The other day (not much on the usual channels) we watched an episode of "Scotland Yard" from 1960, black and white footage of London as detectives solved a crime.
Older members may recall this series (narrated by Edgar Lustgarten) younger members may find pictures of 1960's life of interest.... Read more

Pre-1997 drivers renewing their licences at 70 had to pass a medical and eyesight test to retain the C1 D1 classification they got when they passed their tests. This could not be done online and required two forms to be filled in and signed by an optician and doctor.
Is this still true? Read more
specsavers charge £10 to fill there part of the form in and my doctor charged me £40 for the medical form and this was to drive scouts mini bus grrrr
Evening All,
Hope you can help. For the last 3 weeks I am been having issues starting my car from cold.
Here is what happens...
First attempt - nearly catches, then immediately stalls.
Second attempt - just cranks. Doesn’t even catch.
Third/Forth attempt - starts.
This now happens every time I start the car from cold. Once the car has been running and the engine is warm it starts fine. I thought is might be battery related, but I changed it about 2 weeks ago and I still have the issue.
Any thoughts? I was thinking glow plugs or fuel pump. I was thinking injectors, but the car starts fine when warm which is the opposite of what I have read.
Some other bits....
Car has done 86k miles. It was built in 2016.
No engine warning lights
Car has a full service history and had a major service about 4 months ago.
I have a OBD2 reader in case somebody can suggest a parameter I should look at.
Thanks in advance Read more
Air getting into the fuel system most likely.
Whoops. Not a drive-thru here ;-)
So ram-raiders are targeting Go-Cat and Whiskas bikkies now. I blame Brexit.
Low quality cat burglars?...
guys/girls (and the undecided..) is there REALLY a difference between injector cleaner, and turbo cleaner? Both are added to the fuel, but surely, a good fuel/injector cleaner, will also clean the turbo vanes, via the fuel vapour?
I get a little smoke, at speed, usually around 75mph, no smoke under load/acceleration, no lights on dash, no lack of power!... Read more
As said, I don't see how adding things to the fuel can affect the turbo much. As regards injector cleaner, I have relied on that in the past, especially just before an emissions test, but I now find that occasional use of super-diesel (e.g. V-power) has a similar effect and probably costs about the same overall. The engine clearly likes it anyway, judging from the sound and 'feel'.
Turbos stay happier with oil changes a bit more often than the makers suggest.
Whilst out walking (try to do 5 miles a day) got to thinking about the new car dealers in town back in the 60’s compared to now and its rather surprised me considering how many more cars are bought now compared to 60 years ago.

Once located in the town centre and surrounding roads they are now to be found in a purpose built complex and JLR have combined forces and opened a new joint site near to junction 15 A along the lines of IKEA....
Hi all
I often hear that in the US you're able to 'rent' 'one-time tools' like: ball joint separators, presses, pilot bearing removal tools, etc. for free from local parts stores. AFAIK, this isn't a thing in the UK. Does anybody have any experience with a parts store that's lent them a similar tool for free?... Read more
Nothing in business is free. It’s recovered somewhere in the deal. Parts cost may be higher. Or maybe your data is used for future sales or sold on to other companies. After all if you have borrowed a “free” tool you will undoubtedly have given address and.ID and quite possibly email, car details and credit card info.
It might still be a good deal but not truly free.
Boring isolation Saturday spent flicking through car ads with Top Gear on as background noise and despite the recent price madness I’m still finding a few cheap cars worth a look.

I wouldn’t go to the main dealer with a simple thing like that. Any half decent indi can maintain a Panda and they’ll find ways to save you money. With simple older cars like this it’s wise to build up a relationship with a good local independent garage for repairs and maintenance. I have an excellent local I use to keep old Terrance the Toyota running and he gets both cars for Mot’s as I trust the main dealer not one jot. They get the Volvo for servicing purely due to the complexity of the thing and for value retention.

Oh at least 10 times. My favourite western if not my favourite film . One of the Dukes best ever. Not watch it? That'll be the day.
