cv joint/boot - mk2 Golf. 30 Dec 2003 (Forum)
Mk2 golf 1.3 1990 During the past month i\'ve noticed a occasional slight grinding sound from my passenger side front wheel when I brake. This has got more frequent and now occurs each time I brake. I jacked the car up to inspect the pads they were fine. But I discovered that the the cv boot must have a split in it because the grease is leaking out all the way around the rubber boot. -
Why is it... 2 Oct 2003 (Forum)
The tyres they used were of the crossply flavour and had the cornering ability of a penguin on wizz. We now have things like ABS / AWD / AWS / ESP / crumple zones / air bags / vented disc brakes / servo assisted brakes / asymmetric super grippy radial tyres / 3 point seat belts and an mot test that is about 100 times more exacting than it was 30 years ago, even the cyclists now wear helmets in case we hit them. -
Audi A4 - Identical Fault code 65535 on ABS & Airbag Audi A4 9 Jun 2015 (Forum)
On longer car journeys with repeated braking the rear brake light bulb would actually blow and need replacing. I changed the mobile phone charger several times but I still got the same issue as mentioned above. In the end I just stopped charging my mobile phone via the cigarette lighter socket. -
Mazda 6 Tourer - Mazda 6 - Brakes Issues 6 Feb 2018 (Forum)
It has the remaining 2 years of the warranty or up to 60k miles. Shortly after buying I noticed a vibration and the brakes juddering. So at the next service I took it to Mazda Doncaster close to where I work. They ended up skimming the discs under warranty. Well before the next service, it started to judder again when braking. -
Ford Fiesta (1995 - 1999) - My Fiesta - now more confused. 4 Jan 2009 (Forum)
If I took my car to a different garage (finding one will be hard, most of them have been sacked by us) would they charge me a fortune to diagnose the brake and suspension issues? Sorry for my long post, I am just confused as since my driving is improving my car is a lot smoother . It just seems if I git rid of it, it may just be because of wear items, suspension and brakes and I would have to get this work done on many cars no doubt. -
ANY - Helping Conscientious Drivers Avoid Speeding Fines 31 Jan 2020 (Forum)
However we are still left with it being down to the discretion of Chief Police Officers as to just what the limits are in any given county with several authorities refusing to disclose what limits they are applying! Most modern cars have the ability to fully apply the brakes in an emergency to help avoid collisions, to offer hill start assistance to prevent roll back on hill starts and to selectively apply braking to individual wheels as part of a vehicle stability control or anti-skid mechanism. -
Jaguar XF - Shuddering steering wheel when braking 13 Feb 2018 (Forum)
I asked my mechanic again and now he says so long as it is through the steering wheel ansd not the brake pedal or through my seat, the only possible reason could be is binding brake callipers which are over heating causing the discs to warp- so now I need new callipers AND new set of discs and pads!!! -
Mercedes-Benz C-Class W203 - Service quote... 3 Aug 2011 (Forum)
I think that the brake fluid was changed at the last service so shouldn't need to be done, can you please tell me how much off the bill for no brake fluid required? Sure.. it's £39.72p - is that including labour or is it just the fluid? -
Any - Brake Grease Choice 6 Jan 2020 (Forum)
Since I don’t have time to resolve the suspected bearing failure (which may not be possible anyway) before leaving for the witer vacation, I’m stripping cleaning and re-installing the brakes. Most of the heat is coming from here, though they may not be the underlying cause. Passenger side doesn’t look too bad. There some black varnish-like stuff on the piston that I’d guess is derived from worn seals, but not much rust. -
SUZUKI IGNIS 2003 - 3RD TIME CHANGING BRAKE DISCS WITHIN A YEAR 6 Oct 2013 (Forum)
So, i got a new set of discs fitted (blueprint) free of charge and bought new pads. today, 3 months later, i get the same symptoms while braking (steering wheel shaking), i just went to the same garage, and the mechanic is now accusing the poor quality of the discs & pads fitted, strongly suggesting me to get genuine suzuki parts fitted instead. -
Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - 01 2.0 Noise from rear brake(s) 23 Jun 2008 (Forum)
Seemed fine driving home Friday evening but having taken it out since for a decent run I have noticed an odd sound coming from the O/S rear brakes. I'm fairly certain they're disc brakes on these though haven't checked to be honest! The sound couldn't quite be described as a grinding but it's definitely a friction-like sound. Imagine clawing your nails lightly across a formica surface...! -
