Two paragraphs from the blurb -

"Advanced driver assistance systems and ‘self-driving’ technologies will transform travel helping deliver safer, smoother and smarter road journeys"

"The driver’s insurer will still pay out in the normal way so road accident victims are promptly reimbursed – but the insurer will then be able to claim the money back from the car company if the vehicle is deemed to be at fault"

I'm not too confident about all this enthusiasm about driverless cars - the biggest snag as far as I can see would be that they have to share the roads with the cars that have unpredictable human drivers, and cope with their various antics, as we do now.

Hmmm,

The government etc will be out of pocket then, as all the money making sorry -safety cameras will be redundant, surely they are aware. I wonder how they will slow down this particular future development?...

Hello

Some of you may have seen my old post on my dying VW Polo I am looking to sell it on as parts. Its a mint car and everything is functioning apart from the engine valve.

However I need another car. I am 20 years young and do a 50 mile trip to work daily. My insurance is currently £1700.

I have been looking at a Toyota Yaris 2006 - 2010 my budget is £2000. Should I buy a 1.0 or 1.3? And what are the common faults because I don't want another misfiring problem.

What other cars are there, I feel insecure buying anything French or a Vauxhall, are Corsa D's any better? How abouts a Fiat Grande Punto?

I've also been looking at 1.25 Fiestas circa 2006. What are their common problems?

Please help, cheers. Read more

That's a good recommendation Avant but I understand that some of the Japanese paint and component manufacturers that set up in Europe to supply the car companies were abandoned for locally sourced products, some of which did not meet the same high standards.
Take for example the Honda handbrake levers which were source locally and failed when they were applied.
Also the modern Yaris auto boxes and Dpfs have been troublesome.

I noticed yesterday that the heater light on the dashboard stayed on after engine starts, though went off when engine was off. What could be wrong? Read more

First suspect is a shorted glow plug.

The kids have all but left home. The trusty old Toyota Avensis verso has killed it's water pump and drive belt plus maybe a few other things. even if it gets fixed it's going as we don't need a seven seater junk carrier.

The wife has said now you can buy a car you want...but it has to have 4 doors.

What to go for......readies available to tune of around £7kish.

Audi...mmm....common as muck and dull and boring unless S series and bone jarring ride and potentially expensive upkeep.
BMW....nuff said.

Cars I like the look of....Honda Legend, Mazda 6 or 3 MPS, Lexus IS250, Lexus GS300, Mazda 6 high spec Zugara or similar with 2.3l engines.

I want something different...I have 3 other cars I can drive...Peugeot 207GTI, Corolla T Sport. They give me the fun factor. MPG not a major issue as only doing 5000 miles a year in it. Discounting diesels as well. Maybe need to be careful of road tax....£495 yikes!

So what would you suggest/recommend.

"Mother-in-law lives in Surrey...we live in Aberdeen and she visits twice a year hence the need for 4 doors. Can't see grand children on the horizon for at least 5/6 years.... "

If she is only there twice year buy what you want and if she won't fit in it rent a car for the short periods.

There are lots of sub standard heater control valves on the market that can cause overheating.Use a genuine Ford part and move on from there.

To cut a long story short, I wrote my car off whilst drink driving Dec 2013 and I'd damaged a lamppost in the process. My car insurance at the time said they'd deal with any costs as third party but would chase me up for the money back. Ive now just received a letter from said insurance company roughly 30 months later wanting £1500 for property damage.

Is there any advice I could have with regards to possibly a limit on when they can badger me for money as it was such a long time ago I thought it was all swept under the carpet. Surely they can't come back to me almost 3 years later wanting money?

No problem with that. However, for me the key thing in this is whether or not someone is entitled to make a polite comment on the situation.

Hi

After much deliberation I'm inclined to see the Mk7 Golf 1.4 TSI (122) in SE Spec as our ideal next car (2-3 years old....belt cam I'm guessing?).

The only problem seems to be contradictory/confusing information re the performance of this engine. Some sites (i.e. all the Autotrader and some of the garage ads) list it as 0-60 in 11.0 seconds with a top speed of 108mph.

Other sites (inc HJ) list it as a far more acceptable 0-62 of 9.3 secs and a top whack of 126mph.

