Looking for new slave cylinder to try and eliminate possible problem with notchy clutch pedal. It's quite possible it's not the slave, but it's the easiest/cheapest place to start.
But looking on Autodoc, there are a ton of aftermarket suppliers - some well know brands, many unknown. I doubt very much all of them, possibly none of them, actually manufacture the part. So how do I know which is actually the original brand, so I'm not replacing a possibly perfect original with a possible poor replacement? Parts listed are: Ridex, FTE, Valeo, Sachs, NTY, TRW, Febi, ABS, Samko, Brembo, Delphi, Ferodo, Cifam. Probably only one or two companies actually make the original part, and probably one one or two make all the off brands. Read more

I have been hearing some groaning noise from my new automatic Clio hybrid at low speed when braking and moving off in start-stop traffic and on slopes. I have a habit of feathering off the brake to get a smooth stop. I came across a technical article on brake creep groan which explained the stick-slip phenomenon between the brake pad and the disc at low speeds especially prone to automatic cars which results in low frequency vibrations. It is related to the brake pad material as the friction coefficient has a role to play in it. The issue is present in even expensive cars and manufacturers do a lot of research to optimise it but have to strike a balance between NVH comfort and achieving shorter braking distance.
Just interested in knowing who else has experienced this and the make/model of the car. What did you do to mitigate the sound? Read more
Couldn’t agree more . Op should have bought an older car with less technology.
So should you all. You're just encouraging them.
My son and his girlfriend have lived in Manchester for years, but have their minds set on moving to the Rossendale area. I guess they are looking at average prices for housing in the region.
They both work in IT and rarely need to access Manchester, but occasional visits by car or public transport probably a requirement. Mountain Biking is their leisure activity,... Read more

The headlights in this car are perfectly acceptable for town and motorway driving but on dark country roads they're not really up to the job. I'd planned on replacing them with Bosch Plus 90 bulbs which I've found strike a good compromise between added visibility whilst not blistering the eyesight of oncoming drivers. However, the car's manual prescribes H7u bulbs to avoid UV light damaging the headlight plastics and I can't find these for sale anywhere. Could it be that all H7 bulbs now anti-UV?

Thank you. I'll go with it and keep my fingers crossed.
I have a 2011 Toyota Yaris, she has done 42,000 miles and is bullet proof- passes her MOT and I have not needed to spend much on her in the three years that I have had her. However she is getting old I am worried she will need more expensive repairs etc, it is a bit small- I have a toddler now, a dog, I do only 1-2K miles a year so not a lot of miles. It lacks power- up hills etc and just feels a bit tired now.
I am thinking about possibly replacing her for something newer, bigger, with a few more mod cons- I would like something very reliable, economical and preferably an automatic.... Read more
have Yaris's got rev limiters?
My '14 reg 1.3 petrol will do an indicated 80MPH in third as it hits the rev limiter - with three more gears to go!
(Not sure where to post this so I tried to take the broadest forum space here)

Hi. Following advice on here I have decided to replace the engine with HGF with a tested secondhand unit. I've changed a few engines but I'm reading conflicting reports about the way to get this engine out. Haynes say it has to come out underneath, others say if you remove front bumper, rads etc it will come out that way and others say it will hoist out the top no problem. I don't have access to a lift so hoping I can do it with an engine crane. Read more
Best way is to drop the whole power train with the gearbox out the bottom. But as you’ve only got a crane , then it’s likely you’ll need to split the engine and gearbox in situ . Removing the bumper and radiators is probably a good idea whichever way you do it. Just gives more swinging room .
I finally put a deposit on a car, it is from the main dealer. The dealer emailed me the contract and I have to sign it. However, the odometer reading has been left blank. It has the wording "*Recorded mileage cannot be relied upon as the actual mileage run by the vehicle"
How can an 'approved' car, if have the mileage left off?
The car is 2018, but it has main dealer service history, except for a couple of year where it has been serviced independently.... Read more
If a car has been serviced outside the dealer network, then they can’t confirm its history. If you’re not happy , walk away and find another. Any dealer / trader has to verify within reason , a car’s history. If they can’t do that , then a disclaimer will apply.
Even though they could 'verify' it if the car was maintained solely at main dealerships of that other brand via its electronic service record, technically no dealership can 100% verify the mileage and maintenance record unless they themselves maintained it and trust every mechanic who's worked on it to:
