The fall in fuel costs over the past 12 months has largely been attributed to a drop in global oil prices, which has been caused in part by a price war by the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (Opec). As a result there is a global surplus in petrol and diesel. It's unclear if other supermarkets will follow Sainsbury’s decision to cut fuel prices, but Avishai Moor, Sainsbury’s Head of Fuel, said: “This price drop, combined with one of our biggest ever points giveaways, provides our customers with excellent value.” -

The average cost of fuel decreased very slightly in July, following four consecutive months of rises. The 0.41 pence-per-litre (ppl) drop in the cost of petrol and 0.06ppl drop in the cost of diesel were brought about by lower wholesale costs, according to the latest RAC fuel watch report. In real terms the reduction will have made very little difference to drivers – but the in early August major supermarkets announced a more significant price cut of around 2ppl for both petrol and diesel. -

Simon Williams - RAC fuel spokesman - said: "The cost of a barrel of oil fell to $47.15 on Wednesday [7 June] – the lowest price since early May – contributing to a 2p-per-litre reduction in the wholesale price of petrol since 24 May. In the same time period the price of wholesale diesel has come down by more than 3.5p-per-litre." Although supermarkets often have cheaper fuel for sale due to competitive pricing amongst themselves, the average price of diesel is still around 4p-per-litre more expensive than it should be at UK retailers - like Shell and BP - because the wholesale price or diesel is now cheaper than petrol. -
Sainsbury’s to open a hydrogen fuel station 29 Oct 2014 (News)
With the supermarket fuel price war ongoing, Sainsbury’s has upped the ante by announcing it will be the first of them to sell hydrogen to motorists. Sainsburys will open a SmartFuel hydrogen forecourt at it Hendon store, London, before the end of 2014. -

Drivers are now spending £5 more on fuel than they were at the beginning of the year. September saw pump prices increase for the second consecutive month, pushing petrol and diesel to a 2016 high. Data from the RAC shows that an average litre of petrol is now 112p-per-litre, while diesel has crept up to 112p-per-litre. The report shows that supermarket prices both rose faster than average forecourt prices, with unleaded up 1.1p and diesel up 0.71p. -

Morrisons cuts 5P off a litre of fuel for Easter 24 Mar 2016 (News)
According to the AA's latest fuel price report, the national average price of unleaded petrol is 102p while diesel sits slightly lower at 101p-per-litre. The Easter price deal will lower the petrol and diesel prices to a respective 97p and 96p-per-litre. Asda has also vowed to keep fuel prices below £1-per-litre until 29 March.
