rear end shunts 28 Sep 2004 (Forum)
I know that in a rear end shunt, the shunter, not shuntee, is usually at fault (should keep distance, anticipate braking etc.). But the other day I was following a car down a steep hill in heavy traffic and not once did its brake lights come on. Neither did they come on at the next set of traffic lights we both came to, also on a hill. -
Honda Civic 2018 - Rolling Car 12 Jan 2020 (Forum)
The car was probably only active for a couple of seconds. I am as certain as I can be that I put the parking brake on - I've had electronic parking brakes on previous cars and you do it instinctively. I do know that on exiting the car, I looked at it from beside the front wing to check the new parking position, and that I noticed that the wheels were dirty (which surely implies the car wasn't rolling away at that point). -
Any - Removing Window Tint Film 12 Mar 2020 (Forum)
After an hour or two I abandoned the solar energy program and started peeling with the hair dryer, working brake fluid in behind the lifted edge with a brush. The film peeled fairly easily but I wasn’t convinced the brake fluid was doing anything, so stopped using it about a quarter of the way down. This was probably a mistake, since there was a lot more glue left behind on the lower part of the hatch. -
Old SYM Wolf 125 (drum brakes) - Motorcycle Fork Strip 20 Nov 2023 (Forum)

They are off an old SYM Wolf 125 (drum brakes and chain case stylee). shockends1920×2560 182 KB The two forks are different designs (one had a plug thing on the narrow end which I assume restricts the oil flow, the other more oil flow ports) so at least one isn’t original, unless SYM production control is very informal. -
Mazda 2 sport nav - Brake pads 20 Feb 2018 (Forum)
An advice to others , so far our leased ( with maintenance) Mazda 2 sport has had to have brake pads(front) replaced at 7,000 miles and at 14,000 miles. When I queried with garage who have had to contact leasing company for approval ( agreed both times) that this cant be right or indeed normal , blank faces as though I am wrong to make this statement. -
'Binary' driving : a generational thing ? 12 Jul 2016 (Forum)
In the last few weeks, I've been a passenger with several drivers - male and female - in their 20s and 30s. Without exception, they drive either on the accelerator, or on the brake. There's been no gradual slowing, or easing off on the approach to a bend. It's on the accelerator, then on the brake as they get close, then straight onto the accelerator out of the bend - even if another slow bend is 50 yards ahead, and they'll be braking in 2 or 3 seconds again. -
Vauxhall Zafira A (1999 - 2005) - 99 1.8 Rear Brake Squeal 8 Mar 2015 (Forum)
I have a 2.5 yr old 1.8 Elegance with 18000 mls on. At the start of the summer I noticed a slight squeal on the rear brakes which disapeared after pulling away. My conclusion was a sticky caliper. The symptoms got worse. So much so that at the height of summer with 27 degrees of heat the squeal refused to go away and got worse. -
Peugeot 406 Diesel W reg - Electrical fault - Air conditioning 1 Jul 2014 (Forum)
Any ideas as to what is causing this and how to recify it. I also have a fault with the hand brake in warm weather which has been going on since last year. When the hand brake is pulled up the display flashes 'brake fluid level low' even 'tho I know it is fine. Are these electrical anomolies just something I have to live with given the age of the car and should I expect the vehicle to develop more. -
Volkswagen Passat - How Can I tell they changed the brake fluid? 8 Oct 2011 (Forum)
They carried out the three year service as part of the purchase contract. When I studied the service schedule the brake fluid change was ticked not changed! This should have been changed! I contacted the dealer and they said that they had not changed it because it had been changed at a pervious service, a quick check of the service schedule proved this not to be true. -
Citroen Xsara Picasso (2000 - 2010) - 01 2.0 Fire Problem 21 Dec 2010 (Forum)
I am nervous about starting the engine or moving the car in case it is the Servo and it ignites again or the brakes fail. Has anyone encountered anything like this previously. Thanks in advance. -
Ford Escort 1.6 16V 1998 - Whirring noise on acceleration 21 Feb 2010 (Forum)
It is silent on idle but starts once you reach about 10 mile ph and gets louder the faster you go. On braking the back brakes sound like they are grating (Brake shoes replaced approx 9 mths ago) about 2 months after they were fitted they were grating so they were taken off and found there to be quite a lot of dust gathered so cleaned and replaced. -
Garage fraud advice 21 Jan 2010 (Forum)
I had recently had them done so I questioned them concerning this and they went on and passed the test but told me "they may need replacing soon" I knew this was a lie but became very suspicious when my brakes started screaming the moment I left the garage. I suspected they may have changed one of the pads on the rear side for a worn one. I am not a mechanic so waited until I could afford to have them replaced elsewhere and sure enough, the rear left brake pad was completely worn while the other pad was fine. -
Citroen Xsara Picasso (2000 - 2010) - Brakes : MOT vs AA inspection 17 Mar 2009 (Forum)
The car was needed somewhat urgently due to family circumstances, so for piece of mind I booked a AA inspection. A few minor things came up, along with the more disturbing "those front brakes are an MOT failure mate". My first course of action was to contact the garage with a view to them arranging and paying for the cost of the parts and labour. Long story short and after a barrage of abuse from said trader (who would appear to be bipolar, due to his change in viewpoint regarding customer service!) -
Mk1 Punto new front brake pad binding 16 Jan 2007 (Forum)
My son recently had the front brake pads and discs replaced at a fast fit operation as the pads were on their way out. Now the new front offside pads keep binding sporadically after the car has been driven a couple of miles as shown by the wheel heating up and a burning smell. -
Servo/M Cylinder 1995 Audi A6 23 Nov 2006 (Forum)
I then took it for a test run and everything appeared normal however after a few miles the brakes began to bind on. I think it was all brakes not just one set. I have removed the master cylinder and again can find nothing obviously wrong. Before spending several hundred pounds on replacing the master cylinder and or servo and possibly the ABS pump I wonder if anyone has heard of similar symptoms. -
Voiding warranty - can they do this? 11 Sep 2005 (Forum)
The car still has 6 months warranty, but the dealer wants to charge nearly £600 to the job where as I can source the parts myself for less than £200 and get them fitted for no more than an extra £100. Can the dealer/renault leagally void a warranty in this way? I can understand if they said the brakes were no longer covered. Surely, brakes, as a consumable should be exempt and I should be able to get them changed where and when I require it? On this line getting tyres changed would also void a warranty?! -
Renault Trafic Rear Brakes and MOT 19 Apr 2003 (Forum)
I am really desperate because I need this van to move materials and tools away from my property I have nearly finished and into my garage. The previous MOT has expired. The rear brakes and the handbrake have failed the test but the garage I used cannot find any evidence of air, leaks or anything like that. The linings are fairly new but should have been given plenty of time to bed in. -
Chevrolet Orlando - ABS warning light coming on when turning 26 Feb 2025 (Forum)
It happens more when turning the steering wheel. To add some more info to this, sometimes once its activated i can feel the brake pedal lower a bit more ( if braking) and make a slight grinding sound Seems strange it only started happening once the new tyre had been fitted by the tyre fitters and was obviously not fitted correctly as it lost air soon after. -
Ford focus style (100) 1.6 petrol year 1999 - FORD FOCUS PARKING HANDBRAKE 14 Nov 2019 (Forum)
I am informed by one self employed mechanic ( that because the car hand brake only just holds when the handbrake is fully pulled up to the last link, that the car rear brake shoes would need replacing. How can I check the shoes to confirm this and how much should I be looking at in total to replace the vehicles rear shoes and front wheel pads if they need replacing ? -
