A specialist Citroen small garage. -
Volkswagen Golf IV (1998 - 2004) - Main Dealers ARGGGHHHHH 16 Feb 2008 (Forum)
Got my Golf booked into main dealer for a service, which I was quoted £290 for, then yesterday I got a call from said dealer to ask me if i wanted the brake fluid changed as it hadn't been changed for two years at a cost of £50, as he caught me off guard I agreed. After thinking, I considered this to be expensive, so I phoned another main dealer who have quoted me £273 all in! -
Peugeot 406 (1996 - 1998) - 1996 to 1998 - Battery charge light 29 Nov 2007 (Forum)
My Pug 406, is a strange beast at the best of times, but yesterday the battery charge light came on whilst driving, albeit a bit dim and almost flickering, as I drove home i noticed my lights seemed to be getting dimmer and dimmer, the cd stopped working, then indicators gave up the ghost, the anti lock braking light came on, the steering started to get heavier and the air bag light came on as well. Finally on low revs the car was spluttering a bit, but JUST managed to get the thing home. 1st thought was battery, and as I haven't had a new battery for years I didn't mind replaing it. -
Renault Megane Coupe + Cabrio (1999 - 2003) - X reg 1.6 Dynamique - fix it or flog it? 8 Nov 2007 (Forum)
On the other hand, the paint has some minor damage (small chips in concentric circles about the size of a small apple- I think it might be damage from bird muck) Its just been in for its winter service and I've been told it needs some work doing. It needs three new tyres and new brake pads, which is being done tomorrow. In addition, he says I need a gear box mount replacing, the exhaust replacing and the front drive shaft fixing. None of these are urgent but will be need to replaced eventually. -
Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - 1.8 Zetec 2002, Petrol, Manual, Engine cut out 18 Oct 2007 (Forum)
Brief outline: Driving along, usually on slowing, ignition light is first to come on, then followed by engine light, then all the cluster lights come on and the power steering fails. I brake, stop the car, (fortunately have not been hit on each occasion!), restart and it fires up ok and carrys on as normal. (I have not noticed the speedo dying as I'm consentrating on stopping the car so not sure if this is a speed sensor prob, as this seems to be common). -
Vectra vs Signum 3 May 2007 (Forum)
Yesterday, I plucked up the courage to seek permission from the Household Financial Committee (ie SWMBO) to replace the family W reg petrol Vectra (105k miles, clutch possibly coming to end of life, brake disks thinning, MOT in September and a new cam belt at 120k) with a newer means of diesel transport. Much to my surprise, the request was granted in principle! Wohoo! So, here?s the issue. As a commuter knocking up 480 miles per week, we need a diesel car which will waft me in comfort and safety and will double up as the family car for weekends and holidays for the two of us, a nutty 4 year old boy and a more sedate 1 year old girl. -
Dealing with tailgaiters 13 Apr 2007 (Forum)
A pet hate of mine, what I do if I am being tailgaited badly is increase the stopping distance between me and the car in front to take account of the fact I can't brake hard if an emergency situation occurs. I do this by gradually and gently easing off the accelerator pedal until I have enough of a gap. Usually this doesn't make the situtation worse but sometimes you get the odd moron who obviously thinks I'm 'removing the urine' rather than ensuring both our continued existence if the worse should happen. -
bought off ebay- was the car good or bad 19 Mar 2007 (Forum)
The second was a hyundai coupe, same as before, i bought it blind. i had many emails with the seller and he seemed genuine ( they probably all are behind a keyboard). paid 1400for it. after driving it home i realised discs and pads needed changing all round, which i got done at a cost of £250. since i have had it i have had bits done incuding bushes,1 ball joint and a service, which i deem to be satisfatory on a 10 year old motor. i was pretty peeeeeeed of with having to change the brakes straight after i had bought it, but i take it as a lesson learned, and i still have the car now. its got leather, aircon and cruise control and i love driving it, so i dont moan. does anyone want to share there first hand buying experiences? -
