  • Vauxhall Astra Mk 4 (53 reg) - Alternative Jack Points on a Vauxhall Astra 21 Oct 2010 (Forum)
Hi, I  need to change the brake discs and pads on my car.  I all the equipment, however I am stupmed as to how I go about jacking up the car and placing the axle stands under the side jack points - surely if I jack up the car, I will be using one of the jack points and therefore not be able to place one of the axle stands as the jack pint where i am supposed to place the axle stand is being used by the trolley jack.
  • FORD MONDEO GHIA X 2001 - FORD MONDEO POWER STEERING LEAK 7 Oct 2010 (Forum)
I checked and smelt the spilt fluid and seems to be Power Steering fluid. I have checked the oil, water and brake fluid and they are all fine. But after checking the power steering fluid tank it was less than half full. So I would imagine it is the power steering fluid that is leaking. Since this happend I have also noticed I have been getting very low mpg, would a power steering leak cause this?
  • 1998 Ford Windstar - ABS light and trac warning light comes on 29 Sep 2010 (Forum)
When the vehicle is stopped and off and started again, the lights will not come on until I get up to about 15 mph at which point, the reluctor wheel begins to slip thus setting off the alarm. The brakes operate normally but if an icy  road should turn up and I need the ABS system to function properly, I will probably be in trouble.. I can't seem to find a new reluctor wheel as Ford evidently doesn't manufacture them any longer.

  • 2001 BMW318 Ci Regulating system fail for ABS, CBC, ASC+T/DSC 3 Sep 2010 (Forum)
Hi,  this morning when I started my car , 3 new warning lights came on:  brake warning light and the yellow lights for ABS & ASC+T/DSC The manual says this means that the complete regulating system for ABS, CBC, ASC+T/DSC and ADB haS failed. Is this going to be an expensive solution to fix the problem or is it something that I could possibly fix myself with the help of say a Haynes manual ?
  • Peugeot 306 (1993 - 2001) - What is this warning light? 15 Apr 2010 (Forum)
It comes on, intermittently, when the car is a less than approx 2000rpm, and comes on more often at low speeds than high speeds. I can make it go away by either revving the engine briefly or sometimes by braking quite sharply. All this would make me think that it's a coolant level indicator, either pressure or volume, except theres plenty of coolant in the car and its not losing any! Possibly a large air lock?
  • BMW X3 E83 SUV : 3.0 Sport: 2004/ 04 - Towing with an X3 - do I need to uprate the coolin 16 Mar 2010 (Forum)
Why does nobody else mention this? Am I being led up the garden path here? I would have expected the braked towing figure to be pull'able by the car as described in the manual without any changes. I dont know what to do. Can you help? Thanks, Rodw
  • Volkswagen Golf III (1992 - 1997) - 96 1.8 Sticky accelerator..? 5 Feb 2010 (Forum)
Basically, sometimes, quite often when I'm in third gear and am going down hill, I'll take my foot off the accelerator to use engine braking/not speed up, and although I've taken my foot off the accelerator pedal, the pedal will not move backwards with my foot - it will just stay stuck where it is. When i tap my foot back on the accelerator, the pedal will come back and I'll be able to use it as normal.
  • Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - 04 2.0 Can I fit 15" rims 13 Jan 2010 (Forum)
I spoke to Ford and they said they couldn't be sure if a 15" rim would fit on the Mondeo and I would have to 'just try it'. I don't want to get some to find they foul on the brakes. Does anybody know if 15" will fit and what other car I can get 15" rims from, i.e. will focus rims fit? He did say he thought the offset on the focus may be different. What spec (offset, etc.) wheel do I need.
  • Jack-knifing lorries 9 Jan 2010 (Forum)
My brother was heading down to Carlisle today in his car on M74 and at one point he felt his car glide across the carriageway without him touching steering, brakes or anything . When he looked in his mirror he saw 2 HGVs bearing down on him and that was his cue to get off at next slip road and turn back home! Its scary enough in a car knowing there is black ice underneath, I'd hate to think how it feels in an HGV when you see your trailer changing angle in your mirrors....
  • BMW 3-Series E46 (1998 - 2005) - BMW trade-in? 29 Oct 2009 (Forum)

