Hi all - firstly I am a car idiot so apologies for that. I have searched for an answer but cannot find anything

I have a 308 SW which has always had a tow bar fitted, which I've never used. I'm now thinking it maybe good to use it for a bike rack, however I cannot find an electric harness for it. Is it possible the car has a tow bar without the option of electrics? I've looked under the car but don't really know where to look and can't find anything in the manual... Read more

Maybe an earlier owner used it for a rack which didn't obscure any lights or the reg.plate (if that is possible) ?

On the car,it'll be stamped into the floorpan in front of driver's seat-and,dependent on age of vehicle,at bottom of screen on nearside.

I’ve owned the car for 3.5 years now and haven’t faced any major technicals issues. My car was part of the emissions scandal and was recalled for a software update. After retrieving from the garage the car has displayed intermittent engine issues every 300 miles roughly where for a period of time the car displays the 5 following faults - high idling around 950, normally 750 ish. Rough transitioning when changing gear, almost sounds as though it’s misfiring. Stop start system stops working. Car jolts excessively when driving between 15-30 mph in 2nd and 3rd, you have to increase acceleration to prevent this. Cooling fan will always come on when the car is switched off. This fault has become more prominent and happens every 50 miles or so - It’s quite unpleasant to drive. Even though I know the issues, I haven’t taken to the garage as I’m hoping someone has an idea on what’s happening. It’s worth mentioning that I take regular long journeys too. Thanks in advance. I'm afraid the sad fact is that however good we might think modern diesels are they are still dirty old oil burners. Advancements such as common rail technology which has allowed a return to direct injection, and ECM control have improved matters, but the DPF and EGR system only paper over the cracks. Neither solve the emissions issue at source. In fact nothing will where diesel engines are concerned. I don't think we'll ever see a diesel engine, or engine management system that really solves the diesel emission problem.

Could do with some suggestions please: my Civic windscreen smears every time the wipers pass, despite brand new wipers on a screen I've tried everything on to shift it. It's a serious hazard at night. I've tried alcohol (pure 96), glass cleaner, vinegar and rolled up newspaper, autoglym glass cleaner, all to no avail and I'm running out of ideas. I've heard a clay bar might help, but not sure how to use, I'm tempted to try hydrochloric acid wash, as I have some. Any ideas most welcome! Read more

I do 30K a year as a driving instructor and my screen smears are awful. It doesnt make a differnce how new the blades are. All the cleaners I've used inc pricey Autoglym make the glass look lovely but as soon as the slightest bit of wet gets on the screen it smears as if it is waxy or oily. The smears vanish very quickly but reappear with the next wiper sweep. A cure for this use a green pan scourer thing, sprinkle household vinegar on the screen and scrub it with the scourer. Result - perfectly clean screen when using wipers

Does anyone know what the purpose of the 12 foot high wooden panels that are being erected along some sections of smart motorway conversions is ?

They give me the feeling of 'nowhere to run' in the event of a breakdown ! Perhaps their purpose is to stop people trying to climb over them /... Read more

Whilst board at work stuck in traffic I was wondering why cars don't have the green amber and red (I know they have red) on the rev counter like most heavy commercial vehicles. All lorries, buses and some Van's (old IVECO) have this and it's good indication of where peek power and torque are in the rev range and where most economical keep the revs.

Tachometer helps but for years in Mini (the sort Issigonis designed) and other cars I judged it by ear.

Rev it 'till you hear the valves bouncing, then change up. ;)

One for the technowizards on the forum. In the past three months my junk mail box has been receiving up to 50 unwanted e mails per day. They range from messages from every supermarket company offering me free something but always a link to follow. I am aware of those dangers so don't respond. Also about meeting 'Lovely Russian Women' ( is there any such animal?) Medicines with bogus claims etc etc. You get the picture. In short is it possible to block them from my account altogether? I am fed up with deleting them every day. Comments please. Cheers Concrete Read more

I know - that's what I meant - with Currys/PC World, their system was hacked and the hackers got a list of email addresses and the people's names and details, maybe not the passwords and any credit card details held for the account with the company (as these were likely encripted) - most cyber criminals just want the email address and name of the account holder so they can spam or phish them successfully to get the password, etc without needing to crack a load of encripted files.

I suspect these criminals use the email equivalent of a telephone 'autodialer' on email addresses, thus if yours is not a proper name, even with a number at the end, you can easily get included on a spammer's list. Handy if you have an usual name.

Hello.

Do any of you own a Mk 2 cmax (petrol engine) from about 2014 onwards. If so what is front tyre wear like? A friend is selling his and told me it just had 2 new front tyres and pads at 15,000 miles which seems a bit premature to me. Read more

Probably a combination of both, providing extra shock absorbtion, and why the suspension should last longer as well.
