Every once in a while the brake pedal in my Polo goes spongy. If I immediately release the pedal and reapply it the brakes work just fine.

Front disks and pads are not worn, brake fluid level checked and is to correct level and no obvious signs of a leak. Any thoughts on what might be the cause please? Read more

The 2013 Hyundai i10 seems normal with no warning lights on the dashboard, despite having only a small amount of engine oil in the dipstick, empty brake fluid tanks, and empty coolant tanks. Why is that? What should I do next? Read more

So, after the last 'Service', do we know for a fact that all of the fluids you mention above were actually checked and topped up? As I suggested above, top them up again and check the levels weekly and have a good look under the bonnet for witness marks of a leak - this might be if it looks 'wet' or whitish residue left from when the fluid has evaporated.

I don't know how mechanically minded you are. Does the engine bay look clean or is it filthy so checking for leaks will be difficult. Could you wipe around some of the easy to access areas? Does the car have an undertray beneath the engine that would stop any drips onto the road/drive?

Hello,

I am looking to buy a Toyota Camry. There are two 2013 Toyota Camrys I am looking at.

One is the 2.0L VVTI Petrol Automatic 4 Speed Transmission and the other is the 2.5 Dual VVTI Petrol Automatic Six Speed (I think) Transmission. Both are same spec Camrys.

Driving in the UK with quite expensive Petrol prices I obviously want to have the best MPG. My question is will there be a big noticeable difference in real MPG?

I drive mostly Motorways driving.

Also are there others advantages and disadvantages between the two.

I will be buying one, I just want to make the correct choice.

Thank you,

Matt. Read more

I take your point but I would add the Camry is actually equivalent to the ES.

Yes, but the ES only appeared in the UK 2019, so without a bigger budget and/or high miles, that would also mean an import. There is the option of a GS, but a hybrid one of them (within a similar budget to those two imports) would be a different kettle of fish with about 345bhp!. ...

Hi.

I'm considering a Cat N car, which the seller - a dealer - claims they don't understand how warranted this category, as when they received it, it only required a polish to remove a light surface scratch on one wing. No dents, no touch-up, nothing.... Read more

I am looking to buy a Peugeot 2008 1.6ltr Diesel and preferably the 120bhp version (with 6 speed gearbox).

I am wondering - as I can't seem to find anything on the subject - are the 100bhp and 120bhp engines the same engine but just chipped for the power differences? Obviously the extra 6th gear does not give it the extra power... but i am just curious re: engines of the same size but differing power outputs.... Read more

hello there,

I seem to be having a issue with my car recently, my car has about 45,000 miles, it appears that at random intervals my gear stick don't seem to shift in gear (up or down gears), after a few clutch peddle pumps (or just holding in the clutch peddle) it will eventually go into gear, after it has happened it is fine to drive, it is not a Pacific gear nor is the gear stick stiff, my car does not seem to be leaking any transmission fluid either, the clutch has not slipped at all, however the clutch peddle has gone soft once but still sprang back, and with in 3 seconds it had resistance again and was not soft and slotted back into gear. (that is the newest thing it has just done) and was fine after, I just can not figure out why it is fine most of the time apart from the odd occasion. Read more

Hi, can anyone translate an invoice. My engine failed under warranty and it remained with a Land Rover dealership for almost 4 months whilst they waited for the new engine. I collected it on Friday and when I looked at the invoice it says Engine - stripped, quantity 1. Total invoice £14495.22. Does this mean the engine has been replaced with a new one as I was told? There are other items mainly gaskets (turbocharge), pipes fuel-injection, O- Rings and water pump. I have asked for clarification but had no response as yet. Can any with more knowledge than me confirm this was in-fact a new engine? Thanks Read more

It was a 2020 reg, yes ecoboost engine but it didn’t have any catastrophic failure just a weird noise that they couldn’t get parts for anytime soon…

I posted earlier and thanks so much for your advice. So I am looking for a car up to £9k, probs a super mini. I've established Corsa 1.4 is not a bad one. Also considering Suzuki swift. Any other ideas for a good reliable little car Please? Read more

Engineer Andy

The Corsa 1.4 with just 75bhp is actually perfectly adequate on the road 95% of the time. It’s designed with low speed torque on mind and it doesn’t feel sluggish around town or in normal use out on the road. It’s certainly no rocket ship but it’s mechanically simple and generally robust. I

Sounds like it could be similar to that Suzuki Alto I had as a courtesy car. I suppose you just have to be extra careful planning overtakes on single up/down roads and pulling out from a standing start into fast flowing traffic at junctions, which is what i had to do with my 90s 1L Micra.

Please can anyone suggest my best way forwards. My engine seems to be overheating as the coolant boils out of expansion tank and makes a mess. I tried a test this morning with a cold engine and coolant refilled to the maximum mark:

1) Started cold engine - still no leaks from anywhere after 15 minutes... Read more

<< The pressure in the cooling system is directly related to temperature. The hotter the engine the greater the coolant expands, and the higher the pressure. As the engine temperature falls the coolant contracts and the pressure reduces. The cooling system pressure is therefore regulated by the temperature. >>

To be strictly accurate, 'coolant' expands as temperature rises, just like everything else, but the expansion of the liquid would be scarcely noticeable in the ballast reservoir. It's the rising vapour pressure of the water (1 bar when it boils) which lifts the relief valve if the engine overheats....
