It's very kind of you to report this ridiculous 'k******' spam every day, but you really don't need to as I check the forum most days and can see it for myself. It means that I have to check through the E-mails as well because of the reports.

I delete them and disable the poster's account but they just come back under another name: they are too stupid a form of pond life to realise that nobody is going to buy anything in response to an advert like that.

If you google the number, you can see that hundreds of other sites are infested by the same thing.

Just ignore them.

Will do. Its a shame we can't give one spam site's contact details to another and watch them squirm! Is there any way you can block their IP address[es] (or ones from a particular country if they are from somewhere in the Far East or suchlike) so they can't join up again and again? They also seem to use variations on a theme as regards their usernames (same name plus different numbers). If they're from the UK, you could pass their details to the Information Commissioner or suchlike.

It's a shame you can't have them prosecuted. Sending spam email to private (non company) email accounts is a criminal offence.

I see what you mean. They even post on the law forum:

Wow - they really are quite brazen, or increadibly dense! I can't wait for them to do the same to a Police website or officer, or even someone from GCHQ/MI5! A shame all those computer geeks and their kit on TV crime 'dramas' aren't real - and how easy they can 'track' these sort of people back to their source and 'get' them!

My name was recently used as an alias on spam email. It cost me some head scratching to sort out why I was being accused. My name was used but a friends address. We think his computer was hacked by someone over a popular sales site.

Reporting spam - Engineer Andy

The same happened to an ex-colleague of mine - often it happens when people get over-confident with their computing abilities/security awareness and visit the wrong site or enter into an online 'competition' that is nothing of the sort.

My motto is better to be safe than sorry - if you ain't sure about visiting a website etc, don't risk it. I'm still amazed also at the number of people without decent firewall/AV software and who regularly open emails that don't look kosher.

I don't think that the people who "try this on" are neccessarily bad - just naive chancers.

However, they get encouraged because we click on the threads, even if we only read and never respond.

If we don't ever "read" they will drift away and leave us alone

The choice is ours ... ?

Reporting spam - Engineer Andy

Doesn't look like they're 'drifting away', in fact they are 'ramping up' their efforts - multiple posts on three sections. Surely the IT people can block these IP addresses or groups of IP addresses from a particular country? If they are doing so from the UK/EU, then they are subject to our laws and surely can be reported to their ISP and the authorities, just like those who pirate films etc.

If you want the ultimate SPAM experience try this:

http://www.seat-forum.co.uk/forum/index.php

When I first bought my Leon I joined and there was a bit of banter but not much but there was always SPAM. Then banter became less and SPAM increased, I complained to Admin and was banned.

Try and find a genuine post on there now.

Horrific! The moderators on the SEAT forum must have given up, with the result that the forum isn't fit for purpose.

I will of course continue to delete the rubbish, so that that doesn't happen here, but I'm not prepared to spend any more time on something so worthless. If you have more spare time than I have, Andy, by all means get in touch with

kalpesh@honestjohn.co.uk

I neither know nor care what an IP address is, but I'm sure Kalpesh does.