Nissan Almera (2000 - 2006) - 2004 1.8S Auto erratic mpg after service! 16 Mar 2008 (Forum)
Since the spark plug problem we've used 7 tanks of fuel (doing 2,500ish miles) & got the following mpg figures: First tank after the spark plug problem = 30mpg Second tank = 30mpg Third tank = 38mpg Fourth tank = 30mpg Fifth tank = 35mpg Sixth tank = 32mpg Seventh (& last) tank = 32mpg It's running perfectly, no problems at all, there aren't any warning lights on the dashboard, the brake pads were replaced on the service & the brake callipers were fine (plus it's accelerating and braking OK) so it's not the brakes binding & there doesn't seem to be any black smoke coming out of the exhaust. -
Catastrophic Brake failure 6 Mar 2003 (Forum)
I think that to some extent the garage acted in good faith ie if they had thought there was a serious problem with the brakes they would have done something more about it but I do not see why I should suffer from the whole sorry affair and am wondering whether to resort to more formal legal redress or whether there is a commercial discussion to be had with the garage as I would consider buying a vehicle off them again. -
Nissan Qashqai - Qashqai Noise 9 Mar 2024 (Forum)
When 'cold' it doesn't make this noise at all. The noise stops if you rest your foot lightly on the brake pedal. My initial feeling was wheel bearing or front discs (Front Brake discs worn, pitted or scored, but not seriously weakened - MOT) but a trusted local mechanic has checked both and doesn't think this is the case. -

Audi A4 - Rear end crash 3 Jan 2015 (Forum)
The two cars in front were clearly driving without due care and attention. I would have had plenty of time to stop for the junction if they had braked correctly and indicated their intentions. I have witnesses in my favour. How do I stand? Edit: My bad. They braked sharply not breaked. -
Ford Mondeo, diesel 2ltr, 2011 - vibration / shuddering when applying the brakes 2 Jul 2013 (Forum)
Hi, any advice appreciated, I bought the Mondeo in march this year with 40k on the clock, still has a year of manufacturers warranty left, in june the clutch went (10 days after the 60 day dealer warrant ran out) only sign was the revs climbing at 2500rpm for a second then back to normal, this happened a coupe of times then the cluch went, took it to a ford garage and they said the clutch was burnt out and recommended that I change the slave and the DMF, £1400. ouch and not warrantable, now a couple of weeks later there is a strong shudder / vibration coming up through the steering wheel when the brakes are applied, the dealer I bought it from and the ford garage that fixed the clutch both say that is warped discs,(poss £450.00 to fix) Ford warranty say they are not warrantable parts, if anyone knows what the problem could be and where I stand on warranted parts, and what come back I may have against the dealer I bought it from (A Clark in Edinburgh), I feel anoyed that im spending alot of money on a car I have only had for 4 months, and when I get someone on the phone they are quick to pass me to someone else or fob me off. -
renault megane - Renault Megane - Broken again 14 Nov 2011 (Forum)
Today my engine light came on (due to the camshaft sensor) and also my ABS light which I'm hoping is just low brake fluid as I really can't afford to fix the brakes again. Am I just super unlucky or is the Megane possibly the worst car ever made? Do any other owners have similar issues or others I haven't encountered yet so I can look forward to my next breakdown? -
Renault Clio II (1998 - 2001) - 1998 1.4 Strange grinding/noise on engine braking 27 Jan 2009 (Forum)
when I took my foot off the accelerator at 70+ mph (I'm thinking its when the engine was naturally braking). The noise stopped when I put my foot back on the accelerator or when I put my foot on the break. The vibration didn't affect the steering and none of the lights in the car came on, it just made the strange noise. -
Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - 2005 2.0 tdci - Front Brake Discs 14 Dec 2008 (Forum)
After its last service I was told that the pads on the back only had a couple of thousand miles left in them while the ones on the front were better for a bit more. I left it a bit longer than I should and then got the brakes done - in doing this they said that they would have to replace my rear discs due to damage by the over worn pads. I have just had a call from the garage doing the service and they have told me that the front discs are on a poor state and need replacing.
