• Semi automatic handbrakes 31 Aug 2003 (Forum)
Whats wrong with a normal hand brake?
• Nissan Sunny Electric Fault 9 Apr 2003 (Forum)
Hi, I've got a problem with a J-reg Nissan Sunny in that when you press the brake peddle, the sidelights come on. Haven't seen it for myself yet, not my car, but the only solution at the moment it to drive with the sidelights on! Any idea what could be causing this? Owner says she also hears a click when she presses the brake peddle.
• Saab 900 discs and brakes. 11 Feb 2003 (Forum)
Evening all, I checked my discs and pads today, and thought they could probably do with replacing, as it's an automatic, and is heavy on pads anyway. So...
• technical one... 30 Aug 2001 (Forum)
quick query... my car pulls slightly to right under acceleration, and to left under braking. there's nothing wrong with the brakes (the balance has been checked), and i was wondering what would be the first thing one of the mechanics out there would look for. the car is a '97 fiesta with 40k on the clock, hence front wheel drive and i'm suspecting play in the front bushes, which are then affecting the geometry of the car depending on the load being placed on the components.
• Seized nuts and bolts 2 Mar 2001 (Forum)
Hi, I am a Classic Car enthusiast and would like a few suggestins of how to remove seized nuts etc in a cramped position e.g the REAR of a brake assembly. (or Brake bleed nipples with rounded corners ??)etc etc ? I know all the normal ways such as correct size spanner !!/ penetrating oil/heat /nut splitter /hacksaw /grinder but what about those inaccessible positions?
• Vauxhall Zafira Tourer - Advice after MOT Fail 27 Jan 2020 (Forum)
I was horrified to see that the MOT fail for dangerously worn brake pads is on there from 2018. This leads me to two conclusions. Either the brake pads had not been replaced in the February, which I paid for and still have the receipt for, or the garage thought that they would try and charge me for new brake pads which I clearly didn't need.
• Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - 2.0 TDCi - Fuel System and Brake Light Despair! 16 Nov 2007 (Forum)
Took delivery August 2005. This new car started playing up almost immediately. Two issues - first the brake lights - I would brake and the lights wouldn't come on or alternatively they would activate when no brake pedal/hand brake had been touched. Secondly the vehicle would just loose all power. Almost lost my life on the A12 trying to visit my kids.
• ALB under difficult conditions 16 Dec 2006 (Forum)
The car also was unsteerable, slaloming across the road from side to side. What did stop the car were the aforementioned bollards, not the brakes. I have previously personally experienced something like the above when driving a Toyota RAV on smooth snow, pushing the brake pedal so hard that the seat-back bent and producing only a very slight braking effect with non-existent steering.
• Citroen ZX (1992 - 1998) - 1996 1.9TD drumming / knocking noise 8 Jan 2009 (Forum)
I can't feel it either through the brake pedal (suggesting rear brakes), nor through the steering wheel - suggesting a front brake problem. When you have to slow down gradually this vibration does not appear. I have a feeling that this is probably not a brake problem as both front calipers, discs, pads and the rear shoes have been changed recently.
• Argh! MOT due next month :-( 6 Apr 2007 (Forum)
The garage were excellent and called me within an hour to say that they think that I'm being premature with the clutch but that they've looked at the rear brakes and they need replacing completely, new discs, handbrake shoes (it was totally non-operational on one side of the car) and a recommended new set of brake pads as the ones that were on were very cheap.
• any disk brake equipped - Coke can for brake disks 15 Sep 2015 (Forum)
Coke cans for Brake Disks.   Not actually AS brake disks, but to clean them up a bit.   Exhibit A : Drivers side front hub and brakes.         I put the foil on the hub a couple of years ago to stop the wheels rusting on.
• Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - Suspension Problems Ford Focus. Any Advice pls? 8 Feb 2010 (Forum)
Nothing special just a family run around. 64K genuine mileage just had a full service. At the service they changed the front brakes and the front right shock. (apparently the shock had leaked onto the brake causing unusual brake wear?? Anyway. Since the work was done everytime I press the brake it knocks. The noise is intermittent.
• Battery draining itself Tommy Cooper stylee 29 Jan 2002 (Forum)
Jump start - quick drive, got out, brake lights on, keys not even in ignition. Brake pedal appears to be bordering on triggering the brakelight even at rest, this would explain battery drain. Glad its not a more obscure electrical fault.
• Squealing Astra 1 Feb 2023 (Forum)
Each time the car is taken to garage for inspection the problem never seems to occur. I'm 99% certain that it is coming from 1 of the wheels on the RHS. I have eliminated the brakes as being the culprit as the car has had new brakes and calipers 4 discs and pads all round under warranty last year due to a fault. They have been inspected on 2 occasions in recent days and 2 garages confirm that the brakes are ok.
• Honda Civic Sport 1.5 - Electric brake failure 22 Nov 2021 (Forum)
A local Honda dealership has run diagnostics and said there are no faults! What other explanation is there for this to happen? If the brake hadn't been on it would have rolled before I'd even got out of the car. Ive6put in a complaint to Honda UK but haven't heard anything yet. Any advice?
• 3.0 D - Jaguar XF reliability 27 Jun 2018 (Forum)
First of all though a bit of history: Back in December 2015 I kept getting a warning saying "Park Brake Fault" - to cut a longish story short it seems that Jaguar positioned the brake computer below the tube from the windscreen wash fluid bottle. When this leaked, water dripped on to the brake computer - Jaguar did pay the entire bill - over £1000.
• Any - Rusty handbrake 15 Jul 2014 (Forum)
The HJ column in the Telgraph OnLine 12 July has a section "Should the brakes squeal..."   My son bought a car from one of the car supermarkets, (won't don't do that again !!), and the rear brakes were unusable.  The drums were corroded so badly that powdered rust was dropping out.
• vauxhall insignia - electric hand brake , whats the problem! 6 Feb 2013 (Forum)
why does every one moan about electric hand brakes?I was a bit concerned when i went for a test drive before i bought the car as im an enthusiastic driver but now i think its great, i pull the leaver and it comes on i then just select a gear and pull away and it disengages automatically, i can even stop on a hill without even doing any thing as it applies automatically perhaps im getting lazy with old age!
• Vectra P-Reg - Dash & Brake Lights Failure, Not A Blown Fuse 20 Oct 2012 (Forum)
Speedo, temp guage, fuel guage, indicators...Everything went off. I was pulled by the Police just after it and to be told i had no brake lights either, i told the officer that my dash had also just gone off (the timing was really bad) and thankfully, they let me go but only after following me to the local supermarket car park and parked it there.
• BMW Mini One 05 - Brake pad warning light problem 28 Aug 2012 (Forum)
Would appreciate any info with this problem, changed the wife's front pads a couple of months back they were well down but the brake pad sensor was not damaged in any way, changed the pads and three weeks later the light on the dash comes on!!! do a search on google info states if you leave the ignition on for approx 30secs the light will go out, it did but came back on two days later, must be the sensor fit a new non gen item same thing but took three days before it was back on.
