hello there,
I seem to be having a issue with my car recently, my car has about 45,000 miles, it appears that at random intervals my gear stick don't seem to shift in gear (up or down gears), after a few clutch peddle pumps (or just holding in the clutch peddle) it will eventually go into gear, after it has happened it is fine to drive, it is not a Pacific gear nor is the gear stick stiff, my car does not seem to be leaking any transmission fluid either, the clutch has not slipped at all, however the clutch peddle has gone soft once but still sprang back, and with in 3 seconds it had resistance again and was not soft and slotted back into gear. (that is the newest thing it has just done) and was fine after, I just can not figure out why it is fine most of the time apart from the odd occasion. Read more
I posted earlier and thanks so much for your advice. So I am looking for a car up to £9k, probs a super mini. I've established Corsa 1.4 is not a bad one. Also considering Suzuki swift. Any other ideas for a good reliable little car Please? Read more
The Corsa 1.4 with just 75bhp is actually perfectly adequate on the road 95% of the time. It’s designed with low speed torque on mind and it doesn’t feel sluggish around town or in normal use out on the road. It’s certainly no rocket ship but it’s mechanically simple and generally robust. I
Sounds like it could be similar to that Suzuki Alto I had as a courtesy car. I suppose you just have to be extra careful planning overtakes on single up/down roads and pulling out from a standing start into fast flowing traffic at junctions, which is what i had to do with my 90s 1L Micra.
Please can anyone suggest my best way forwards. My engine seems to be overheating as the coolant boils out of expansion tank and makes a mess. I tried a test this morning with a cold engine and coolant refilled to the maximum mark:
1) Started cold engine - still no leaks from anywhere after 15 minutes... Read more
<< The pressure in the cooling system is directly related to temperature. The hotter the engine the greater the coolant expands, and the higher the pressure. As the engine temperature falls the coolant contracts and the pressure reduces. The cooling system pressure is therefore regulated by the temperature. >>
To be strictly accurate, 'coolant' expands as temperature rises, just like everything else, but the expansion of the liquid would be scarcely noticeable in the ballast reservoir. It's the rising vapour pressure of the water (1 bar when it boils) which lifts the relief valve if the engine overheats....
A friend told me this car is for chavs, not a 61 year old woman. What do you think? Thinking of buying this car and don't want to be ridiculed. Tia Read more
Thanks all! Useful and sometimes funny comments.
clutch fails to engage , sat at junction in first gear , lift clutch to move off , does not engage engine acts like car is in neutral but is in first gear. after a few attempts acts normal again . no noises or anything unusal ,clutch pedal comes up as normal just does not engage gear Read more
Think the gearbox will need to come out to check the friction and pressure plate .
Yup, sounds like a gearbox off job then - as well as replacing the above replace clutch release fork bushes which are a known fail point and obviously a new release bearing. I'd still fit a new slave cylinder anyway whilst you are at it - cheap.
2017 Kia Sportage just been in for 7th service and MOT. Just prior to service notified service department of a twanging noise/clunk when steering lock applied (both ways). This was looked at in service and confirmed to be worn/failing top mount to drivers side. Recommend changing as a pair and requiring immediate attention.
Car fully serviced by Kia and still within warranty period. However, dealer says not covered under warranty as apparently this is a wear and tear issue, which begs the question, what’s the benefit of Kia’s 7 year warranty over say VW’s 3 year warranty if items like this aren’t covered.
If this was brake pads or discs, bulbs, wipers etc I could understand these are items with a limited life, but would have assumed a suspension component would be covered by the warranty.
So whilst it did pass the MOT, having a car that makes a twanging clunk to the extent that I can feel it through the steering wheel and it can be heard outside the car is not ideal.
Cost to replace not cheap at £763.90 + VAT from dealers.
What are people’s thoughts on whether this should be covered under the warranty? Mileage is just over 50k. On speaking with Kia, they claim the issue is wear and tear and therefore not covered under warranty. I should add that issue appeared suddenly, and has not come of gradually or worsened over time. As I mentioned in a previous post (now removed as part of the clean-up), no-one is right all the time and clearly the main dealer here needs to get their act together.
There is no need for some of the self-congratulation or indeed the tedious stick-poking that resulted....
Hi, I have a late 2019 Land Rover Discovery 5 HSE 2.0 diesel. The engine completely failed on Nov 1 2023. The car was taken to the LR dealership and because I had a LR extended warranty a new engine was ordered for the car and covered by LR. The engine finally arrived a week ago and it was fitted this week (Feb 5th 2024). During the Discovery’s three month wait at the dealership I received a phone call (from LR tracking) on Dec 31st 2023 to say the power had been disabled and had the car been stolen? I phoned the dealership and they said it was fine. The same thing happened today and this time I have been told by the dealership that the battery is now fully dead and will not hold a charge. They say I need to pay for a new one at a cost to me of £401.54. My question is, should the main LR dealership have looked after my battery for the three months it was with them and is it their fault my battery has failed. What should I do or agree to? Read more
I suppose it doesn't really matter. You'll get the money back when you sell it next week. You are getting rid of it aren't you?
Can anyone recommend a decent shampoo that doesn’t smear the windscreen please? I’ve given up on my local car wash as they spray something all over the car that leaves the windscreen in a dreadful state. I also find that washing it myself with the branded products has a similar impact. I can’t see a thing at night particularly when a car is coming towards me with headlights on? Or do I just have to clean the windscreen separately afterwards? Read more
