I bought a new x3 on 10 March 2011. I also bought the five year service pack and had the car serviced at a BMW dealer after two and four years. (2 year intervals for diesel)

All went well unti 24 March 2016, the car was then 5 years 2 weeks old and had done a tiny 13k miles. ... Read more

Many thanks for that pd.

Luckily i haven't needed the services of one of these shops for some years now, handy to have one that comes recommended in mind now i've been daft enough to say that.

Hi,

As said the focus failed its MOT yesterday and I have a man ( trustworthy ) who will do a bit of welding and fit the failed parts in 2 days time.... Read more

A trusted regular chap who does welding and the like isn't likely to turn you over, if he identifies the failing parts, removes them then takes them down to his local factor, the right parts are going to be obtained first time because they can be paired up at the counter.

I'm always sceptical about buying oil on Ebay unless it's a reputable seller as there have been many cases of 'fake' oil being sold and who know what might actually be in that bottle?

If you can't monitor your speed and the road at the same time using a speedometer, then it's time to give up driving.

Drive shafts are permanently engaged to the diff/gearbox, so your problem is with the clutch or gear selection.

In last Saturday's Daily Telegraph someone wrote in who was planning to go on a European trip in a 2003 Peugeot. HJ replied that replacing the water pump is always a good idea before taking an old car for a long journey. I have a 1999 Honda which I am planning to take to Europe this summer - not for the first time. Should I be replacing the water pump? I've never had any obvious trouble nor the whining water pump noise. Read more

Our Honda Shuttle with the 2.3 VTEC engine has served us well for years. It's been properly serviced, at a good Indy, and the cam belt has been done but not the water pump. I might get them to quote me for a new one before we go - if they can get the parts. The alternator went a year or so back and it was booked in for a new alternator but in the end they couldn't get hold of one so the car was off the road for a week while the old alternator was sent away for repair and reconditioning - the old fashioned way!

Before I bit the bullet and took my carb apart, I tried using gas to get it to idle. As well as being a crude work-around for my current problem, this could address general issues with fuel dilution on startup, and MIGHT be usable as a performance booster with a diesel.

I recently bought this car in very good condition and very well maintained, it drives like a dream but is only averaging 37.7 mpg, the one I replaced it with was doing 50-60mpg and my C5 with the same engine is doing around 50 mpg.

I have disconnected the EGR, fitted a replacement MAF, the one off the other car, and fitted a new thermostat to no avail.... Read more

I have fitted the MAF from the one that does 60 mpg - no change.
