I’m wanting to change the standard 15 inch steel wheels on my boxer van, I’ve seen some discovery 18inch alloy wheels that I think may work. I’m wondering a few different things like will the overall weight of the wheel and tyre increase or decrease and will they fit. From my research they will be 14.4mm closer to the suspension and 36.4mm further out with being 2 inches wider. But the tyre widths will stay the same at 215 so guessing that extra wheel size won’t make much difference? The offsets are also slightly different at the steels being 68mm and the alloys being 57mm. Now is this going to effect the van in any major way or be barely noticeable?
Cheers in advance for any help. Read more

Cheers for the reply.
I’m already on modified insurance as the van has been changed to a camper van so that’s not to much of an issue.

I believe the old rims are 4 inch and the new are 6 but both will have 215 tyres on them. I’m currently running 215/70r15 and the new wheels are 215/55r18 although they would need to be replaced anyway. I know what you mean about the lower profile giving a harsher ride although they are Land Rover wheels so still have a large sidewall so hoping this doesn’t effect it to much.

The pcd of the old wheels is 5x118 and the new 5x120 I’ve seen I can get wobble bolts that will take up the 2mm difference don’t know if anyone’s used them before to success. The centre bore of the old i believe is 71.1 and the new 72.5 so should be okay I believe?

All this information is what I’ve found on the internet so hoping it is correct but do correct me if I’m wrong.

Hi,

recent cold weather and reduced use due to the lockdowns finally finished off the battery, which was the original to the car.... Read more

Usual problem on the diesel models , is the debris from the clutch and dmf accumulates on the starter pinion . This causes it not to retract properly and remain engaged to the flywheel. Unlikely to be the ignition switch .

Gents, I'm currently compiling a short list of cars to replace my Mokka, currently on the list are the new Corsa, in Sri spec and a Suzuki Ignis in sz5 spec with 4 wheel drive, whatever I choose will be new rather than used.

Anyone got either car? be interested in your impressions please, there's no rush as I'm not looking to replace the mokka until September. Read more

Not wishing to derail the thread, but I have been surprised to find that some SUVs are almost as big as their apparently bigger estate car cousins. A couple of years ago I was in the market for a new Volvo V60 and while hanging around in the showroom for the salesman to finish whatever he was doing I had a good look over an XC40. It’s shorter than a V60 but runs it a close second for interior space. More recently I also wanted to downsize from a large estate car (incredibly useful workhorses) and came to the view that a mid-size SUV would meet the smaller car requirement without any drastic loss of load-carrying space. I find myself carrying the same sort of loads as you, except a spouse’s artwork.

Odd one here folks I'm hoping has a straightforward answer I simply can't see - like many others I imagine, my car (Seat Ibiza Mk III 2008) has been basically sat on a driveway for a year, so I've had battery issues. I bought a mains-powered trickle charger as a stopgap until it's safe to go out and get it either reconditioned or replaced.

The confusion I have is with my boot light. A few months ago while at the supermarket I noticed it was no longer working, and assumed the bulb had gone. I didn't bother to change it and put it on my list of to-do's for some future point. The other day, though, I happened to notice that it was working again - specifically when the trickle charger was connected.... Read more

My Peugeot is the same age and lapses into Eco mode if it's done nothing for a day or two, and especially if the battery is a bit down.

I'm sure that's true for the normal type of spammer - a chancer trying to advertise their own product or service for free, and failing.

But there's nothing rational about post after post of d*****, all more or less identical. This is some stupid form of software that's got out of control, and it's what our IT people are looking into now,

Due to the pandemic, motor dealers have learnt how to conduct transactions online and allow contactless handovers. For many dealers, online car sales have increased rapidly over the period, becoming an essential tool. We want to know how you feel about these changes:

My daughter passed her driving test around 5 years ago, and although occasionally driving her boyfriend's SUV she has never had her own car.

She now wants to buy a 'first' car - around £4.5k - and has enlisted my help. I have worked on plenty of cars over the years; clutches, timing belts, even a couple of full engine rebuilds. But I'm a bit rusty now (owned Toyotas for the past 15 years and they've never needed more than routine servicing and pads/discs).... Read more

A couple of questions regarding MOT fine. Yes I made the mistake of letting my car run out of MOT by I believe 11 days. It was right on top of Xmas, stress levels very high, 2 kids, finding out I was pregnant, I totally forgot. I was driving and got pulled over by the police, who said it was overdue etc. Some people have said I was lucky as it can get towed away etc. But the police just said, don’t worry you may only get a warning, if not £100 fine.
I wasn’t naive I was fully expecting the £100 fine within 28 days which I got a few days ago. Was my own fault so no issue. Will admit I was a little bit hoping I would only get a warning and the lockdown, 11 days overdue etc would be in my favour. No I got the fine.
My question is who decides the fine/warning, how is it decided? What factors are looked at. I had a friend who went 5 months over without an MOT yet she got away with just a warning????seems bizarre that I was 11 days over and got a fine, and she got away with it???.
I have no offences, no tickets etc so it can’t be decided on that basis??? Can anyone shed any light into what happened. Quite frustrating when you look at it.
Also is it worth appealing with the above argument?? Or should I just bite the bullet and pay it? Like I say it’s totally my own fault Read more

The length of time MOT has expired will decide what action generally.

Typically people bought diesels for following reasons:

1. High torque at low RPM. Modern turbo diesels have similar kind of torque. So this is no longer a diesel only feature.

2. Better mileage. Now with pandemic 5 days long commute every day is not coming back. So need for long commute will be much less. More so, when people are not commuting long, especially the situation now, car will be used for short journeys which is bad for DPF.

So why one would go for diesel - unless having specific needs like large 4x4 in farms etc.? Read more
