Our Citroen C5 diesel (2008 estate) is stalling regularly when idling (or when slowing to a stop). It's been in to the garage 3 times, and we've had the AA once - we've spent almost £3,000 so far (!!!) and the fault is still there.

So far:

Garage 1, Visit 1: fitted 4 new fuel injectors and serviced the car.

Two days later, an engine warning light came on and the car started stalling again.

Garage 1, Visit 2: replaced the EGR valve and checked the engine fuel recycling system. There was also a fault on the air flow system which was repaired.

A few days later we were driving to an event in the East Midlands and the fault started again. We called the AA out and the mechanic suggested that it could be the fuel pressure valve. (No warning lights but the revs were fluctuating wildly when idling.)

Garage 2, Visit 3: removed and tested the high pressure fuel pump (it was ok). The car seemed to be driving ok again so they returned it to us.

The fault has, however, returned again. Generally it has been ok to drive as it's stalled when we've been slowing to a stop anyway - but in a couple of recent incidents, it has stalled as I've pulled onto a large fast-moving roundabout and onto a dual carriageway. I'm driving with a small child so it is worrying.

Any ideas, anyone? Read more

I'm helping a relative look for a newer car and one of their main requirements is to have a torque converter automatic.

Taking the following into account what cars should be considered.:-

Budget: £8,000
Age: Up to 3 years old
Size: Nissan Note/Ford Focus Size
Engine Size 1.6

No probs here either, Firefox/Adblock, password and name remembered.
Usefully you can now start a new sentence on the next line, where before if you did so would get a space line between automatically.

My only bugbear is when the system times you out half way through typing a long post, i have trained myself to copying any posts i make or otherwise you risk losing everything if you just press send without checking you are still logged on, infuriating when it happens.

Hi,

This question may have been answered earlier, but I haven't been able to find a specific answer, so apologies if the question is repetitive.

A personal loan is much cheaper than a car finance organised by the dealer or manufacturer when buying a used car.

However, I was told by the salesman that a car finance from the manufacturer or car dealer is better, and the argument was that if for some reason the car was to be written - off or stolen, then the car is secured against the loan.

Whereas in the case of a personal loan, I would still have to pay back the personal loan, as the bank doesn't care what happened to the car, or for what purpose I used the loan for that matter.

I wasn't certain I understood this correctly. Car being secured against the loan -> does this mean if the car were stolen, the finance company would consider that and write off my loan, meaning I wouldn't have to pay it all back?

Is this true? What is the advantage of the car finance over a personal loan ? Are there any other things to be considered here ?

What are the disadvantages of taking a pesonal loan and paying the full price upfront before taking the car home ?

Would appreciate thoughts and suggestions.

Cheers,
O_Relly.

I was "sold" gap insurance when buying nearly new three years ago. I didn't need to claim-but I suppose it was a sensible "add on". Always at the back of my mind tho' was the likely hassle of having to make the actual claim, liaising with all concerned -insurance companies/dealers/gap folk........but oh well, thats life!

Son hired a car in France for a couple of days while he went to one of the euro matches in Ma***illes. Came back and a few days later got a postal parking fine for 17 euros - annoying but fair do's. No indication of parking restrictions in the street concerned and tons of others parked there. Might be something to do with how he was parked (parallel).

Over a month later get notice from Avis they have taken 35 euros from his credit card for admin costs in relation to this fine, no appeal possible, presumably they just
gave out his name and address. How they can justify that is beyond me, remind me to cross Avis off my list of hire companies.

My son seems to have crossed France off his list of holiday destinations. Read more

"Don't ever rent at an airport;take the coach into town and rent there."

Unhelpful generalisation; I've had excellent deals both at the airport and also locally near my hotel. It pays to do your homework and pay in advance - and to avoid brokers and deal with the rental companies direct.

Refuse excess insurance at the point of hire, but ensure you have taken out excess insurance before you leave home.

Long story short - I ended up buying a flood damaged 3 month old F Type which did not have a Jaguar warranty (invalidated by the flood damage).
Trader I bought it from knew of the Insurance history of the car (he bought it from auction which stated that it was part of a fleet flood damage claim) - but forgot to mention this in his advert/dealings etc. He now says that he never knew about the lack of warranty (doesn't even accept that he bought it from auction although I have a copy of the invoice from that sale!) and to be fair the auction literature didn't mention this despite the Insurance company knowing this before they advertised it!!
I am based in Hull and legal action is pending but wondered if anyone has any positive feedback with any specific solicitors that have clearly dealt with the consumers rights act etc. Ultimately I think that it is an open and shut case as can prove he knew about the insurance history and the car being flooded etc and, even if he wasn't told about the warranty issue, he is still responsible for what he sells being as he advertised ie "comes with full UK Jaguar warranty" as per Autotrader advert.

