It could lead to a lot of potential classics going to the scrap yard Read more

Agree if someone can afford a £40K+ vehicle then they can afford the extra VED. But that's not the problem. A car costing just over £40K may be almost half that in 3 years time. For example, someone who can only afford say around £20K to buy a decent used car can then be penalised with the extra VED if the car they are buying was over £40K new. The historic new price of a used car should be completely irrelevant to VED and that's why this is effectively penalising someone who can't afford £40K for a car.

Another new model loaded with too much "Tech" which few people want or need.
It only serves to keep prices and repair costs artificially high. Read more

My last two cars have been Dacia's and so would have been my next until the NEW model arrived and like Skoda the prices are rising the problem with Dacia is their policy 'the price you see is the price you pay'. The problem with that is that many other manufacturers are reducing and discounting their prices. So much so that I have just ordered a brand new Seat Leon SE Dynamic for just over £2000 the list price of the Dacia. The offers are out there you just have to look.

Nice, but really, truthfully, who can afford these £50k cars? Read more

I'm quite disappointed, just back from the scrap yard and only got just shy of four quid for the old (12 kg) battery. However, I did take all my old taps, tap heads, radiator valves and ball-cocks and got thirteen quid for them (4 kg).

I weighed my old 68ah battery (17kg) in earlier this week and got £6.80. I also weighed in a small (1kg) copper tank which was less rewarding at £2.60. Still better than taking to the tip!

Just had a battery change & don’t have the radio code as was not given it when I bought the car. I’m aware I need a serial number to get a code when I press 1 & 6 it goes through a few numbers which are 06-02-06, CDKW8, 05-01-02 then some numbers after SWP. Any of these useful? Read more

Hi,

I need some buying advice please. I'm looking for largish, used family car for around the 8k mark. Up to 6/7 years old. Preferably petrol as making lots of short trips. Mileage up to 60k.... Read more

Why would you choose a 10 year old Octavia when you have an £8k budget?. Not that it is necessarily bad choice, but if you can get a 2017 Astra estate or a 2018 Fiat Tipo estate, why choose something a decade old.

As well a an all-electric range by 2030, Volvo have just issued a press release that they will also be an online only brand at that time. Dealers will still be there for preparing, delivering and servicing cars, but cars will be ordered online. There will be more flesh on the bones with time, but I wonder who will follow? Read more

What baffles me is the number of people that presumably don't want to test drive a car before buying. It's not about dented alloys or faults but do they LIKE how the car drives? Is this not a consideration anymore?

Exactly, which is why I dislike the business models promoted by the likes of Cinch and Cazoom whatever they're called....

Morning,

Have been ringing around a few Hyundai and Kia dealers recently trying to sort out a good deal on a Kona or a Stonic. I am slightly surprised how little leeway there is on prices, especially when mentioning that the buyer will be a cash purchaser. I get that they would prefer finance for their commission, but didn't expect an almost complete lack of interest from some dealers.... Read more

“ Never paid a penny back, in fact some dealers have actually encouraged me to take out the PCP and pay it off as a way of sweetening the deal.” Cash isn’t appealing to dealers, who all receive commissions on any finance products sold, often you’d make more from selling the finance than the car. When I went seeking a used Volvo XC60 recently the local dealer tried his best to get me into a new one via a deal that seen very nearly £10,000 taken from the list price via a PCP in part thanks to a manufacturer subsidised deal. They encouraged me to pay this off within 14 days of taking delivery and I’d enjoy the £3,500 manufacturer subsidy along with the heavy dealer discount. No penalties applied. I still bought used though.

But the C63 was the choice for drivers who admired the music of thundering V8

No accounting for taste. The V8, especially in crossplane form, is a rough unbalanced engine, which accounts for the 'music', unless several bhp are wasted in smoothing and quietening it. But then, some people like Stockhausen. ... Read more

My local small garage recently replaced the drivers side door window mechanism and motor but ever since, the folding door mirrors no longer work either from the switches on the door panel or when the car auto-locks when walking away. The garage did double check the wire connectors are all plugged in. Both the garage and I cannot seem to fathom why this function no longer works. Any ideas anyone? Read more

I would check the fuses first, as you say both mirrors are affected . If they're ok then a wire must have got damaged when the door card was removed. I have not removed a door card on a MK3 but on the MK2 it was tricky.
