Ford Mondeo, diesel 2ltr, 2011 - vibration / shuddering when applying the brakes - gsworks

Hi, any advice appreciated, I bought the Mondeo in march this year with 40k on the clock, still has a year of manufacturers warranty left, in june the clutch went (10 days after the 60 day dealer warrant ran out) only sign was the revs climbing at 2500rpm for a second then back to normal, this happened a coupe of times then the cluch went, took it to a ford garage and they said the clutch was burnt out and recommended that I change the slave and the DMF, £1400. ouch and not warrantable, now a couple of weeks later there is a strong shudder / vibration coming up through the steering wheel when the brakes are applied, the dealer I bought it from and the ford garage that fixed the clutch both say that is warped discs,(poss £450.00 to fix) Ford warranty say they are not warrantable parts, if anyone knows what the problem could be and where I stand on warranted parts, and what come back I may have against the dealer I bought it from (A Clark in Edinburgh), I feel anoyed that im spending alot of money on a car I have only had for 4 months, and when I get someone on the phone they are quick to pass me to someone else or fob me off.

Many thanks, G.

SOGA - dealer reponsible for warranty for 6 months

You need Trading Standards advice - A Clark cannot walk away from SOGA - problems must be deemed to be their job to fix in 6 months - not 60 days

Clark are playing you for a ignorant mug punter. As a national chain they know better.

both say that is warped discs

Warped discs (as in excessive runout) are seldom the cause of brake judder. Uneven transfer of brake pad material onto the disc can cause these symptoms. If the discs are thoroughly cleaned and the pads aren't glazed, then the symptoms acan sometimes be cheaply solved. It has to be said that it takes quite a staccato braking style to cause this...

Is it still the case that keeping the brakes applied firmly after a heavy braking session can transfer material too?

It used to be the case that when glaze busting by repeated heavy braking that the good driver would release the brakes without coming to rest and continue driving to cool things down.

You want pad material on the disc-but evenly distributed!

Warped discs 99% of the time result in brake shudder .

Warped discs 99% of the time result in brake shudder .

Put a dial gauge on a 'warped' disc and turn the disc to see if it really is warped. Normally they aren't.

Come to think of it, the failed clutch could be linked to the brake judder. Brakes can apply far more torque to the drive shaft than the engine can and the clutch transmits torque both ways...

This little gem may or may not have any bearing on the OP's problem but here goes anyway.

I vaugely remember that a problem existed with oem Ford discs where when they were manufactured the casting was machined so that part of the chilled cast skin was not machined away. This resulted in a disc where part of the disc was harder, due to the chilled section, than the rest of it. This meant that the soft parts wore away quicker than the hard parts, causing a similar braking problem to that described. Is it possible that this fault is rearing it's head again?

I also recall that a service fix for this was what was termed "abrasive pads" which scoured the hard patches off the discs.

In my kerbside cowboy days my local factor was a Ferodo stockist and i always where possible fitted them, always a first class product.

I remember them having a really rough sandpaper style finish to the pad which cleaned up the disc a treat during initial bedding in, every vehicle i fitted these to the brakes were significantly improved.

Very difficult to find them now as a standard replacement, they seem to be specialising in performance materials...unless someone can point me in the right direction to find another stockist.
