But have you taken into account the falling value of the pound verses the dollar which is how we buy fuel? Read more
Hi, I'm not sure if this has been asked before? If so I apologise. I have a 52 plate Zafira 1.8 auto which I rarely use so when I do use it the battery is usually dead, but after a recharge it'll start first turn of the key, here's the but every time weird things happen with the indicator lights on the gear change console and the dash also it'll go into safe mode (although I can manually change gear no problem) after running around for a while and a few ignition off and ons the lights on the gear change console sort there selves out and it starts running as normal but the Traction Control (car skidding in a triangle) and the Engine Electronics (car with a spanner on top) stay on. This has been happing for years. I brought the car when it was 6 months old but unfortunately I had an accident at work which has left me disabled hence the reason I don't use it much. Last time I had the oil changed the chap that did it brought a diagnostic scanner with him and reset the lights, this time I thought I'd buy a scanner and do the job myself. What I need to know is is my car OBD or OBD 2? I've lost his phone number so I can't ask him. Any help would be appreciated, thanks in advance. Trev. Read more

Check your valve timing and cambelt tension to make they're spot on. Use the correct locking tool to lock the crankshaft, and then make sure the locking pin for the camshaft slides in easily. If it doesn't then the timing is out, and this will cause poor starting. Also using VCDS check the 'Torsion' figure in 'Measuring Blocks'. This figure should be as close to '0' as possible with the engine running. The further away from '0' either '+' or '-' the Torsion figure is, the more the ECM will have to make corrections to the injection timing. Eventually a fault code will be set if it's too far out, but even a small error will affect starting. It's very important that the base timing is correct. The ECM can only adjust the timing once an engine speed signal is received from the crankshaft sensor. Diesel injection timing doesn't need to be far out to give you problems.
Annual insurance renewal - existing insurer's premium quote increased from £220 to £330 (9yr+ no claims).
So ... time to look for alternative quotes and checked some insurers' websites and used comparison sites. So far so good ... but one of my criteria for choosing a suitable insurer is that the cover includes holiday travel to EU three or four times a year and don't want to pay an additional premium for every trip.
Bottom line ... it's very difficult to find any sites that give the option of entering inclusive EU cover as an option. I have to draw up a short-list of potential insurers and then contact them and enquire directly - even the company websites often don't make the information easy to find.
My search for an alternative insurer now has a satisfactory outcome (!) ... but I'm sure I'm not the only one facing this challenge ... are there any comparison sites which include the option to find companies which offer inclusive EU cover?

Thank you for your comments Warning ... I think the insurers who do NOT automatically quote a steep increase in premium year on year, despite no claims having been made, are very much the exception rather than the norm!
However, my issue is not with the quoted premium increase (I negotiated it down to a small reduction in premium last year, and this year have found another insurer at a very competitive rate) .... my query as you will see from the thread heading is not with increased insurance premiums per se, but with the difficulty in finding out which companies do not make additional charges for maintaining full comprehensive cover when travelling on holiday to the EU. I left DL quite a few years ago because I was paying them an additional £100 per year for 2 weeks travel to France a few times a year - but their website doesn't make this clear (nor are they an exception).
When you see TV footage of the 1000s of drivers queuing to pass through Dover last weekend (and that after the Brexit vote!), I'm sure there must be a market for a comparison site which gives the option of cover for EU travel being included in the annual premium.
Got caught - Sunday morning - semi rural road - 30 limit - got pinged at 37mph. Notice of Intended Prosecution itemised 'CHRISTCHURCH ROAD, EPSOM. Failed to find it on Google Maps! But there is a 'CHRIST CHURCH ROAD'. Is this technicality enough to negate the summons? Read more
I am with Rob JP.
So you wish to contest the FPN and advise them accordingly.
Their next step is to take the matter to Court where the defect may or may not
be rectified on the summons.
If not the Court will not consider a major defect and convict and as said may add a bit more through fine and Court costs.

Hi everyone
I currently have a Citroen Xsara Piasso Exclusiv 2002. It has served me very well for the last five years. I can't make up my mind what to choose next. I have £5K, will take mileage up to 100K.
Things I like about the CXP that are important to me and influence the next car I buy are:
- The low windows in the back means my children get a good view out and motion sickness has all but disappeared - very important as they used to hurl everywhere.
- I live in a town, Lewes, where parking is hard and the short length of the Picasso - 4.2M - is helpful
- The engine size - the car is 95% used for tootling around town, so I don't need a 2 litre engine, 1.6-1.9 is fine.
- The boot: I do a lot of diy, so being able to drop the rear seats to get a decent boot space in which to put timber etc is useful.
- Character - it's not a dull car to look at or be in.
- The headroom - CXPs have great headroom. Not vital but when combined with the full length sunroof, gives a tremendous feeling of space in the cabin.
Cars I have considered:
Passat Estate and Audi A4 (too long)
Audi A3 - too small in the back for the children
Focus - not sure - they seem a little characterless. Perhaps a high spec one with leather interior?
Any advice as to what I could go look at? I'm no expert on cars, so forgive my lack of encyclopedic knowledge. I don't actually know what I should be typing in to the Autotrader search box...
Thanks in advance.

I'll take a look at those - thanks.
The car has had no problems in 5 years. Travelling at 70MPH on the motorway, I noticed the car was slowing. The car lost all power and came to a halt on the hard shoulder. There had been no warning of any issues and I had just accelerated to motorway speed from a junction. If I have low tyre pressure, the dash goes red to warn me, but when the engine dies, nothing.
The ignition lights were bright but turning the key did nothing. No dimming of the lights to indicate low battery and no cranking of the engine. I had to have the car recovered and taken to my local MB garage. After 3 days they still can't identify a fault. The said the starter motor was not able to spin fast enough, but I was sceptical and sure enough replacing it didn't resolve anything.
Has anyone suffered any similar issues with a bluemotion diesel?

Had exactly the same thing with my 2010 cdi 350. Fortunately was driving along at 30mph and was able to pull over safely. Guy managed to fix it without removing the turbo but it is a pig of a job, £200 for parts + £230 for fitting. As Fred says, slightest sign of an oil leak from the front seal on the turbo, get it seen to. Really bad design.
Hi,
Last couple of days I've been smelling diesel through the fans when stationary and low speed.
I had the injector seals replaced last year there doesn't seem to be as much fuel this time. The leak seems to be coming from the small fuel pipe into the top of the inject, the one with the little metal clip on. It's on injector two so has a join in it.
It's this easy to replace, I'm not even sure what it's called, part of the fuel rail I guess and probably comes with all the other pipes. Read more
You will need to get the inlet manifold off to get access to them, there is not a lot of room to change them even when its off

Be warned that EOBD and OBDII whilst similar are not identical-make sure whatever you get is EOBD compliant.
