  • Sporty Coupe 21 Jan 2002 (Forum)
In a few weeks the Golf that she isn't really entitled to but is driving anyway is due to go back to the leasing company. It's kept the tyres from flat-spotting, the brake discs clean and the battery charged. I was hoping to reintroduce her to the diesel AX which I am driving, but even when I suggested upgrading it to a diesel Saxo or Xsara HDi or something that I would call "sensible and economical", she fixed me with a gimlet glare that I rightly interpreted as "no way on God's earth am I going to go back to the AX after using the Golf".
  • My day. 10 Jul 2001 (Forum)
If you have any concerns about trim quality on any current mainstream car just sit in one of these for two minutes without breaking somehing, that'll put things in perspective. Talking of breaking these cars have virtually no brakes. Even with new fluid, discs, pads and shoes effort is minimal on the rollers and a pass is barely recorded. On the road they are lethal, they just don't stop. The electrics, switchgear and ign sysyem must be sourced from recycled Christmas Cracker toys.....and the body from bacofoil.
  • Car for missus 8 Jul 2001 (Forum)
So, is it worth getting the 1.8i 'S' over the base model? It's got an LSD, but she's more interested in the ABS brakes. Apart from the headlights, is there any great reason to go for a newer one? What about the MGF -- are they cheap for a good reason? What else should we consider - I reckon on the Interga type-R, Nissan 200zx, New Mini (Cooper - suspect it will have better resale and gets more kit for not much more money), Ford Puma.
  • But you did not buy it here sir! 17 May 2001 (Forum)
No1 Chap takes his M-B V class bought 2nd hand brake button sticking causing the ratchet not to engage properly, hence possible runaway. M-B recommends replacement of lever. Local M-B dealer knows sod all about the recall, is shown the papers and when relative hears for the third time in as many minutes, "But you did not buy it here sir" he realises he is onto a loser and dealer has no intention of doing anything.
  • Seat Ibiza - Please help - rejecting a vehicle 4 Nov 2017 (Forum)
The same day I was at a junction which was quite a steep hill. I engaged the handbrake and took my foot of the brake. The car rolled back and nearly smashed into the car behind me. Also noticed a strong smell of petrol coming from the car when getting out of it, the vent on the dash board sounded like it had gas escaping from it when the heating or air con was on.
  • Golf 1.4TSI DSG CABRIO GT - Problems, problems 28 Aug 2016 (Forum)
I thought this was just me not being used to the DSG. after a few days I decided it was not me, and took it to the dealer, one of their engineers drove it and told me "thats just the way these are!" A few days after this on holiday a brake servo failure message came up, it seemed realy unlikely so I drove around an empty car park and tested the brakes, seemed ok so Idrove  to the local dealer who reselt the cars diagnostics, no further problem.
  • BMW Z4 Coupe - Help needed please, mis-sold BMW approved used car 6 May 2012 (Forum)
In the meantime I called the BMW £1 a minute line and was told that the only time it has visited was in September 2010 (at 12k) which is the brake fluid change. Spoke to the dealer again this afternoon who said still looking into it. I have email trail and well as record of phone conversations. He called me back at 5pm to say that it would appear that the oil service has never been done.
  • Frightening incident - tailgated down the M4 22 Feb 2010 (Forum)
As this happened, a purple X-Trail tore up my left flank and swerved in front of me, taking my safety margin and forcing me to dab the brakes, as he had to brake to slow down, thus avoiding rear-ending the car in front. Annoyed, I blasted the horn, and immediately after this the sound of a screaming airhorn came from behind me as an HGV struggled to avoid rear ending me.
  • Alfa Brera - I've finally driven one 1 May 2007 (Forum)
Putting the key module thingy into the slot, I pressed the Start Button. Nothing happened. A message on the info panel told me I need to press either the brake or clutch simultaneously to the button. I tried again and then the biggest disappointment of all. Instead of the famous Alfa sonorous howl of a highly tuned 6 or 4 cylinder, the rattle of a tractor engine.
  • Hyundai i10 - 2016 Hyundai i10 S Air 1.0 with Partial SH, Help! 4 Apr 2025 (Forum)
Was feeling anxious about the lack of service history so got my mechanic cousin to have a look and he believes it's a great wee car, but noticed thinning brake pads that the seller has agreed to replace. My cousin also said that if I am worried about the service history I can give it an engine flush after 5k miles for peace of mine? Despite all this I'm still very anxious about the gap in service history.
  • Peugeot 3008 - High pitched intermittent rotational sound - HELP! 7 Mar 2025 (Forum)
Hi - can anyone help please - I've had my car in the local garage twice for this and they can't find the cause of my high pitched intermittent rotational sound...(Peugeot 3008, 1.2 petrol, manual, 17 plate) My first guess was brakes - but they have 50% left... The annoying thing is when I start driving my car from cold - the noise isn't there - takes around 10 mins of driving to become apparent - so when garage took it for drive - they couldn't replicate the noise... but I've had the noise for a few weeks now...