Overtaking and speeding 5 Jan 2007 (Forum)
Several times, I floored it in 3rd at about 40, changed up at about 70 and pulled back into my lane and onto the brakes having probably hit about 80-85. Obviously my temporary maximum speed was well above the speed limit. I believe that I was only doing this when safe: the road was straight, the line of sight good, and the straight was long enough to be safely legal again long before running out of room. -
Driving through a flood 1 Dec 2006 (Forum)
I'm sure I've read something about not driving turbo diesels through water, but I am totally expecting to have dreamt it. Do you still have to test your brakes or is that a bit of an old fashioned notion these days? What am I damaging if I get water in my engine? At what point does the water become too deep to even contemplate driving through? This morning I think I would have had wet feet if I'd still been in Polo, and there were a number of older vehicles pulled up along my route. -
Stereotype bites the dust... 7 Nov 2006 (Forum)
t get within three hundred yards of that Metro. The lady used the road superbly, taking an economical line through the corners, braking early and accelerating out. By the time we joined the main road my ego had shrunk to the size of a peanut..I eventually convinced myself she must have been an ex. professional rally driver. Any similar confessions out there? -
Merc E320 CDI possible purchase 4 Oct 2006 (Forum)
Just seen this car, would I be mad? Its at the top of my budget but comes with a new mot - private sale - and the brake pipes mentioned in the car by car breakdown have just been done and its got the indicators in the mirrors which I think is the facelift. He wants £8300. I dont have any experience of big Mercs and any comments appreciated. 2000 MERCEDES-BENZ E CLASS E320 CDi Avantgarde 5dr Tip Auto Diesel Estate 140,000 miles, Green. -
Car transfer jitters - advice please 23 Aug 2006 (Forum)
It reached the princely sum of £60 but I gave an honest and frank descrption of the car including the above and that it did not possess an MOT and that is probably needed new brake discs (at least). I also advised that it would be best 'trailered away' as it needed a service. The car sold (unseen) to a woman who sent me a cheque some 2 weeks ago, which has now cleared. She has now contacted me to request to collect it tomorrow (23/8/06) with a friend from Liverpool and has intimated that she intends to drive it away untaxed/uninsured (perhaps),un-MOT'd and 'sorned'. -
Nissan Almera 1.4 knocking 18 Jul 2006 (Forum)
t feel any play in the wheel bearings. The knocking is audible at lower speeds when accelerating or under engine braking in the first two gears upto 2500 rpm. When over 2500 rpm the knocking starts to ?balance out? and becomes a rumble, in the higher gears there may be a rumble but road, wind and engine noise are more predominant. -
Garages and servicing schedules 14 Apr 2006 (Forum)
I ask this question because our C5 has just been for it's annual service and the garage concerned didn't change the brake fluid, which is required to be changed every two years, and this was last done, by them, in January 2004. Now, my wife would never have noticed this and I forgot about it until we got the car back. -
Reverse Crunching - Renault Scenic 15 Feb 2006 (Forum)
Not pressed it - but the guys think that by resting my foot on the clutch even the tiniest bit would have worn out some part of the clutch?? I thought that it was like the brake and needed to be depressed before it had any effect. If it is a problem with the teeth of the automatic clutch adjuster can this be fixed easily. Don't worry guys - your safe on the roads - I'm in OZ and am using this website because it looked very informative. -
Snow my goodness! 1 Dec 2005 (Forum)
There were a few patches of black ice so seeing several white vans going straight on with their front wheel flailing left and right was a sight to behold. I tried to test the ABS by getting up to a massive 20 mph and braking firmly and the car made a noise like something fell off into the road....which was slightly alarming. I just wish I'd brought my wellies as I would have been home in a fifth of the time.... I hope other Backroomers made it home in one piece with no extra dents :-) teabelly