I understand this fact but there is something wrong with the whole system if the institutions we trust to protect the consumer re the correct and prompt classification of damaged cars on their register can ignore this register where it suits them and thereby get more money from miss selling what may be a potentially dangerous car.

How many more cars might they (and other Insurance companies) have resold when 'normally' they would be classified as total losses due to flood damage.
How many of the other 18 cars that were part of this fleet claim should have been sold as scrap/spares as opposed to being sold at auction as their own and meaningless cat X?

If any one is injured as a result of using such cars on the road then i am certain that the Allianz will have some legal responsiblity as it they and their agents who allowed this car to be sold and used on the road

Need advice please.

History for background information.

Bought Altea from car giant in 2014 with 15000 miles and full Seat service history, I was told that the car was a disability vehicle.

Very happy with car with no problems.

I purchased a service plan from Seat for a two year service at a cost of £20 a month for 18months payment that would include a minor and major service and two year aa cover. Again very happy with the offer.

The car was perfect and I took it for its first service and that was fine.

The problems

In May 2016 it was due a service and at the same time I started getting the orange coil flashing and the engine warning light.
I took it in for its 2nd service and was advised that the egr needed replacement at a cost of 1700£.

I contacted seat customer service and they offered goodwill where I paid £100. But this took a full month of negotiations leaving me without a car.

14th July 2016 I get the error of a flashing gear number alternating with the spanner symbol. I called the seat service dealer who advised that it's either the service is due on the gearbox or there is a malfunction.

Contacted Seat customer service who advised that I must take the car in for diagnostic. The car has 34000 miles on the clock with full Seat dealer service.

The diagnosis is that the mechatronic unit has failed causing some metal fillings to be present in the magnets of the gearbox.

Cost of repair is £6000 for a new gearbox.

Seat customer service has offered 50% goodwill.

I have tried to explain that this gearbox has a known issue and that vw has issued recall of this 7 speed dsg dq200 gearbox that had a fault with the wrong oil being put into it from manufacturer which causes the mechatronic unit to fail causing full failure of the gearbox.

The car is out of the 3 year warranty but not of the 60000 miles and the gearbox is due service at 40000.

I have refused the seat customer service offering of 50% goodwill and advised for them to cover all costs of the fault.

Can anyone help with advice on the next stage I can take to get this resolved?

I feel let down by the faults that have occurred and now I am thinking that I may take the legal route.

Any advice would be appreciated.

The car is with the dealer. I am now waiting for an email from customer service ref the goodwill offer.

Thank you for your help sorry it's a long post. Read more

But for Kia/Hyundai (and now Toyota) a five year old car is still under manufacturer's warranty, so should cover 100%.

Those manufacturers do indeed offer 5 year warranties but don't think for one minute they are free. The manufacturers charge extra for them but its included in the price of the car....

I would quite like an automatic car. The Kia Venga meets most of my needs.

The older models have a TC 4 gear auto and the newer ones a 6 gear DSG. I am read many negative comments about VAG DSG but wonder if the KIA transmission is better. My mileage is average, around 10,000 so MPG not a big issue.... Read more

Additional good advice appreciated. I will say what I eventually buy.
I am in the fortunate position of wanting to change but not having to change - have already paid for expensive items in C30. Unfortunately, having experienced its seats and cabin I am looking for something equivalent in comfort - I accept different in how it is achieved.

As an aside to lack of "belief" or courtesy or even potential spam, in view of the warnings about liability of the site, Is not HJ when he replies in ask Hj that a car hire firm in sicily are "mafia" or a uk garage are "scum" both recent questions.

HJ's replies to Ask HJ queries are nothing to do with me as moderator, so I can only comment from a personal point of view.

I can't see the Sicilian hire car query, but on the faulty 1-series I agree with Rob - there is no risk of liability for defamation. No dealer is mentioned by name, and JH is merely generalising about dealers who ignore the following provision of CRA 2015 (as summarised by HJ):

A clause in the law known as "early right to reject" specifies that any fault found within 30 days of buying a product entitles the buyer to a full refund. After that period, but within six months, the seller or manufacturer has one opportunity to replace or repair. If that fails, the customer is then entitled to a full or part-refund.
