whats your opinion on the early 2004 V40 1.8 petrol ?...
My engine revs to 6500 rpm but maximum power and torque are both reached at about 4000 rpm. Above that the power curve is more or less flat but the torque drops off quite fast. To maximise acceleration through the gears would you change up at 4000 or 6500 rpm?
<< This is why, in order to have fun and enjoy driving, you need a small light city car. >>
Maybe that explains the steady rise in prices for the trickle of 205 GTIs emerging from barns everywhere ? All those cars came in at under a ton (weight, that is).
The only info I have mate is that in the article, I do not have my own car so its not an issue for me.
I understood the article you linked to which relates to BPA regulated parking operators. ...
Does anyone have any advice for me? I bought a used car for £2000.Seat Ibiza 1.4 diesel ecomotive. 3 months to the day later I was on the motorway and the oil light came on with a warning Alarm. I new this must be serious but was unable to pull over immediately due to road works and no hard shoulder plus heavy traffic on a dangerous spot of road. I pulled over within a couple of minutes just as the car went into safe mode. It transpired that there had been a lack of oil pressure for to (most likely oil pump failure). Because I was unable to stop straight away this caused catastrophic engine issues with big end bearings going meaning a probable engine rebuild or replacement engine. I am currently taking to ombudsman as dealer and finance company are saying tough, you were unlucky. Did anyone know under trading standards whether oil pump failure would be down to dealer to sort, or if they should hold some kind of responsibility? Read more
I think you have been unlucky, and agree that the legal fees of getting them to admit liability will be far too much, I have always said if a deal looks too good to be true then it usually is, especially with cars.
It is standard that if you break down in roadworks then you will get free recovery, the engine warning light means fatal damage if you continue to drive so they would have a good case for defence if you continued to do it after the light came on....
Yet again the public are being conned into thinking these hybrids are as economical as they are green. Most of the WLTP tests are carried out on a full charge so after the 35 mile electric charge has run out you will be driving on the 1.5 litre petrol engine ,so the mpg figures they quote will be way out. , very green. I have been running my (new to me) 1.4 Golf on VPower to give it a good clean out. Wow it is extremely expensive these days. So far I have had one reward of £1.40. The official reward rate is £3 for every 300 litres, i.e. a penny a litre, so I wonder how HJ gets the £12 a month he has been quoting recently. Has he become a taxi driver?
Also the new system might work well on a Smartphone, which I don't have. Instead, on my iPad , it's very clunky with the need to login to activate the rewards. Even having done that the reward wasn't applied so I contacted the helpdesk. They said it doesn't work with all browsers! Mine is Google. They suggested I change it. For a whopping penny a litre? They are having a laugh.
I will be going back to my local Budgens BP for my next fill with a straight 3p a litre discount (5p I think for their premium fuel). It's applied immediately at the point of sale with just the need to show a local loyalty card. Simple.

After using Shell Regular Unleaded Petrol almost exclusively in my 3 cylinder 1 litre T-GDI 5 door Hatchback for nearly 3 years now I have recently noticed a marked reduction in the level of 'Reward' received from Shell. I used to receive £2.50 after every 10 purchases of fuel but I have just received an e-mail advising me of a derisory £1.40 'Reward' after my tenth (actually my eleventh) purchase of fuel totalling 346 litres over a period of around 4 months at an average price of around £1.25 per litre - this represents barely one free litre of fuel per 346 litres purchased. However Shell also proudly advise me that they have or will offset all the carbon my driving has generated at an estimated cost to Shell of £4.16. Furthermore - a purchase of 46 litres, made on 21st December did not get registered as a valid contributory purchase because whilst the Shell Go+ card was scanned and 'beeped in' by the cashier I did not receive the customary e-mail - as this was in fact the tenth purchase and on inspecting my receipt later the next day, it was clear that the Shell Go+ Card had not registered as the receipt had a message at the foot telling me I should join Shell Go + to benefit from their 'valuable reward scheme'.
I have now written 3 e-mails to the Shell Customer care team with details of this registration failure since the first email sent on 22nd December 2019 but to date have received no acknowledgement of my complaint....
EML on my Corsa came on 4 years ago. My Indy mechanic said to ignore it as it would still pass the MOT. In May 2019 I had to get it fixed to comply with new MOT requirements. Mechanic put it on the scanner and replaced the 02 sensor. 2 days later it failed the MOT when the EML came on way to test centre (N Ireland). Same mechanic replaced another sensor for £95. Car passed MOT. EML came on again 2 months later.
Last November, I replaced the battery in both key fobs as they were the original batteries and the keys needed several presses to lock and unlock - EML has been off ever since!! A £3 fix! Read more
Complete fluke . The car will run perfectly without batteries in the remote .
Is it worth upgrading to halogen bulbs and are there any problems in doing that? Read more
I was originally going to use Osram.
Hi again,
Another probably basic question but when checking engine OIL can I use kitchen roll tissue to wipe the dipstick?... Read more
I occasionally use my finger, and transfer the residue to the bonnet locking mechanism.
Old engine oil can be carcinogenic - probably OK with drip or two though....
Thanks Badbusdriver - I'll run your choices by daughter and see what she thinks.
I'll be sure to come back when a purchase is made and let you all know what we went with just to wrap these threads to completion
