I'm thinking of buying a Ford Focus automatic (broken leg means I can't drive manual any more). The one I'm taken by has an engine management warning light on. Should I steer very clear? My son's focus has had this and it was the speed sensor. The trade seller says he thinks it's the Lamda sensor. I have been buying cheap motors all my (long) life but modern engines do bamboozle me. Any thoughts? Read more

Thank you lovely, sensible people.

Just returned from holiday to Andorra & week trolling round France. 2004 x type diesel, 2400 miles, 55 mpg, used no oil, now done 163,000 miles. Temp gauge mostly at 1/4, got up to 1/2 climbing the Pyrenees in 34 deg outside temp. Pretty pleased with a car that is worth effectively £1k-zero. Did notice that after many miles of gentle cruising (even at 130 km/h) changing down and heavy throttle produced big black smoke from exhaust. Have learned to use this 'James Bond' style against tail-gaters. Wondered about using 'stop smoke' additives but undecided so far. (Diesel in Andorra 87c, France supermarkets 1.07 euros, French autoroutes 1.27 for excellum).

Yesterday son called round with his 1yo Sandero. Had picked up twisted/bent 4" nail in r/o/s tyre. He borrowed my car overnight and this morning took his to local trusted tyre indy. (No warning light from TPMS). They pulled nail out. It had gone horizontally (IYSWIM) through the (plenty of) tyre tread, no puncture, no air loss. They advised no need to change tyre. I trust these guys, and perhaps in a high performance car it might make sense to change the tyre but in the real (i.e. cash-strapped) world it seems reasonable to carry on and just keep an eye on the tyre. Does anyone know why there would be oil coming from (looks to be coming from) the inlet manifold. Been like this for a while and I have not took anything apart to look yet as it only looses about 2 drops a day but always wondered why it would be from this area. Any advise would be greatly appreciated. Read more

You need to have the engine cleaned before you can be sure where it is comming from. My guess would be cam cover onto the inlet manifold.

And people wonder why their warranty claims have been rejected

I've noticed this in other cars but given this new C3 has electric windows in the rear I'm surprised that it's so easy for a passenger to leave a window open and me not notice and there's no alarm ... warnings for everything else go off constantly but not this most important thing ... am I missing something ? Nice to see all the interest, just to confirm the key fob trick doesn't work in the C3 Picasso (66) sadly.

I have lived in NW France for seven years. The French are proud of Paris as it is their capital - but very few want to go there unless they have to.

The average French people regard Parisians as arrogant and snooty, if you park your Parisian registered car in some small french towns you are liable to have it keyed and the wipers tied in a knot - or worse.

I kind of thought that, probs easier just to get an ecu and key set complete I'd think then.

Hi John

Would you choose the new Clio 120 TCe with 6 gears over the 208 Puretech 110 with 5 gears?... Read more

I have the 1.2 110 with the EAT6 automatic gearbox (the proper TC not the automated manual !) and it is a very good combination. I did not drive a manual so can't comment specifically on them, however I do know from previous owned Peugeots that the 5 speed is a bit "clunky" whereas the 6 speed is a very smooth changing box. I have an Allure and it has manual heater controls, I would not want them on the touchscreen.
