Big trouble with car, bought it a few months ago,had to fit new struts and springs ,then onto front brakes, binding bad on front left,so decided to fit new calipers and discs, and pads on both sides, but now brakes are binding badly,it is vented discs on it,but for some strange reason, cant fit the long pins which calipers slide on,can only fit short ones, and every body says short ones are for solid discs, help driving me nuts, even fitted new caliper carriers but still the same.

Any help to sort out this problem woud be appreciated.... Read more

I reckon you have got the wrong part fitment. Renault are nightmare for making random changes during production. Might need to go to a dealer to establish correct fitment.

Solid discs are 12mm thick and have a 61mm long guide pin. Vented discs are 20mm thick with 72mm guide pin. Obviously calipers are different.

Hi all,
So I narrowed my choice to four SUV’s and have test driven them over the last few days.
Audi Q5, BMW X3, Volvo XC60 and Subaru Forester as my left field choice (I owned one back in 2012 and really liked it)
Out of the ‘premium’ ones the Audi Q5 would be my choice. So now I’m stuck between Audi Q5 and Subaru Forester - I like both of them!Forester comes with 150hp petrol engine whilst if going for Audi would get the 40TDI.
So I can get a brand new Forester top of the range for £37,000 or a bit less. For an Audi Q5 with the spec I want 21/71 plate and under 5000/10,000 miles I’m looking at £43-45,000
Having trouble deciding = help!!! Read more

I had a 2018 40 tdi Q5 and traded it in recently for a 2021 45 tfsi petrol. The latter is quicker and a bit quieter but I have to say that I think the diesel suits the car and the gearbox better. 45 mpg from the diesel and 30 mpg from the petrol which is a big difference. Both lovely refined cars in my experience. Air con condensing unit failed on the diesel at 16,000 which was disappointing but ok other than that.

I’ve had my 2018 Ceed for a month now and even though it is the same level of trim as my previous car, in eight years there have been so many additions of ‘driver conveniences’.

It’s interesting that the manufacturers don’t necessarily follow the good ideas of other manufacturers. When I have driven Renaults the feature where if you squirt the screen wash and there is a few second delay before the last wipe which clears away the inevitable drips from above the screen is not there on the KIA.

Yes, that's useful. But more useful still is when you squirt the screen wash the wipers don't start moving immediately. Viery useful on a dusty screen where using the wipers dry would score it. If the water is there first before the wipers start then this problem doesn't occur.

3 weeks ago the Mrs's Astra started to lose power and became undrivable. She took it to the garage and they diagnosed a blocked EGR and cleaned it out.

It worked ok until last night when the same problem happened. The AA diagnosed it as a PO409 EGR Sensor A Circuit problem, the same as before. ... Read more

I had good results with a VERY clogged Honda Accord system using brake fluid in situ, along with some SS wire with a loop on the end.

Note, however, that on the Honda, at least, the cleaning stuff can leak back into the cylinder(s). If I hadn't thought of this at the last minute and turned it over with the plugs out, I might have damaged it due to hydrolocking....

50 years back there were prediction that by now people would be riding flying cars. That did not happen. In fact, even autonomous driving is not mainstream yet.

In my opinion, unless autonomous driving allows a non driver to independently ride a car, it is somewhat useless. ... Read more

Our laws will have to be amended to permit true autonomous driving. The Johnny Cab from Total Recall(1990) would be great to get inebriated people home safely, or people who can't drive. Yet presently the moment a non driver or over refreshed person steps into the cab they become liable to arrest and prosecution. If you are still deemed to be in charge of the vehicle even when you aren't then what's the point?

Trilogy.

Hi all,

In the last half hour of a 5 hour trip my 2012 diesel Zafira CDTI Ecoflex developed a judder. I managed to drive it to my destination by staying in one gear, maintaining a constant speed and constant slightly high revs.
The fault codes thrown up by the pedal test (I think it's called) are:
0400 ('EGR flow malfunction)
0409 ('EGR Sens A Circ')
0425 ('Catalyst Temp Sens Bank 1')
0100 ('Mass or Vol Air Flow Circ')
I got these code interpretations off migweb.co.uk.
I'm not a mechanic at all so I'd be pleased to have any explanation of what the problem/s is/are likely to be, how much it would cost to fix, and most importantly is this something a mobile mechanic could fix?
Thanks in advance,

As above. It seems to be a knee jerk reaction to change the valve without investigation.

Honda Accord I had for a while recently had a fault code and a shiny new EGR valve which had never R'd any EG because the plumbing was completely soot plugged.

How will batteries cope with this! Read more

Bromptonaut

As pointed out this is mostly bodywork and interior damage caused by freak weather conditions.

If any were BEVs then the batteries are probably salvageable just as the engines might be in the ICE cars affected.

My battery has finally given up after 19 years . Looks like the original as it’s date stamped 02 . Do you think I have any comeback with BMW ? Read more

Engineer Andy

I think the battery may live again . I’ve put it on a low trickle charge and it seems ok . If not , I’ve found a good used one in my garage . The car is a 330 cabrio , manual 5 speed . What’s not to like? It’s a properly built car with quality materials. It’s a low stress motor not like the screamers you get today . Parts are relatively cheap and easy to obtain . Sun shining, roof down . I’ll keep it for a while.

It's ALLLIIIIIVE!
