Pug 406 - Exactly how bad are they? 22 Nov 2004 (Forum)
. + Coolant loss leading to overheating (same problem, or does the latter relate more to hoses?) * Rear discs & parking brake trouble after 3 years: From my reading here in the backroom, this seems to be that the parking brake dies if you stop on it, and also seen that discs warp (specifically if you hold the car on the foot brake when it's hot?). -
VW Polo 2018 95 PS - Front bumper replacement 1 Apr 2024 (Forum)
I had seen some oil on my drive, so that was kosher. And a year back the VW garage said the rear brakes needed replacing, he took it in, didn’t change them, said they had more than 50% left. He just did the front brakes. The VW garage often claims work is needed when it isn’t. -

1999 Mercedes Benz c230k - HELP! My car revs up to 5000+ upon start up 25 Aug 2018 (Forum)
My 1999 c230k was fine just yesterday and then this morning when I started it the rpm just kept revving up past 6000 in park. so I shut it off and tried again then it did it again so I let it go and it stopped and went back down but only to 1500. When I put it in drive I can feel it trying to rev its self a little if I let go of the brakes the car will slowly start accelerating on its own. The car also doesn’t respond to the gas pedal well I can push it down and it won’t really do anything just keep jerking and I have to push the brakes extremely hard to stop the car! -
N/A - Tesla autopilot 28 Apr 2018 (Forum)
Unproven tech in motor vehicles is going to cost innocent victims their lives. We have radar cruise control, automatic braking and other so called safety sytems which give the drivers a false sense of security. The latest I observe is brake lights coming on for no apparent reason when following on the motorway due to these systems. -
Honda Civic 1.8 March 2013 - Honda civic rear calipers sticking 27 Oct 2017 (Forum)
I bought Honda on the reputation of reliability, I am not too impressed at the moment. I have done approx 61,000 miles over 4 years; do not brake excessively and quite a careful driver.on the whole. I have just been quoted £435 for rear calipers and £120 for rear brake pads. Can i fight this as a known defect and reduce the bill? -

Following up the letter published in the may 31 edition I recently had a safety report on my Grand Scenic 1.9 dci first registered september 2004 with... -

Kia Sportage XS 1996 (50,000 miles) - Very bad vibration 29 Jan 2014 (Forum)
The gear change was still a bit stiff, but loosened up on the journey home, and seemed to be OK. I drove home well within the speed limits. Cruising towards (decelerating, no brakes) the Amesbury roundabout on the A303 a terrible vibration started from the rear of the car. Not sure if it was wheels or drive train. I immediately slipped the clutch, put the car in neutral and cruised to a halt with minimal brake pressure. -
fiesta mk4 diesel - Front end rattle 17 Jul 2013 (Forum)
Well I really thought I'd found the source of the rattling but it's still happening. All the plastic air inlet stuff is nicely secured now so i can forget that. Nor is it brake pads as the noise still continues when braking. The rattling starts up after I've done about twenty miles on the nearside. If was anything to do with the suspension surely the rattling would happen straight away not wait twenty miles and then start. -
Toyota Avensis (2003 - 2008) - Dishonest seller 9 Feb 2010 (Forum)
I recently bought a Toyota Avensis from Toyota dealer, 2 hours drive from home a 58 registration. Within 10 days, I realised some noise on braking, though it has done only 8200 miles on the clock (I did 500 miles). Took to local toyota dealer who changed both rear brake discs saying very damaged (though changed under warranty). I should say, the dealer and sales person were very arrogant and rude, but as we liked the car and we wanted Automatic... we bought it. -
Audi drivers one inch from your rear bumper 25 Aug 2009 (Forum)
Just driven 300 miles and constantly had one audi after another driving one inch behind me, and no I was not driving too slow, mostly I had a long line of cars in front of myself plus some sensible braking distance, whether I was doing 5 mph or aherm 100 mph there they were an inch behind I let countless of them past since they were being so aggresive, but gave up in the end Really when I get a terminal illness and nothing really matters anymore I'm going to slam the brakes on for one of these people and shoot the pants off him How did the take all the Hobs out of Hobnobs and leave the other stuff as audi drivers The BMW's/Mercs/Volvos are still as bad as usual but what are they doing to Audis to turn anyone who drives one into an instant idiot? -
Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - 2001 1.8 TDCI stalling and locking up 1 Apr 2009 (Forum)
Just got my car back from another hefty service and MOT (new front brake pads etc), and also had the Instrument Panel replaced as it was one of the faulty ones that are replaced for £99 under the 'watchdog' scheme. When driving home, I was doing about 30 miles an hour and went to change gear and the car stalled and also stopped VERY suddenly (even though this model has no ABS). -
Friend has had a nasty crash - need some advice 21 Feb 2009 (Forum)
My friend has just had a crash she lost control in a national speed limit zone and rolled the car. The tyres and brakes were brand new (fitted last week) could this be a connection? She went against my advice and put the new tyres on the front. She is ok just suffering from delayed shock, the car has a cracked windscreen not sure what else, the airbags did not deply. -
Peugeot - 1990 2.5DT J5 vacuum pump question 9 Jun 2008 (Forum)
It went in for a cambelt change last week (thought I would let someone with a 4 post ramp do that one!) and they reported that the brake servo was defective. Now I?ve done the pump test on the brake pedal and it does move down a few inches on startup (so to me it?s not a servo issue). However when the engine is running and I put my finger over the pipe coming from the vacuum pump it has very little ? -
Hyundai Getz (2002 - 2008) - complete & utter incompetence 20 Oct 2007 (Forum)

Rover 827 pulling to the left 21 Apr 2006 (Forum)
I had the brakes checked by a garage and the pads are brand new and the discs are old but in good condition. Any ideas? I was wondering whether it might be an air bubble in the system so that the right hand calliper is not going down or it might be sticking. -
Pug306HDi - ABS warning light 12 Sep 2005 (Forum)
My ABS warning light is coming on, it does the ignition check for a few secs and goes out ok, but will then come on when I drive, some times as soon as I start rolling but others it takes up to 5 miles. Also braking hard (ie stabbing them at 30) will make it come on as the brakes are released. Onces its on it wont go off until you switch off and restart. My question is could a difference in wear of the front tyres (one is brand new the other is nearly at the end of its life so there is probably ~5mm difference (195/55/15)) be enough to throw the sensors as the wheels will be rotating at slightly different speeds? -
Ford mechanical ABS (Mk4 Escort) 1 Dec 2004 (Forum)
Being as there's been a fair turnover of BR members since then I thought I'd put it up again and ask if anyone has had any success with freeing up this kind of system? Quick recap, the "Anti-Lock" bit works fine, it just doesn't want to apply the brakes again (well, for a while [an hour] at least!). All curtosy of my gran who owned the car for 13 years and never ever used the ABS or (by the look of it) never had the brake fluid changed! I'm tempted to buy some second-hand modulators off e-bay and maybe try them out if push comes to shove, or to take apart and have a look inside! -
Truck Driving 1 Dec 2004 (Forum)
I think that the car test should have a Lgv realisation module added to the test, so that some car drivers will have half a clue as to positioning on a roundabout when approaching a artic. As you said in your rant about accelaration, what about braking ?, you can see it now, Blondie with the two kids on the way to school in a 4x4 not out of place in the middle of the Rockies, "Oh that big beastly lorry thing, it has lots of wheels so it must have lots brakes, so can stop faster, i,ll just nip in front of him", this view is apparant everyday.