I know there's a 1.4 150bhp ACT unit which is out of my price range, but is there some other variation in the lower power 1.4 TSi engines (circa 2013/14) that I'm not aware of or have the various sites just made a mess of things?

Thanks in advance

ps: if anyone out there has a Golf of that approx spec/vintage I'd really appreciate your thoughts on the car Read more

Just driven the thing home. 20 miles motorway, 5 around town to call at the shops then 5 on single carriageway A road back home.

Averaging 48.4mpg two up, sticking to in or around the speed limits

Great for a petrol car with a 0-62 of 9.3s.

The only question now is whether I'll ever have the confidence to try the park assist function...where to find a couple of handy hay bales to practice??

Just ordered a 32GB SD card to use as the main storage device for my music ...amazing how technology has come on since the MK 4 Mondeo I had last where a 6 CD autochanger really was the bees knees.

I will miss the Mondy though, cracking car!

Okay so the words "old" and "cheap" are relative but I have a van that is 8 years old and a car that is 13 years old. I am getting insulting comments about both of them with garages telling me they might not be worth repairing and friends saying it is time I got new ones.
I find this annoying, just because most people are financed up to their eye balls?
They even try make me feel guilty by saying the car may not be safe (NCAP 4 star rated) and looks great to me! Trading vehicles in every 3-5 years is up to you but not economical? What's wrong with buying one to last 10+ years?
car is worth about 700 quid but I would probably spend up to that on a repair if I had to as don't think I would find a better one for that price plus the risk of buying something you don't know. Or if I couldn't get the part anywhere.
Anybody else getting this?
What would make you finally let go of it? Read more

In the old days when I bought my first cars, it was often necessary to change them every 2 or 3 years before body corrosion got too bad. That hasn't been the case for over 20 years. So provided a used car is chosen with reasonable care, it should be possible to keep it running for many years.

Our 'duty' car is now 8 years old and has just needed its second set of new tyres. Apart from pads and discs and normal fluid changes it has required no other visits to the garage. The 'fun' car is now 25 and needs a bit more attention, but the only snag it has had was a bit of dirt in the carburettor (yes, it has one of those, and a choke too, of course).

Yes you read it right, another 1.2 3 cylinder Polo misfiring its way into yet another bank account.

Background:

I bought a 2006 VW Polo E 1.2 as a first car for £1400. The first few weeks were good in fact they were great...until I did a motorway run and the dreaded engine light came on. The engine vibrations also worsened. So I took it to my local garage and he changed out a coil pack. Simple, problem solved? Sadly not.

The same issues carried on which lead me to believe that the car needs a service and injector clean out. Unfortunately £100 and a bottle of Techron later we have not progressed anywhere.

So I thought "hey maybe its another coil pack", nope. Shoutout to "Car Parts 4 Less" for the speedy delivery nonetheless.

So what next?

Well I don't normally retreat to forums but in this case its my only option.

So I suppose the EGR valve is finished or the piston head needs to be changed. Any ideas of how much that may cost? Could it potentially be something else? Other issues include a funny clutch that needs a tonne of gas to pull away, culprit?

Bear in mind the OBD II is just gonna say its a misfire on Cylinder 'X'. So please don't give me the "You should have taken it to another garage, blah blah" comment.

Honestly I wish I bought a Toyota Yaris.....

Cheers.

So yeah after talking to my mechanic this morning he said he'd charge £700 for parts and labour for a valve change. Is it worth it? I don't think so. The car is in mint condition and the only thing wrong is this valve issue. So how much is it worth? Plus what other car can I buy for less than £2000 that is decent. What are common faults with 1.3ltr Yaris's and what Kia are you suggesting?

Recently sold wife's 2005 1.3 Yaris for £1500 to a local dealer, had it for 6 years, nothing but routine servicing, a couple of tyres, wiper blades and a set of front pads. You should be able to find one for £2000 or less if you shop around.

The unit blows hot and cold constantly. In warm weather it blows warm and cold, and in cold weather it blows hot and warm. It also does the same thing when set to 'Low', which sort of rules out the interior temp sensor.

You can hear the hot/cold servo motor running as the temp goes up and down, so something must be telling it do this!.

Checked the error codes, but nothing logged.

It also appears worse when around town, better when on a steady run.

Any ideas anyone? Read more
