Hello guys,

April this year we bought a 62 plate Avensis estate (with the 1.8 petrol and CVT 'box), which we like very much.
Whilst the Toyota CVT seems generally reliable, from what I've read they are sufficiently complex they are effectively unrepairable and any issues would necessitate replacement, which is eye-poppingly expensive.... Read more
Many thanks for coming back to us. Glad the Avensis has gone well: your experience is typical of Toyota owners.
Do start a new rhread and tell us about the process of deciding on an EV, as that's sure to be of interest.
Hi I have a 2004 Laguna and the heater fan has stopped working, it is the climate control one with air con. Previously to the fan stopping working the heater was always warm even when turned down to number 16 but would be hot at number 26. I have pulled all fuses from drivers side fuse box and under the bonnet and all seem ok have also removed and replace all the relays under the bonnet but still no joy. Does anybody have any ideas please as I can't afford to pay the extortionate Renault prices but don't mind getting tools out and getting my hands dirty ha, cheers. Read more
Not 100% sure of the set up on this model, but on many French cars, the electronic speed regulator is built into the base of the blower motor plastic housing.A clue may be the number of wires connected to the fan motor unit.
I had a new DPF and EGR valve fitted last week. Now the car is puffing white smoke - not continuously but enough to be noticable and a fault code of P1180 which I believe to be Fuel Delivery Malfunction. Could anyone spread some light on this? There was no smoke before it went into the garage to have the DPF done. After spending £900 on the last repair I really cannot afford another one.
Ok, car went into garage. He said no loss of oil or coolant, only fault code was the 118004 which was there previously. He said not to worry about that code because the fuel heater is only needed when it's cold and some engines don't even have one!?!?! It smokes every 6/7 days then stops. Engine runs a bit rough and a bit noisy but not excessively. I'm ready to throw the towel in with this car but I have no choice as still on finance. I'm not able to do any work on it myself.
I’m hoping someone can give me some help, I have a 2003 Focus 1.6. ... Read more
I thought i would come here for a bit of friendly advise of ideas of how to rectify a fault....i was wrong.
Yes, the replies were a bit blunt perhaps. But as you are 'in the trade', can't you or your colleagues decide what may be rattling against what? ('a rattle' is not a very specific description)....
Hi folks, I'm after some advice. Just got my micra back from Nissan (£114 lighter!) and have been told I have a stretched timing chain. Going to be honest it means nothing to me! They said its 25mm rather than 10. Can anyone advise me what I should do now. The repair they have quoted £1300 and as the car is only worth £1000, so I don't want to do that. So if I keep driving it how long will it last? Is it a case it will be a non runner soon so I should sell or will it go on like it is for a while so might be worth keeping. It is a 04 plate and only done 33000 so it's a shame to get rid of it but don't want to be left with a dud!
Hope that all makes sense. Any advice great fully received, thanks Read more
Thanks guys. I have taken it to an lndy and will see how much he quotes
My girlfriend's head gasket blew up a month ago and the dealership (not Citroen) have just got it repaired and given her the bill.
£1350 for head gasket repair and skimming!... Read more
Main dealer labour rates its probably not far out depending on how involved the job was, what caused the gasket failure and how long had it been damaged.
Skimming the head means fully stripping it out, then cleaning up reassembly valve reseating etc, full cooling system clean if oil was mixed with coolant....
My daughter has a problem with her 2014 Vauxhall Astra Mk6 1.7dti. There is a burning smell coming from the engine. The car was taken to the Vauxhall main dealer and it was diagnosed to be a clutch problem and therefore doesnt come under the car's warranty for repair.
The smell of burning is even when the car is stationery with the car idling. This looks like it is going to be a very expensive repair.... Read more
With the burning smell that you describe, together with any partial loss of drive, if indeed there is, it sounds highly likely that the clutch failure will be due to wear, and in which case a warranty claim would stand little or no chance of being successful. In any event if the clutch was faulty or if there was a manufacturing defect then this would with almost certainty have shown up long before now.
Every motor technician everywhere will know of a case where someone has burned their clutch out within weeks of a new one being fitted. I remember years ago when I worked in a Vauxhall Dealer we had an elderly lady customer with a Chevette that needed a new clutch every six weeks. If you'd seen how she drove it you'd know why....

Hi, I have successfully bodged my rattling gearstick on my 2015 Peugeot Partner by doing the following (its not 100% perfect but its 98% better):
Jack up the left side of the van on solid ground & support it on axle stands (- do not crawl under an unsupported van), crawl under the van & you will find the 2 gearchange cables on the passenger side of the gearbox tunnel. The problem is that there is some play in the cables where they are connected to the selectors on the transmission & this causes the 2 cables to vibrate/rub together causing the rattling noise. Note that the original cables have a stingy piece of rubber pipe on the to stop them rattling....
Very difficult to act without evidence. If there is CCTV then find out who has it and ask for their help. If available you have the required proof to approach the parents, without it you risk not only alienating your neighbours but still having to pay the damage repair yourself. The ball is in your court now. Good luck.
