  • Xantia's progress 20 Apr 2005 (Forum)
The Xantia has just been serviced and it is the biggest service bill I have ever had for it, but it did include new front brake pads, the MOT Test, refilling with LHM and the replacement of a piece of corroded hydraulic suspension pipe. The total bill was £326 and I hate to think what it would have been at the main dealer.
  • Clever cars being dumb 3 Dec 2004 (Forum)
But taking into consideration the driver's nearly identical reports, which claimed that the cars on-board drive dynamic control systems had failed, BMW took on and inspected the case. The result was: Yes, after an emergency brake exceeding a certain preset pressure on the pedal, all stability systems are disabled and can only be re-enabled by switching off the ignition for five seconds... • Passat lights - not 6 Oct 2004 (Forum)
The car isn't fitted with front foglights, but only the driver's side rear foglight works. Full beam works ok on both sides, as do the brake lights and reversing lights. Recently I replaced the rear lightbulb (the one that should come on and stay on as soon as you switch on sidelights) and it did work for a short while, maybe three or four weeks.
  • Mondeo pig in a poke 14 Sep 2004 (Forum)
I have a 2 year old Company Mondeo Ghia X TDCi which has suffered a multitude of problems from new.Last month the rear brakes caught fire whilst my wife was driving my two boys to a party. The problem was sliders/caliper related and repaired under warranty.I wrote to Ford pointing out that for a car costing circa £21k the build quality was poor.Ford responded by offering to pay for the next service as a good will gesture. As a Company owned vehicle I get no benefit from this so I asked Ford if I could transfer the free service to my wife's Focus.
  • Insurance claim ? 11 Sep 2004 (Forum)
My daughter driving normally up A49 trunk road, just after dark. Car crosses from right to left immediately in front of her causing her to brake sharply/attempt to steer around to avoid collision. The car is attempting to enter a farm drive access splay, full of parked cars due to social function, and fails, stopping with boot stuck out into A49.
  • Semi-mothballed car 9 Sep 2004 (Forum)
I'm getting it serviced next week (the 70k service is tiny, just an oil change and level checks) and new brake pads and front tyres put on. Cam belt isn't due for another 10k or 1 year according to local Citroen dealership, so nothing to worry about there. How should I be driving it when I do take it out?
  • Sofa so good! 13 Aug 2004 (Forum)
Trying to imagine it I think it would be just about 1m tall and looking a bit silly. Fuel consumption would suffer and maybe rocking it (with acceleration and braking) on 2 bars at 700mm spacing might cause damage to the roof rails and fixings. Do I want 3 or even 4 bars on the roof? Anybody got any views? PS I was at Dover recently (in the ferry queue)and saw an estate car with roof rails where the owner had laid 3 suitcases on the roof, yes, on the roof itself and not on bars.
  • Decisions Decisions. Vectra for Vectra. 7 Jun 2004 (Forum)
Book price on mine is around £4500 (glass\'s guide, similar pricing with Parkers) I\'ll soon need 2 new rear tyres, and have a worn rear suspension bush (hence the visit to the garage to confirm, and the reason for needing some new tyres) costing around £230. Do I stick with my trusty X Reg workhorse that has, up until now only needed a brake light bulb, head light bulb, and an aircon pipe (which split and was replaced under warranty), or is it time to sell it before the onset of further problems? My insurance is also coming up shortly, and a quick look reveals the newer Vectra is approx £80 cheaper to insure.
  • Touareg and Cayenne recalled 27 May 2004 (Forum)
This marked the second time this year that the two models faced a joint recall. In February, the German carmakers checked whether a spring in the cars' hand brake had damaged wiring below, posing a fire danger. In the latest safety move, Porsche and VW will check whether pins that link belt buckles to their anchorages might separate when subjected to vibration.
