My 22 year old daughter needs a car and has £2,000 to spend on the car itself. I can't decide which would be best between a 2007 C1 with 75,000 miles or a 2004 Toyota Yaris with 70,000 miles. I'm looking at both cars tomorrow afternoon, I reckon I can get both down to around £2,000. The advantage of the C1 is £20 tax and 55mpg but I fear that it isn't as well made as the Yaris., both cars cost the same to insure. She will be leaving Uni this year with debt so low repair bills are important. Both cars have FSH with long MOTs.

My main concern is whether a C1 will be as durable as the well proven Yaris? Which would you buy In these circumstances?

if the history and all the paperwork is there to back it up then it should be a goodun I've no problem with buying old or high milage cars as long as the paperwork is there to back everything up.

My mk4 mondeo blows a tail/stop light really frequently. A bulb seems to last about 1 month only. I got a box of 10 oFF eBay for £2 and its a 2 Min job. Still its annoying, any ideas for solution. I've tried decent bulbs also. They are frequently white/misted up when i remove them? Too much currant? Read more

Well, first of all identify whether it's the brake light or the sidelight filament which is blowing. If it's the 5w sidelight filament, we have to ask if they are flickering due to, say, a corroded connection (as with the brake light filament). You could do with someone following your car to see if the lights do flicker. If it's the brake light filament blowing, then a possible cause could be the switch on the brake pedal. Check if that's loose. The most likely cause would be a corroded earth connection.

Shortly after taking delivery of my car in Dec last year I noticed that despite the engine warming up as normal the engine was idling at around 1100 revs when I came to a standstill. Obviously at this speed the engine stop start will not kick in and therefore I assume that I am wasting fuel. This also occurs after long journey's, for instance I drove from Manchester to Accrington this morning and upon arrival and as usual the engine when stationary was at 1100 rpm. I have had it into the VW dealer in Stockport who tell me that there is nothing wrong with it as if there was this would show up on the diagnostic test that they do. I have even driven from Manchester to the Midlands with the same result, surely this cannot be correct? On occasions it does idle at 800-900 and of course the stop start does kick in but this is not often. Also I have experienced on a couple of occasions a loss of power when setting off and although the revs appear to be increasing on the dial I get virtually no acceleration from the car. If I stop and switch off it appears to rectify itself. Most of my journeys are on the motorway where I travel at no more than 65 mph and I am averaging 64.8 mpg. Read more

Hi all,
I'm after a car for the other half and have decided to go to the large "trade" supermarket in London as they have several of the model we want. On their website they say " find your next car haggle and hassle free". To be fair their prices do look cheap but I just wondered if anyone had any luck knocking any money off the sticker price as paying full asking price is alien to me! Cheers Read more

There was also an article in the Telegraph this week about the Bank of England creating electronic money.

It is already! Numbers on a screen...gone in the press of a fat finger.

Can somebody please explain to me why Honest John gives the Audi A4 Avant (from 2008 onwards..) a 5 Star rating when there are numerous reports on there stating clutch and DMF failure , sometimes repeatedly, after low milages ? Concerns the 2.0 TDI 170 engine apparantly ...

The biggest problem with user reviews/reliability figures is sorting the company car user from the private punter. Few, if any, company car users will keep the car out of the warranty period so may never come across the problems a private punter will with a car out of warranty. However it doesn't take long to research a little on the Internet to find that a lot of the top driver reviews don't look so good when you get past the two or three year mark and are even worse when you look at manufacturer response to ongoing reliability issues.

Completely true - you need to read between the lines.

Some reviews can sound like gushing first impressions, the more useful ones are where someone has bought and owned the car for at least five or six years, or they have recently bought a much older car, and are happy with how it's holding up....
