  • Car servicing 6 Jan 2022 (Forum)
I accept that if a vehicle fails it's MOT then further chargeable work is compulsory-but if advisories recommend near bald tyres being changed or urgently needed brake shoe replacement ( for me compulsory work-thus essential not advisory), then the actual quoted price of the service will double if not triple not to mention it being a bumper opportunity for a garage to treat the whole exercise as a major up selling up  "come on in"?

i had to buy another car as my renault was to expensive to repair ,so bought a Suzuki SX4 off gumtree from a local dealer ,i had to get a lift as i had no transport ,a neighbor who is a nurse gave me a lift but was short on time so i had no time to check the car out so bought it on spec yes i know never trust a dealer even though he advertized it as in good condition  It had a lot of paper work as was in what looked like great condition ,,driving home 4 miles the fan kept going on got home then did the checks to find no water in the engins at all put water in to find a leak from the back of the engine , im disabled and 73 to old to work on the car  Other faults were ABS did not work but no dash light come on front brakes down to 2/3mm Front tyres down to the wear blocks ,,bottom joint worn out + wheel bearing going out . Went online to the office fare trading in Poole /Bounemouth council only to find in their disclaimer that they cant stop a trader from trading & cant get your money back ,so left wondering what is the point  of an office flll of people that cant even stop a rouge trader or help the public !

  • Ford KA mk1 03-08 - Ford KA mk1 clutch change advice 13 Feb 2021 (Forum)
As I've never experienced this fault before I was wondering if from this photo : https://ibb.co/SJPhHdh Someone who has experience changing clutches can confirm that its the brake fluid that has leaked and dried from the slave cylinder (and it a common fault) or if its something else thats leaked and need changed? Also while I'm at the clutch I may aswell change it, would it be advisable to do the rear main seal, flywheel or anything else while im there?
  • 1.1 Citroen Saxo desire 03 - Advice needed on whether or not to purchase Saxo 30 Jan 2021 (Forum)
Now I've been in touch with the seller he has told me there are 3 problems with the car. 1. he has replaced the wiper motor as it wasn't working but says there must be another problem because the wipers will not run if there's any resistance. 2. he says that the rear left hand brake isn't engaging as well as it should. doesn't know why but says he can feel it. 3. there's a loose bolt connecting the drivers seat to the floor and he says it's possible the floor could be cracked but doesn't know.
  • BMW 3-Series E46 (1998 - 2005) - 2003, 2.0 318CI dying when idling 19 Jul 2020 (Forum)
If I identify this intermittent problem before it happens I can apply some revs and stop it happening. But this isn't a solution as I actually need my right foot to brake sometimes! The car had a similar problem last year which was eventually narrowed down to a Cam Sensor problem, I think this is totally different though. http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?
  • Toyota RAV4 xT3 2.2 d 4d. 2006. 120k - Transmission noise 20 May 2020 (Forum)
Hello, I bought this car with slight livable noise, it has developed, there is a noise about 6 x wheel rotation frequency, normal running and even when coasting downhill with engine off, depressiong clutch or light braking, noise is there, kind of scraping, gear/bearing type noise, evident from front of transmission tunel inside the car, changed the nearside wheel bearing, no difference, driveshafts seem to be ok, changed the oil in the gearboxes, all good and clean with no metal particles or chunks.
  • Peugeot autosleeper - Buying second hand campervan with 'fixed' rust 22 Jun 2019 (Forum)
We are looking to buy a camper van and have found one that fits all of our criteria, it is 17 years old, and on checking its MOT history it has had what sounds like some fairly major issues in the past. in 2017 the rear brake pipe was excessively corroded, in 2014 the structure had 'excessive corrosion seriously affecting its strength within 30cm of body mountings' at the front, offside, offside rear, offside front and nearside.
  • N/A - Road management 10 Jun 2019 (Forum)
On the approach to the tunnels gantries can display 4 or 5 speed limits within less than a mile before the tunnels and these are covered by Speed Cameras,  The result is the inevitable sharp braking to avoid a ticket and the knock on effect behind and miles yes miles of queues forming most of the day. Smart motorway it is not. Now it seems to me the best solution would be to increase the speed of flow not decrease to get though the bottle neck.
  • Peugeot 108 - Servicing worth paying a main dealer ? 9 Jan 2019 (Forum)
The issue is I believe I can service my cars to a higher standard because I have all the time in the world. I.e. once a year I strip the brakes completely and meticulously clean and de glaze etc before rebuilding with correct lubes etc at the same time as cleaning out the wheel arches and scrubbing both sides of each wheel. I cannot imagine anyone else going to this trouble.
