It is time to put the 22 year old Golf to pasture, and a new larger family car is required. Only 2 isofix are needed, but a larger boot for prams, shopping and ancillary bits like say a children's bike every now and then.
Having had the Golf since new, would like a car that's not just functional, but also with some interest. Something "nice". ... Read more

Today I received a text message and missed called from an insurance underwrite asking me to call them about an alleged incident I was involved in.
Having checked that they were indeed the underwriter on a now-expired policy and that the number they gave was for that firm, I gave them a ring. ... Read more
Yes, she’s right, don’t worry about it. But sometimes we can’t help but be scared or cautious because scams these days are getting more creative.

Large gateway 30 mph signs mark the start of the speed limit. The first lamp post is 274 metres into the restricted area. There are no repeater signs or road markings indicating the limit. Two of the first five lamp posts are buried in the tree line with the light totally obscured by the branches, so they cannot be seen and do not throw light onto the carriageway when lit. The lamp posts are all drab, dirty dark green, so are inconspicuous. Direction 11 of the Traffic Signs & General Directions, as amended, states that speed limit signs cannot be placed along a road where there is carriageway lighting not more than 183 metres apart, and which is subject to a 30 mph speed limit. A 30 mph limit applies where there are three or more lamps throwing light on the carriageway and placed not more than 183 metres apart. Is the speed limit legal and enforceable please? . Read more
Current legislation is if there are street lighs its 30mph unless there are signs to the contra
Here in Sunny Hampshire the council has decided a large deficit will result in less spending on roads amongst other things. My local roads need maintaince, pot holes, white lines fading everywhere etc. Went to Morocco recently expecting terrible roads, soon changed my mind…theirs are much better than ours. Our county council is anti motorist.
Don't understand this - George was Chancellor until 2016, not 2017.
yes, Osborne did it when he was chancellor, the changes were supposed to come into force from 2017 so you could buy a fiesta 1.0 for example, on the 31 March 2017, and pay zero ved, but if you bought the same car on the 1st April 2017, it would cost £130 in ved, the government would use this for general taxation until 2020, then the revenue collected would be spent on the roads..
One advantage with ride sharing apps like Uber is that the price is known beforehand.
With metered taxi, there is no way to guess what the final price is going to be.... Read more
Last 5 week trip to Spain I left my car at the airport - Silver Zone, 5 minute courtesy bus to terminal. Cost I recall was about £110 - less than the price of taxis there and back.
Also had the benefit that all travel was within my control, not reliant on taxis turning up at the right time - although in fairness a failure to pick up would be somewhat unusual.
When I bought my car last year (TDi) I was doing regular 60 mile motorway trips 2 or 3 times a week. Since then my circumstances have changed dramatically and I am now finding myself doing mainly town driving for short distances and I suspected that this may become an issue in time.
I am finding that the car is performing regens more and more often but have been caught out by quite a few of them (not realising - quite why clever manufacturers can't 'invent' a dashboard notification is beyond me) where I have killed the engine before it's been fully completed. Each time i have made sure the car's next run is a lengthy one at higher speeds and have noticed no repetition....until the next time when I have reverted to town driving once more. The need for me to have to take the car on a run purely to negate this is becoming irritating.... Read more

I understand from a news item that the proposed introduction of Euro 7emission standards has been postponed until 2030 by the EU.
I can't find any recent reference to this on HJ or national news sites in the UK.... Read more
‘Seems funny that the UK is sticking with 2025, Normally the UK just agrees with everything the EU comes out with.’
I’m not sure how we implement the regulations five years before the EU - no manufacturer is going to develop new technology for the UK alone, then roll it out for the rest of the EU 60 months later.
It’s 2030 according to the EU themselves - www.europarl.europa.eu/news/en/press-room/20231207...s
This week our current insurer Direct Line has sent us a renewal. Nissan Micra 2007 up 63%, set Alhambra 2016 up 52%. We have more than 9 years no claims... Comparison websites have shown similar if not more expensive increases. Excess offered at over 50% of the original cost of the premium. Who can I complain to? Read more
My Direct Line renewal went up by around 50% too, but half an hour on t web soon had a quote that was lower than last years premium. Shop around, there are firms who are capitalising on the financial suicide the big names are suffering from. No one should renew with a firm showing such blatant greed, vote with your feet.

Make sure you take a test drive in the CX-5.
It is very comfortable and relaxing to drive but if you are used to plenty of low down torque in your engines, it will take a bit of an adjustment....