  • Ford C-MAX (2003 - 2010) - Honest Indy 18 Oct 2009 (Forum)
A job I would normally do myself but, as I would need a piston wind back tool plus CMax adapter circa £30 - £35, I entrusted the job to my local trusted indy. That was on Monday. As the week progressed it became obvious the brakes were binding, so I dropped the car into them this morning for them to have a look. They suggested it may have been the handbrake causing problems and would take a look. Went back at lunchtime and they said sorry, we fitted the pads incorrectly (there are three spring clips on the back of the inner pad which lip around the piston, but they weren't).
  • Volvo 850 (1992 - 1996) - How important is ABS? 8 Jul 2009 (Forum)
I'm happy pottering around locally with no ABS, but I need to take my Father-in-Law down to Cornwall from Kent on saturday, a 500 mile round trip. Now, I was thinking no problem- the brakes still work; but I got to thinking, how important is the ABS? It is a big, heavy, powerful car, designed with ABS. Am I being a wimp, or are my concerns justified? Will it be okay in the dry, a problem in the wet?
  • who is right....me or dealer? 7 Jul 2009 (Forum)
Picked up new (to us) car on Moday, cost about £9000. ('03 estate) When I was negotiating I told the salesman I didn't want to be back in a couple of months needing new brake discs as I had been caught like that before. ''Wear and tear sir, down to you'' duely given new mot and all looks fine. Get home and look at the service sheet......rear discs badly corroded warning there.

  • Mazda MX5 (1998-2005) - Putting laid-up car back on the road 19 Jan 2009 (Forum)
It's been sitting on a relatives drive for the last five months, in the open, with its' hard top on. It's only had two oil changes in its' five years. She wouldn't let me change the oil or brake fluid before it was parked up. I disconnected the battery, pumped the tyres to around 45PSI and sprayed around with WD40 as a rodent deterrent as recommended here. I checked it around Christmas and put the battery on charge overnight.
  • Nissan Primera (1990 - 1996) - 1997 1.6 Abs Pump? Financial doom :( 4 Dec 2008 (Forum)
Hey guys, So I'm driving around like a happy chap in my cheap reliable primera, then when i put heavy pressure on the brakes to stop at around 10-15mph... the ABS kicks in when it does'nt need to, but not only that... it does'nt stop the car! And it then happened a few more times, ABS kicking in for no reason but not doing anything to stop the car... had to use the handbreak to prevent knocking a shiny BMW I dont have an ABS light on or anything, the garage says its most likely the ABS pump... which will cost upto £1300 to repair / replace.
  • Vauxhall Astra G Petrol (1998 - 2004) - 01 1.6 Auto, juddering and cutting out 17 Nov 2008 (Forum)
When we drive around town/short trips, the car is fine but, when we're on the dual carriageway, after about 10/20 mins. it starts to judder. If we have to slow down by braking, the car will cut out for no reason. We have one rubber belt that looks as though it drives the engine (auxillary belt with a tensioner pulley?). We've found that through the Haynes Manual, but we can't make proper sense of it!
  • Vauxhall Corsa B (1993 - 2000) - 1999 1.4 16v Put a deposit down - worried about HG 15 Oct 2008 (Forum)
Just taken a test drive on a V reg Corsa 1.4 16v CDX, it drove fine the brakes were a little spongy but the garage said he will fix this for the MOT. However when I checked for smoke there was a tiny bit of condensation steam (the engine was cold). I have just been back now and the car engine was running and there was quite a bit of steam coming out the back.
  • Honda Accord UK (1998 - 2003) - 00 2.0 Replacing spark plugs - any point? 29 Sep 2008 (Forum)
I'll give it to the dealer to do since if they've been in the head for 8 years then they can have the fun of getting them out. ;-) Brake pads will also need doing - anyone know if bog standard Honda pads are fine or whether it's worth speccing some different ones? Anything else you'd recommend besides oil? Cheers, Dave.
