Toyota Corolla 1.3 1998 - Whistling when at high RPM - mickburkesnr

A friend of my fiancee's mother is selling her 1998 Toyota Corolla 1.3 car. There are a few body work issues (which is all to be expected for an 18 year old car), and it drives much much better than the Peugeot 3008 I'm currently driving and has only done 98,000 and she has had it since 10,000. It's always been serviced and passed MOT's etc. It's hard not to like the car.

As I drove it yesterday, liking how it handled and that the gear changes were sweet, I took it up a dual carriageway near my house. The limit goes from 50, to 60, then to 70mph, and the car handled it fine.

But, when it got to around 65/70mph I could hear a high pitch whistle. I let my foot up from the accelerator and the whistle stopped immediately. I put my foot back on it, and the whistle came back. For the rest of the drive I went round 30/40 mph roads and the only way I could get the whistle to come back was to rev the engine very high. The car lacks a rev counter, so I'm unsure what RPM the whistle came in at. But it's a 5 speed manual and a 1.3 engine so I would guess it would be around 3,000?

Anyway, I've never heard a whistle like that in a car before. I was wondering if anyone would have an idea where this whistle would be coming from and whether it's a normal noise or not.

My guess, air leak somewhere in the air filter / inlet ducting.