  • MAZDA CX3 - SERVICE PLANS-PROS AND CONS 17 Jul 2018 (Forum)
In fact I have a sneeky feeling the deal might not even include the oil change( anyone know?), hence my obvious question--what's included/what's not? I'm pretty sure that stuff like brake shoes( if needed in year 3!) are not included, suggesting that anything with a flavour of wear and tear ain't either?  Mazda Dealer is very local and is probably best for Mazda knowledge, softwareupdates etc.
  • Citroen C3 2005 - ABS warning light and no OBD codes 19 May 2018 (Forum)
It also coincided with the start of the hotter weather this week so I figured it may be heat-related and was hoping it might go away again once the weather cooled down - it hasn't. I haven't done anything around the brakes or wheels recently so I don't think I've knocked a sensor or anything.. The last work done on the car was a new clutch a few weeks ago, but I didn't have this warning light appear until the last few days.
  • Audi TT Roadster - Clicking noise after SHE (video included) 6 May 2018 (Forum)
Since then, I have noticed a clicking noise, it seems to come when steering, pulling away and braking, (either straight or turning) until a certain speed, but I'm fairly sure at that point I just can't hear it anymore.  When the car is stationary, it makes no sound unless I turn the steering wheel.
  • Skoda Octavia - Dual Mass Flywheel 30 Apr 2017 (Forum)
So this is what I did..  My skoda (has 142k miles) and now requires a new cam belt, full service brakes & discs, totally around £1000. If I changed the dmf this will shoot the price up by around another £600.  My question is - how do I know if the dmf is on it's way out, and should I be changing it now.
  • FIAT Panda 1.2 Dynamic - Odd knocking noise with road speed 18 Mar 2017 (Forum)
The car only went for an MOT a couple of days ago, and I was convinced this might show up what the problem was, thinking it could have been a driveshaft, CV joint, suspension, brakes, or something like that, however it passed the MOT with no advisories. I can't see anything out of place, so am at a real loss as to why this noise should be happening. I have done a bit of research, but can't find anything that relates to this issue.
  • SEAT Ibiza SC - EPC light post service 8 Nov 2016 (Forum)
It is 6 years old but only done 30,000miles. 1.4 petrol engine. There were a few things recommended (brake pads, new tyres), nothing mentioned about battery/engine.  Took the car home that evening planning to get it back in this week for the above. I was given the car with the engine running and took it home (200m away), however on the two occasions I have attempted to start/drive my car since the service the EPC light has come on post starting up then the engine has died out (first time while still stationary, second time as soon as I pulled out onto the road).
  • n/a - School bus driver causes crash gets off with fine 26 Sep 2016 (Forum)
You can see that the lights were green for the car, having said that it was obvious that the bus was going too fast to stop but the car driver didn't take any action to avoid the collision- such as brake-swerve etc. Also - http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3805343/Shocking-footage-shows-moment-double-decker-bus-autistic-driver-20-schoolchildren-board-runs-red-light-smashes-woman-s-car.html I'm still a bit puzzled as to why he was allowed to continue driving - he did get the sack from the bus company thankfully.
  • Mercedes B class (245) 2006 1.5 Petrol - Could not connect to ECU, link failure 2 Jul 2016 (Forum)
I have 2 Mercedes. 1 A class 1.4 and a B class 1.5 2006 (recently bought). The problem is with the B class.  When bought the car there was SRS warning, brake light warning and display error warning. I have a maxidiag 802 which can read almost all the cars up to 2015. The A class previously had SRS warning which I did reset using the same machine. But this time I could not communicate with the ECU of the car and machine kepp saying link error.
  • FIAT Punto - Buying a 12 year old car 27 Jun 2016 (Forum)
The car is very clean inside (I reckon the back seats have never been sat on) and the engine is remarkably smooth.  Having all the fluids replaced, filters, plugs included and brakes given a thorough check over.  It appears to be rust free and everything works! Slight leak on the head breather pipe which will be replaced.  There is so much room under the bonnet!
  • Citroen Xsara Picasso to Honda, Mazda, SEAT ? - Advice on changing the Picasso to a reliable 13 Apr 2016 (Forum)
I have what has been up to now a very reliable Citroen Xsara Picasso - Deisel (milage 108890) - It now has a few issues, EGR valve (been cleaned once already), Clutch is high and going, NS Hbrake caliper need renewing as does back brakes, and the timing belt will be due at 150000. The MOT is due late summer and P/E (on checking with tool section is roughly £650) the estimate for all in is around £1500 and the debate mmm does one go with it or change vehicle?
