Mazda 6 Tourer - 2.2d Auto - Cold Start Problem - MechanicalMan
Evening All,

Hope you can help. For the last 3 weeks I am been having issues starting my car from cold.

Here is what happens...

First attempt - nearly catches, then immediately stalls.
Second attempt - just cranks. Doesn’t even catch.
Third/Forth attempt - starts.

This now happens every time I start the car from cold. Once the car has been running and the engine is warm it starts fine. I thought is might be battery related, but I changed it about 2 weeks ago and I still have the issue.

Any thoughts? I was thinking glow plugs or fuel pump. I was thinking injectors, but the car starts fine when warm which is the opposite of what I have read.

Some other bits....
Car has done 86k miles. It was built in 2016.
No engine warning lights
Car has a full service history and had a major service about 4 months ago.
I have a OBD2 reader in case somebody can suggest a parameter I should look at.

Thanks in advance

I run a 3 litre diesel auto of 2016 vintage, here is a few thoughts- Check the battery with a voltmeter, (battery should be good for approx 13v, anything less than 12volts then something is wrong) or get a garage to do a load test. Even new batteries can fail but unlikely. Try using Shell superdiesel for a while, or add a diesel inject cleaner. Try turning the car on but dont start, turn off after about 15 secs, do that two or three times- if it then starts OK it may mean your glow plugs need checking. Check the battery connections- clean and tight, and the battery connection to earth on the bodywork. These can corrode and cause all sorts of weird problems.

Thanks you very much for the reply, comments bellow..

Check the battery with a voltmeter:
Done, all good. It turns over fine, so I am sure it is not a battery issue.

Try using Shell superdiesel for a while, or add a diesel inject cleaner
Done, put £40 of shell diesel in the other day as well as a bottle of injector cleaner in the last 2 fill ups.

Try turning the car on but don't start, turn off after about 15 secs
Done, makes no difference (good idea though). I had it booked into my local garage and he thought it might be glow plugs as well. Unfortunately, it is not.

Check the battery connections
Will do.

I took the MAP sensor out the other day as I had read that this can become full of carbon and cause issues. It was indeed full of carbon, but giving it a good clean has done nothing.

I have also noticed recently that under breaking the engine has a noticeable shudder to it. Can't help but think the 2 are related.

One last thing, I have a OBD2 reader. Are there any parameters I can look at that might give me a clue as to what is going on?

I would run superdiesel for a couple of weeks. It wont clean the system in a few miles, it will take longer. I am no expert with OBDII readers so cant help there. Check the battery connections when you can. You will need a good mechanic to look at the data. Good luck.

There are 3 parameters to be looked at with a cold engine. Firstly, engine coolant temperature should be similar to outside ambient temperature. Secondly, engine cranking speed needs to be around 200-250 rpm. Next is fuel pressure, needs to be a minimum of 180-200 bar. These are basic tests. If these are within spec, then further tests will be needed. It's possible the injectors will need checking.

Update as I hate it when a post doesn't get finished off with a result.

Turns out the issue was a rubber fuel line. A mouse had visited and causes a number of small holes/cuts. So air had been getting in and causing the issues.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

Thanks for the update, it might help someone else if they hit upon this thread when searching. Let's hope the mouse enjoyed its drink for all the aggro it caused...

Air getting into the fuel system most likely.
