A car we here can all afford...not. Any chance in reviewing cars that don't require two extra mortgages or us to have a 6-figure plus salary? Y'Know, that mere mortals can buy (and not £30k EVs)?

Thanks. Read more

Good Morning

I'm Hoping someone may be able to help with this .....

A few weeks ago after driving to the shop my car wouldn't start, after an hour it started and I drove home in nipping into the house to get something and back out it wouldn't start again (nothing not turning) Spark plugs, cam sensor & cam sensor were changed and it appeared all ok.

Fast forward a few weeks & now at intermittent periods it wont start it will either
a) attempt to start, makes the trying to start noise then the engine kicks in
OR
b) Tries to start and fails then in starting again it starts 2nd time no problem

This happens at intermittent periods for example I may be at work for 8 hours comes out and either a) or b) happens

In checking it on a ramp leaving it running etc there is nothing visible as the issue

Any advice, experience or fixes would me much appreciated. Read more

In the old days one might have suspected a fault in the ignition switch, a relay, or the starter motor ....

Hello
On my uk model Vw mk5 jetta (same as golf) I am getting an error code 01638 which says it is a rear sensor drivers side on my Delphi diagnostic kit.
However does anyone know if this is for left hand drive or right hand drive?

My car is right hand drive, I don’t what to replace the wrong sensor !

Whichever side it is, I’d be checking the wiring to it first before condemning the sensor.

Hi

When i went to fill my screenwash on my Nissan Cube the other week I noticed it looks like oil is getting out of the filler cap. So a couple of noddy questions - could it just be the seal on the filler cap? the o-rings on it look fine and don't look perished and probably the second more important question is should oil be getting anywhere near there in the first place? I've monitored once a week and it's certainly not pouring out but it certainly looks like it's reoccurring and not just a one off. Happy enough to try a new filler cap or o-ring but want to make sure i'm not ignoring a more important problem! Read more

Engine oil will get up to the base of the cap as it gets splashed around in the cam box cover . I’d be worried if it didn’t.

Hi

I thinking to replace soon the coolant in my car, and just wondering if I have to use recommended Honda Coolant Type 2 ? The Honda coolant is not so expensive (about 25 pounds / 5 L), but as the previous owner of Mazda, I have a 5L bottle of high quality genuine Mazda F22 Long Life coolant:... Read more

<< Coolant should last the life of the car. >>

That's easily said, John, and I agree with the sentiment. But I have seen more than one engine where it was perfectly obvious that coolant wasn't doing that. Most likely that was because of steady losses which had been gradually replaced with plain water....

Hi,
Tonight whilst driving I needed to pull over and being on a dual carriageway where it would not be appropriate to stop, I pulled into a bus stop, as I just needed a moment to check my route. I had my hazards on, I may have briefly turned off my engine. I was there for about ten seconds, then moved back off.

I see now the bus stop had red lines. https://www.google.com/maps/@51.6023875,0.2...6384!8i8192

There was no signage eg "no stopping at anytime" to accompany it. I can't see any cameras according to streetview, can anyone here see any?

Are there any exceptions to this? Honestly if I am fined £80 I will be gutted because I've literally spent 9 hours working today driving around so it will have all been for nothing if done for that. Ironicalyl the reason I puleld was to avoid the inappropriate use of my phone whilst driving which would have also got me fined/and points. Read more

I imagine TfL will send them all a fine anyway!

Hi

I recently posted about the reliability of the Honda Jazz Auto and people suggested the post 2011 models are the best option.... Read more

The Mazda 2 automatic has used a torque converter auto since the 2nd gen came out in around 2007. AFAIK the first gen cars used the same single clutch automated manual (Durashift) as fitted to the 1.4 Ford Fiesta (6th gen) and Fusion (the 1.6 versions used a t/c)

With a £6k budget you'll get a late 2nd gen facelift car (around 2013) and yes, they are very reliable. ...

Would you please advise, what causes this whistle at cold engine start? It's a belt from the alternator or something else?

As above. All I hear is a ticking noise at what appears to be every revolution of the belt. I suspect a small piece of grit has embedded itself in one of the grooves. I have an old stiff tooth brush bent to 90 deg (by heating with blow torch) which I have used to carefully clean the poly-v channels. I still have all my fingers!