  • Renault Clio S Edition 1.0 TCe CVT 2020 - Front Radar malfunction and other alarms 14 Dec 2024 (Forum)
The car was delivered back by the Dealership driver and later on driving the car again found that the Front Radar alarm was still activating affecting active braking and I believe the adaptive cruise control. Has anybody else had had the same issues as I and had there been any solutions to it. Will be grateful if someone can come with any information.
  • LV Britannia Rescue 14 Nov 2023 (Forum)
But this morning, I received a rather confusing letter from LV BR. The gist of it seems to be  saying if one has a flat tyre, flat battery or siezed brakes while the car is 'at home,' dont phone us, use a webform to contact us and tell us what's wrong. Bear in mind, this applies to anyone with home start which is included in the comprehensive cover. So now I wonder just how long will one have to wait for acknowledgement and assistance when requested via a webform that will go to a mailbox for call centre staff to trawl through between actual breakdown calls?
  • Mazda 2 - Remap? 4 May 2022 (Forum)
I'm guessing that they all have the same engine, which Mazda fit with different maps, and the remappers just have one map which is used regardless of whatever Mazda put in there originally. You'd hope that a 75ps remapped to 129bhp was fitted with the same brakes as a 115ps :) Anyway, I've got quotes for insurance from comparison sites, and they're surprisingly similar to what I'm paying now. However there would still be an issue when it came to selling it - restoring the original map isn't a problem, but the fact it had been remapped should be stated in any description and you'd guess would deter most potential buyers.
  • BMW X5 - Car Insurance - UK cover is a bargain! 2 May 2022 (Forum)
A son lives in Texas and owns an X5 that was in a shunt involving 5 cars - the driver who failed to brake was a youngish person driving a Ford truck - - he hit an Acura (posh Honda) , who hit a Ford Fusion (Mondeo) who hit my son's X5 and it was shunted into a new Camry. Police turn up and announce the truck driver was insured.
  • Kia Ceed - Technology and Driver Conveniences 31 Dec 2021 (Forum)
Another surprising thing for me was how easy it is to live with the start stop system, though it does seem to encourage the American style of driving of always keeping your foot on the brakes when stationary; I was taught to put the car in neutral if at a a standstill for any length of time to avoid dazzling the driver behind - but that’s showing my age!    It’s interesting that the manufacturers don’t necessarily follow the good ideas of other manufacturers.
  • Vauxhall Corsa - Bought a used car and had it delivered. 21 Nov 2021 (Forum)
Firstly the steering wheel must be held way way to the right to drive straight and even then I still have to adjust more to the right to keep it going in a straight line. Along with this It has bump steer in both directions but more to the left and also when I brake hard I can also feel it wanting to pull to the left ever so slightly. I know I was silly for buying without trying but did seem like a well maintained/looked after car on paper. I'm guessing the first thing I should be doing is getting it checked on a 4 wheel alignment however I dont have the cash spare at the moment and will need to wait a week to get paid but I'm concerned that waiting this long will cause me issues If i needed to take it back to the dealer as they might then try to pin it on me where as having it checked the next day after being delivered would be a lot harder to argue against the issue being present on delivery.
  • Any - Electric vehicles - how often would you change? 12 May 2020 (Forum)
With far fewer moving parts and presumably ongoing improvements in batteries, I should be able to get 20+ years out of a BEV with fewer repairs than a petrol/diesel car.  Brakes should last longer (unless the discs rust or callipers stick). Suspension wearing parts should be similar.  Trim and similar bits will be the same.  Tyres similar.  No EGR/DPF/DMF or moving parts in an ICE.
  • Time to update? 29 Aug 2019 (Forum)
Recently however it has started to show signs of wear with a boot lock that has now failed four times and most of the door rubbers are frayed plus there’s a few rattles and knocks meaning a few quid is overdue spending on the suspension. The rear brakes require stripping and cleaning every 6mths too. I’m also acutely aware of the potential DPF and EGR worries on these engines especially now that it’s doing mostly local running. It has been good value with an approximate part-ex value of £4K or nearer £4.5k if I can be bothered to sell it myself it has lost just over £3k in 3 years and averaged 55mpg.
  • Hit and run advice 24 Nov 2018 (Forum)
At traffic lights in a city she wasn’t familiar with. Other driver who had a child in front seat apppologised said her “brakes must have failed or something “. My wife attempted to get further details but was very shaken. The other driver said they needed to get to the side of road (middle lane of a three lane main road in rush hour).