  • Locking wheel nut racket 17 Dec 2003 (Forum)
Any ideas what they could be fouling on? My initial idea was that it could be the protective plate for the brake disc - maybe this was bent went the car was left on bricks? Thanks in advance, Chad. * McGard ref 27179 for Vx Omega.
  • Drivers or car operators - Discuss 19 Nov 2003 (Forum)
Take your 18year old boy racer out of his new clio or corsa and stick him in a MkII escort from the late 70's see how far he travels on that B road before he gets a close up of the hedges. I regularly see young guys braking through corners, or approaching corners too quickly knowing their ABS will 'safely' allow them to take off the excess speed on the way through. Or the same boy racer cornering with only one hand on the wheel.
  • Vibrating Omega 5 Jul 2003 (Forum)
I've read posts about other causes but the thing that puzzles me is why this was only noticeable when I had the new tyres put on - just coincidence? It's not worse under braking, the only other thing I can think of is driveshaft. The car's in for a service tomorrow at a Vauxhall dealer - is there anything I should get them to look at before they tell me the wheels need balancing?
  • Driving too close ? 19 Apr 2003 (Forum)
This lasted for about a half a mile - it's one of my major bugbears, very dangerous and un-necessary - tailgating whether conciously or unconsciously - and as a result I touched on my brakes to "get her off my tail". It worked, and she got the message and overtook off into the distance. Why people feel the need to follow so closely is beyond me, especially where there's another lane to use, and keep within the limit/reasonable speed.
  • Speed gun calibration 18 Apr 2003 (Forum)
The policeman jumped out from behind a tree like a salmon and zapped me. Now when I looked at my speedo it was reading 35mph or possibly just under so I braked and thought that there was no way he was going to pull me over for that speed. He did of course and informed me that I was actually travelling at 42mph! I informed him that my speedo was reading about 35mph but he said his speed gun was correct and my speedo was probably mis-reading.
  • MkIII Golf Noise 2 Aug 2002 (Forum)
This light noise is speed related not engine rpm, or gear related, and quite highly pitched even at 40 mph. It is not effected by braking or by weaving the car to alter the weight on wheel effect. Noises are always difficult to describe but initially I thought it was something rubbing on the disc, a small stone or trapped twig although a little more metalic than a twig.
  • VAG main dealer GOLF TDi service 16 Apr 2002 (Forum)
My wife's 1998 Golf TDi was serviced last week at the local VAG dealer. I posted a thread here when I discovered the brake fluid had been filled to the brim of the master cylinder. They fixed that by soaking up the excess with a rag. I took the car for its MOT yesterday. More bad news emerged. The tester checked the engine oil - it was over full.
  • steering wheel shakes 15 Apr 2002 (Forum)
(only fractionally, it moves maybe 1mm in each direction. (I have had it balanced but to no avail) The car responds normally under braking and has passsed 2 mot's since the accident. I have had it tracked at kwik fit a couple of times, but theproblem still remains. Should i get it tracked properly, i have read on this newsgroup about pit mounted tracking that do all the camber etc, if so where can you get this sort of tracking done?
  • Future collectible cars? 17 Mar 2002 (Forum)
All petrol cars made since 1993 have cats and ECUs. So do common rail diesels. 2. Most cars will have ABS brakes (ABS pumps and ECUs, again). 3. Most cars will have quite sophisticated immobilisers. 4. Over the last year or so we've seen the introduction of multiplex wiring. Add to this the prospect of most of out scrap yards being closed by EU legislation issues and it doesn't look too rosy for keeping a "nice old motor" going, does it?
  • Even traffic police must eat. 3 Aug 2001 (Forum)
Thought perhaps I was being a bit cheeky not slowing down to 65mph and avoiding him like most others. Then after a (non-contact) incident in front that caused us both to brake hard he slotted in behind and followed for the next dozen turns through town. As I neared my destination I was so sure he would pull into the car park behind me and have a chat my mind went through the check list....Tax, MOT, tyres, upstanding citizen (!)
