Hello,

I'm considering a short trip into Germany via the ferry to Rotterdam. I've a vague recollection about the requirement for winter tyres and other such obligations in order to be legal in Germany. Can any one advise on the specifics, or suggest websites to check please? Read more

Mike, that is not in lIne with the advice given by the ADAC. Since there is no legal definition (or at least EU regulated) of a winter tyre, M+S tyres are acceptable as are those with the snowflake symbol. Things may be different in Austria, of course.

I'm a bit surprised, I was under the impression that the snowflake symbol was definitive. A winter tread pattern is totally different from the M+S Goodyear Efficient Grip fitted to my CR-V, and I certainly wouldn't want to use them in the snow. ...

I have just exchanged my 2004 Fabia for a 2012 model. I previously had rear bumper sensors on the old one and I propose having them installed on the new. With the new car I can see nothing of the front of the car at all from the driving seat, which has made me consider sensors on the front bumper too. I live in an urban area where street parking easily is rare. Are front sensors more trouble than they are worth (from what I read) or are there sets on the market that do the job fairly comfortably?

It's very kind of you to report this ridiculous 'k******' spam every day, but you really don't need to as I check the forum most days and can see it for myself. It means that I have to check through the E-mails as well because of the reports.

I delete them and disable the poster's account but they just come back under another name: they are too stupid a form of pond life to realise that nobody is going to buy anything in response to an advert like that.... Read more

Horrific! The moderators on the SEAT forum must have given up, with the result that the forum isn't fit for purpose.

I will of course continue to delete the rubbish, so that that doesn't happen here, but I'm not prepared to spend any more time on something so worthless. If you have more spare time than I have, Andy, by all means get in touch with...

As I said, insist on having ALL of the parts. Make very sure they are aware that includes the slave cylinder parts.

Then take parts to an independent engineer, and get their written report (more expense). If they agree with you, then you can claim it all back from the dealership in SCC.

I bought a 61 plate renault megane in jan 15 from a reputable, Renault approved dealership. I paid extra for a service and MOT. 10 months on the cam shaft has cracked and is leaking oil. As a result I have to replace that and the cam belt. The car isn't even 4 years old and has done 42000 miles! Should I be expected to pay for this? Is it wear and tear or 'just one of those things' and should the corrosion have been seen during the service?

I have contacted Renault directly as the dealership are refusing to do anything about this. Read more

Simple facts:

A camshaft is under great stresses and if it is cracked it will very soon break totalling the remainder of the engine. If a cracked camshaft was actually diagnosed any garage would have told you not to drive the car until it was fixed....

I have a 2010 VW Scirocco 2.0 TSI, with 39000 miles on the clock. It has been running like new with no signs of any engine issues. I get it in one morning at home and the engine wont start. The AA tow it to VW. VW have told me that the timing chain has jumped, snapping and bending the pistons and valves. They say it needs a complete new engine. What I don't understand is how I pulled up at home the night before, engine running smoothly and quietly, no issues and the next morning this catastrophic damage could have happened to the engine. Surely chains jumping and snapping pistons/valves would make some noise and would happen whilst driving. This just doesn't sound right to me, especially in a car of this age and mileage. Your thoughts appreciated!! Read more

On a nother note 'vorsprung durch technik' when you attempt to translate you soon find it does to translate very will into english and for sure does not translate into "Advancement through technology" more like "winning margin through technology" so maybe they really mean cheating via technology?

I have just bought a car with Mercedes roadside and home assistance. But i have also have recovery through Brittania with my bank.

But do the Mercedes recovery team through Allianze provide a more comprehensive service than Brittania. I E do they carry parts and are they Mercedes trained technicians ?... Read more

RobJP

If Merc assistance is anything like BMW assist then yes, they will carry a range of common parts to get you going, and they will be fully trained technicians.

A friend had an EGR valve failure on his 520d a few months ago, on a Saturday evening in Chester. Called BMW assist on the car, they diagnosed the fault remotely on the diagnostics, the engineer was with him 40 minutes later. ...

We all hear about problems with the electric handbrakes on VW Passats of the 05 era.

But are there any manufacturers that have managed to produce a system that will work reliably in the British climate ? Read more

RobJP

BMW have been using them on the 5-series since 2010, when the F10/F11 variants came out, and on the Z4 since 2009. The 3-series has a standard handbrake. No idea about other models.

I've not heard of any problems with those that are electronic - though the word 'yet' should probably be inserted there !
