<500Miles later;

The IAT popped out of the pipe (The sensor before the elbow of the pipe at the EGR end/The silicon pipe fixed end) Loss of power and after puling over to see what had happened, I really struggled to get the car moving again. Managed to limp it home though for the last couple of mile. ...

Came down from Lincolnshire on the A1, from the slip road off the A1 to getting on the M25 took about two hours....is this normal there or was it just one of those things? Just seemed seemed a series of roundabouts and lights but couldn't see much due to so many lorries blocking everything out. Read more

I wish I could say my recent experience bore this out.

It's a route I know well and usually take when I travel north from here (J8 is a couple of minutes away). Coming south a few weekends ago in the middle of the day on a Sunday the whole journey from Leeds (M62 eastwards, then on to A1M at Ferrybridge) was smooth and quiet until we went across to the M1 for the last few frustrating, crawling 35-or-so miles....

Hi my 59 plate focus has a rough idle when it's been driven a for 20 - 30 minutes, it's fine on start up, it drive fines no hesitation but when it comes to a stop it idles rough, I Googled it and read that it could be the MAF sensor

The air filter is fairly new and I've changed the MAF yesterday and took it for a 10 minute spin to get it warm and it seemed fine. but this morning when I got to work 30 minutes away it was idling rough again, (how I know its after a 20 - 30 minute run) ... Read more

On the 1.8 lynx engine , if the egr is stuck open , you will get lack of performance and very sluggish. On the 1.6 psa engine , a stuck open egr often causes a non start situation.

I see some of the new car makers are shipping cars without satnav as they cannot get enough of the chips. Screen looks the same just doesnt have a Satnav.

Wonder how long this will go on?... Read more

It’s fine using maps on your phone, but I’m not on a contract with unlimited data, so it’s quickly used up

Download your local maps to your phone. It then only needs a much reduced data flow.

Hi folks, car heater output low or non existent and low coolant light comes on some time, top is around half a mug full every 1000 miles or so. I thought it was dodgy heater matrix,- not so. Called RAC - very smart guy poked and prodded around with UV light, could see no obvious leaks - no leaks at bulkhead and no leaks under dashboard, Did a pressure test (5mns), said very small leak evident. Then did a chemical test and said small signs of colour change indicates mixing of water in exhausts, his suggestion a faulty EGR/leaking cooler.

Spoke to local garage suggest retest following system pressure test as pressure test needs to be done for at least 15 mins - £40 to recheck for leaks.... Read more

Back when I was about five or six years old [about 1958] the local bus company operated the Bristol Lodekka. Even then I thought this an amusing name for a double decker bus.

A consultation with Mr Google soon dispelled that misunderstanding but I have a question about the idle of the engine.... Read more

There were no Bristol buses in the Potteries where I grew up and the Daimlers fitted with Gardner engines regularly failed to get up a steep hill on the way to school and we all had to get off and walk up the hill.

No such problem for the horizontally opposed Commer two stroke engines which had masses of power and a lovely thrum similar to a Subaru. Definitely my favourite !...

Hi all, if i lock my car with the fob, the alarm WILL go off, within 5 minutes, it is the 'beep beep beep' of the horn!

Now the horn doesn't work, not when you press the steering wheel, but the horn unit itself DOES work, with infra red steering aid (fitted but removable) so passes MOT etc!... Read more

The Met have run breath testing sessions at London stations in the mornings, showing drinkers that they can still be (a) illegal abd more importantly (b) dangerous the morning after the night before.

I was very lucky on my London commuter days not to be caught that way. ...

Was chatting with a colleague the other day about driving long distances Vs taking the train and possibly hiring a car at the other end then we started talking about the Eurotunnel and how it would be good if it could go to other places not just in the UK but all over Europe, you could bord the train in Manchester with your car to London or different locations maybe with a few changes or go to Frankfurt or Milan etc, load the car up drive to the station on to a train then relax and then arrive at your destination without having to drive hundreds of miles. Thing is could or current infrastructure handle it or would we need all new train lines bridges etc and would it be feasible? Read more

If there is more than one occupant of the car, long distance door to door travel is almost invariably cheaper than by train or plane, especially with high mpg cars. And because the car is already possessed, there are no rental or ownership costs to factor in. Also, my rare experiences in the last decade of long distance train and plane travel (unless business class) have certainly not been examples of strainless peaceful relaxation.
