I require a B service... (for a Mercedes C class C230, 56 plate)

-Called on Monday (3 days ago), was told that because they couldn't get through to anyone, they would take down my details and call me back.

-Called them again today because no call back materialised. Again, I go through the whole rigamorale of what is required, a 'B' service and also the possibility of a thermostat being changed. A quote and breakdown of costs please. Apparently, they have to go to yet another department to get this all priced up. Will get another call back

-Several hours later, a call back, "Here is a quote for an 'A' service and the price for changing an alternator..." Was not impressed - apparently this is yet another department giving me a call back and the original details weren't passed on to them.... will need another call back...

-30 mins later, I got a voicemail message - missed the call - my fault. However, I called straight back and got through to reception where they attempted to pass me through to the correct department to get the quote. Tried twice and no one in that department is there. Again, asked for details so that they can call me back in the near future. Great.

-30 mins later, I get the call back from the original person handling my quote with the correct details! It's only taken 6 hours...

Here's what i was told:

  • Replacement of gearbox fluid
  • Air filter
  • Brake fluid
  • Spark plugs

'B' service, labour and parts, etc. total is £1407.08p (delivered with no hint of sarcasm, wit or embarrassment). Apparently they have a 50% off labour promotional event and the adjusted total is £1011.08p

Hang on, I say... I think that the brake fluid was changed at the last service so shouldn't need to be done, can you please tell me how much off the bill for no brake fluid required? Sure.. it's £39.72p - is that including labour or is it just the fluid? "It's both, sir..."

The thermostat change, parts and labour will be £292.80p

I have to actually commend them for the rather cheap brake fluid change - even an independent quoted me £50 for brake fluid change.. so something's obviously not right here but I didn't stay on the line too much longer.... (and now I remember that I didn't actually ask if the prices include VAT...)

I know I shouldn't be too surprised with dealership 'experiences' but still...

I trust you'll be giving the mercedes dealership a wide berth when you drive your car somewhere to get it serviced.

If the brake fluid is only £40, then the gearbox fluid could be about £80, so it must be either the air filter which could be a hand knitted one, or your car must need about 200 spark plugs to get close to £1000 for a service.

On a 56 plate the OEM warranty must have long since expired. You'd need a lot of 'goodwill' from mb to warrant that cost!

I don't use the dealer for mine now unless desperate. I have found a good indie who turned a £600 dealer quote into a £100 bill. I have to say swmbo's Volvo has cost more reccently to keep on the road than my CLK. If you use main dealers for most makes it can get expensive....VW were brilliant at giving out wallet busting bills. Should run a competition for the bill of the month and see which car really costs megabucks to fix.
