I want to change the oil&filter and air filter on our 1.4 petrol Modus. There is no Haynes manual for this car, so I was wondering whether the engine is similar/same as another Renault model? The plugs for this model are v. expensive - any ideas on how long I can leave them in for? Any tips re tricky things to look out for? Many thanks :-) Read more

Many thanks for tips and encouragement! All done now, and have learned the following:

The plastic tray under the engine can be swivelled back and out of the way after removing the 5 bolts and detaching just one of the rear push fit connectors, making it easier to reconnect. The drain plug has a square recess of 8 mm, so I had to make a key - very luckily I had an old 8x8 mm bar at the bottom of a toolbox ! I would recommend make the key as short as possible, e.g. 2.5 cm. The filter appears to be impossible to remove without spillage, so wear nitrile gloves (cheap these days). The air filter (bought at the same time as the oil & filter) is fortunately a doddle to replace....

A Haynes manual should be available for a 20-year-old car with photos in it to answer these questions. Should be able to find a cheap copy on E-bay.

Are you sure it's not a Pozidriv, I doubt if it would be a JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard)?...

We have recently had Brighton Hill roundabout finished after around two years. It's attracting lots of criticism from 17 driving instructors who say how can they show pupils how to use it when they don't understand it themselves. It's even making the national news. Traffic lights are on the roundabout and each change to green starts the gran prix with vehicles in the wrong lanes cutting across others to access one of the 6 exits. Good luck to any visitors using it. Read more

Locals haven’t had any time to develop auto pilot. The main concern is turning right. You have to enter from the RH lane, you have then to change from the outside lane to the inside lane for the 5th exit. Unfortunately the joining traffic can block your progress, confused drivers change lanes, cut across. Indeed I’ve seen cars just stop with their hazards going awaiting a chance to change lanes.

TFL is proposing to remove traffic lanes at Holland Park Roundabout and Shepherds Bush Green, in order to improve cycling and pedestrian travel. There is a consultation on TFL's Have Your Say website. I would be grateful if anyone interested could take a look and provide input. I'm not at all keen as this would increase traffic jams and push cars to drive longer distances, before they could turn south. I would be affected.

If this isn't the right place to post please do respond with advice as to where I could post to alert drivers or others wanting to input.... Read more

Can't see any harm in this so it can stay up but we will lock it so it doesn't descend into the usual cyclist v motorist battles which have been done to death on here.

If anyone feels strongly one way or the other about the proposal then fill it in....

I have a new Renault Clio Hybrid. I have concerns over a couple of sounds:

1. Droning noise around 30 mph. Not at lower speed though so can’t be pedestrian warning of hybrids.
2. Some rattling noise from rear left hand from where the traction battery is placed in the trunk. I have checked it’s not the seat belt buckles rubbing on plastic or any item stored in the trunk. More pronounced on cold morning. Read more

You will only know by comparing to another model. Take it back to the dealer if you are concerned, that's what the warranty is for.

I have a new Renault Clio automatic. My driveway has a bit of slope as the street is sloping down. I have observed that when I take a hard left and then hard right in reverse gear while manoeuvring to park in the bay I hear a creaking or clunking kind of sound as if a metal to metal contact under pressure. Same goes when I do the opposite of that to take out the car from the driveway. The car comes with hill start assist, electronic hand brake and autohold as it is an automatic. Just wondering if the sound is normal as there is always some sort of braking action compounding with so much steering. I don't hear it when steering left or right on normal speeds. Anyone experienced similar? Read more

" I have observed that when I take a hard left and then hard right in reverse gear while manoeuvring to park in the bay I hear a creaking or clunking kind of sound as if a metal to metal contact under pressure"

That puts immense pressure on the steering rack and its holding bushes. I suggest you try spraying the rack bushes with WD40 (or some more expensive rubber lubricant) and see what happens....

Something is pulling the 5V reference down. Could be a failed component or a wiring problem. You could try unplugging the MAF and EGR (not all that easy) and see if that resolves the 5V fault and allows it to start. An almost identical fault: frenchcarforum.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=34404 turned out to be the EGR valve.
