Very interesting, the CLK is a good-looking car in both coupe and cabrio versions, and under £4K is a very good price. I hope you have many years of trouble-free ownership.

Apart from what are clearly commuter machines - low miles in and out of cities etc, I just don't see the point in a large electric motorcycle. You fill it up, you know that it will get you X miles to where you are going, and there will be a filling station to fill it and get you another X miles.

When travelling in Europe I knew to the mile that after filling up in Adinkerke in Belgium when the fuel reserve light would come on, about 5 miles from home in the UK after 240 miles travelled....

Looking for some advice on what to do with my corsa. It broke down the other day. Timing chain gone and likely engine damage as a result. It’s 6 years old with 80k miles so not worth much now. Not sure it’s worth getting fixed or engine replaced but wanting to know what I might get for selling it as a non runner? Or how much it’s likely to be to fix and if it’s worth it. Any advice would be appreciate.

Replacement engine prob £5-600 used; same again to fit it if you can't DIY. Values on Autotrader around £2.5k, depends on engine / spec / condition. That would suggests its spares or repair value is about a grand. If you can source an engine and someone to fit it, and it's otherwise OK, then it's probably worth fixing. If you can't or you desperately need wheels, then buy something else, and stick it on e-bay SorR and see what it fetches.

Since I don’t have time to resolve the suspected bearing failure (which may not be possible anyway) before leaving for the witer vacation, I’m stripping cleaning and re-installing the brakes.

Most of the heat is coming from here, though they may not be the underlying cause.... Read more

Software seems comparatively limited and a bit flakey.

Like the W10 updates, last one messed up my Laptops charging, discovered last night the update had a charging eco mode to assist battery life,(according to HP) it slowed charging to allow for extended battery life...

BBD and SLO's recommendations are, as usual, spot on. My own Mazda3 1.6 petrol just passed its 11th MOT in a row (no failures since new, touch wood), so I can vouch for the car's reliability. Still drives very well for a 14yo car.

Hi all, I’m hoping that you clever lot will be able to help me with an issue I have run into with my VW Polo 1.4 TDI 2014 79k miles.

To cut a long story short, after an issue with the car we have discovered that the dual mass flywheel is smashed to pieces. The clutch itself shows little/no signs of wear. We have tried to source a dual mass flywheel and other relevant parts from various motorfactors but to no avail. Biting the bullet we contacted a local VW franchise to get a quote for the parts only to be told that VW don’t produce the parts required. This is because they now manufacture an ‘updated part’ (as they called it) which consists of a conversion to a single mass flywheel. When I enquired as to why the part was updated I got a very cagey response along the lines of ‘oh sometimes we might update parts if we think, for example, they are more efficient than the original part’.

This leaves us stuck between a rock and a hard place with it appearing that we have no choice but to send the car back to VW for the ‘updated part’ to be fitted with a bill in the region of £1,200.

My question is can manufacturers just try and hide behind saying a part has been ‘updated’ thereby us having to foot the bill? My view is that this isn’t just an ‘update’ of a part; changing from
DMF to SMF is not just a slight update it is completely different. Would this suggest that the original system was not fit for purpose? Particularly in light of the fact that VW simply don’t manufacture the original part any longer.

I would love to know your views as to where we stand. Thanks in advance for any help.

They are right, cars get updated all the time, when you buy an old car you always run the chance that parts might not be available, as such even a small repair that requires parts can bea nightmare or lead to the car being beyond economical repair.

Try scrap yards for the spare parts and then get a garage to fit it that will only charge for labour....

All good advice above . Also , if the car has no dipstick I would suggest you read the procedure for topping up and level checking in the handbook. Running the engine with the oil cap not refitted correctly can cause the engine fault light to illuminate.

Thoroughly impressed with this magnificent engine.
But understand that the hey days were up to 2004 before which solenoid injectors were fitted.
Then piezo injectors from 2005 which were more troublesome.
Culminating in the 2007 mods which resulted in some engines destroying themselves.
Was this cost cutting or in search of cleaner emissions.

Yes, I'm sure that the early PDs were among the most robust and reliable diesel engines around, but don't forget they were univerally panned for noise, vibration and harshness at the time, together with a very narrow power band which only gave you a massive wave of torque between 2000 and 3500 RPM and after that it felt like someone had deployed a parachute from the back bumper!

That post brings back some rather bad memories....
