I will shortly be in the market for a replacement car. I will want a mid size estate, but it must be an auto. I intend to keep it for a good few years, so am happy to spend time looking for the right one, once I decide which best suits me.
I don't want anything physically bigger than 3 Series/C Class... Read more
A friend of my fiancee's mother is selling her 1998 Toyota Corolla 1.3 car. There are a few body work issues (which is all to be expected for an 18 year old car), and it drives much much better than the Peugeot 3008 I'm currently driving and has only done 98,000 and she has had it since 10,000. It's always been serviced and passed MOT's etc. It's hard not to like the car.
As I drove it yesterday, liking how it handled and that the gear changes were sweet, I took it up a dual carriageway near my house. The limit goes from 50, to 60, then to 70mph, and the car handled it fine.... Read more
My guess, air leak somewhere in the air filter / inlet ducting.
I have my eye on a 2015 car with 3.5k miles. I've bought used before, but nothing with any warranty left and not from a main dealer!
I'm versed in the usual things to look at and questions to ask, but this is rather different to buying a 5-year-old motor. Obviously I'll be looking around the vehicle for any obvious stuff, under the bonnet and testing it out first... but no with service history yet, no MOT needed for a couple of years... what things do I need to look for/ask/be wary of? My mind has gone blank thinking about it!... Read more
Thanks for the advice everyone. I'm now the proud owner of a 65 reg Mazda 6.

Hi all,
I have just brought a partner quicksilver 2.0d 54plate. now the heater speed control works ok( i can hear the fan getting faster) the air that is coming out gets warm(so im assuming the heater matrix is ok) but the amount of air coming out of the vents is very minimal(not enough to blow the hairs on my hand) The dealer said that he thought it was week but normal for the car!... thanks for your help & advice.
i decided to take it apart and have a look tonight. only found that someone has put the wires back onto the motor the wrong way round!...
I forgot to get the green slip off my V5C when I part-exchanged my car at a dealer's. When I texted him, he said, I didn't need to and he had already sent it off. My tax would be refunded. However, 12 days later the car is still showing as taxed on the DVLA. Can this be right and what can I do about it? (I know I've been an idiot but I was in a bit of a muddle the day I did the deal.) My last 2 cars took between 6 and 8 weeks to show on their web site as not taxed, you can do it through their site but still takes ages to see, which I did to make it faster but it doesnt
I'm currently looking at a used Chrysler pt cruiser 2003. It's been standing unused for a few weeks since the seller got a new car. I'm told since the battery was flat and has been recharged the rear wiper won't stop. Any ideas how to fix this fault if I did buy the vehicle? Is this a common fault?

I agree, although if you can get it for no more than £500 with a long MoT, you could be lucky and get a year's worth of cheap motoring out of it.
As we always say on here, at this price level condition is more important than make or model. I think you have a better chance of getting somethig sound if you look at something Japanese and petrol-powered, say a Toyota Verso.
My recently purchased 96,000 miles, Focus 1.8 zetec petrol estate has full service history, with all receipts kept by the last owner from 2008 to prove this. Each year it was given a full service, not an interim one at all, even though annual mileage was between 7,000 and 11,000.
I will waxoyl or bilt hamber the underside, and envisage keeping the car several years. I expect to cover no more than about 11,000 miles each year. The plan is to have the car serviced, with a full service each year at my garage, and get a mechanic friend to change the oil and filter inbetween at about 5,500 miles. Does this sound extravagant ot just plain sensible? BTW, a full service, including pollen filter, at my garage will be £204 inclusive of VAT. Read more
Did it have a cabin filter fitted?
Must admit I've never looked, mainly because I've read that after prising out the flimsy black plastic coverings there is a risk of water ingress as the sealing is never quite as good again. As long as the excellent heater and aircon still work and there are no smells, I'm happy....
If I fit a manual turbo boost controller, can I connect the hose leading to the controller to the large pipe just before the intercooler rather than to the turbo itself, as the turbo is totally inaccessible ? Would it still work? Read more
OP - are you wanting to do this because you have a problem with your turbo?
The repeat sensor causes a bit of trouble on the 407, particularly more on the 2L model.
When I start my car and let it idle (I can't drive it, I haven't passed my test yet) it has no problems while its heating up, but when it gets to operating temperature the revs drop and then return to normal and it repeats for a couple of minutes then cuts out. I read that a quick solder job can fix it, but it's a different throttle body? I can't think of what it could be? Read more
Your car is the later model that does not have the throttle body with solder joint issues.Without a more in depth investigation,It would be difficult to diagnose the problem.
Hi folks

Yep it's booked in, just seeking opinions/advice in case this has been seen before.

Well seeing as you're a chap with an open mind, take the Subaru for example, Outback with 2.5 engine bought for say £6k, spend £1100 on LPG conversion (incl flashlube, most important) and you have an ultra reliable car that will do all you ask of it averaging 25mpg @ 50p per litre, thats Diesel economy with petrol simplicity in anyones book...we have two LPG converted cars, one MB 3.2 litre one Outback H6, its our choice of fuelling for the forseeable, we don't calculate whether to convert on a 'payback basis' only, best avoid direct injection petrols if LPG might be of interest.
German cars without DI take very well to LPG if thats of interest, harder valves and seats in the main, but you could struggle with a BMW for somewhere to put the tank, my MB has run for years on it, possibly smoother than on petrol....
