I recently was charged by my hgarage for freeing rear brake drum clogged with brake dust after the brake had siezed. The vehicle had annual service at that garage at end of March. Should not the brake drums have been inspected and cleaned out at that time? Read more

Hi Anchor,

Guess the answer is no, not unless it's specified in the service schedule or you specifically request it.

Check that the air filter is not soaking wet.

Pull apart all the electrical connectors in the engine bay, dry them & spray with WD40 before re-connecting them....

The o/s CV joint on my car is making a hell of a racket even on gentle parking manoevres.

Have never changed a cv joint before, I assume on this car there is an inner and outer one. Is one known to wear more than the other and are they a relatively simple job for a home mechanic like me? Thanks Stuart Read more

Many Thanks Peter, It is the clicking noise so I will get an outer one and give it a go, Cheers!

Manoeuvre involves approaching a roundabout (not a big one with all exits visible and capable of carrying two cars side-by-side) and leaving on 3rd exit (3 o'clock position). Just before I am about level with my exit 1 with appropriate signal and road position, car waiting at my exit 1 decides to proceed onto roundabout and take his first exit (soon to become my 2nd exit which is at my 12 o'clock position).

No collision took place and assuming we both stick to our intended paths no collision would take place but I have noticed recently and increase the number of drivers willing to enter a roundabout ultimately without giving way to those already into their manoeuvre even though they have no intention of taking the same exit.... I must admit i find rounabouts a bit of a pain in the backside. Our strech of road Hedon Road in a space of about four miles four roundabouts and a load of accidents.A lot of lorries turning over turning into the dock entrances. This road was if i can remember upgraded ten years ago. Before the upgrading the nickname by lorry drivers was the road to hell.We waited years for the upgrading of this road and i expected something similair what they have in the states.Keep traffic flowing no roundabouts If there is a accident on Hedon Road Clive Sullivan way named after a wales rugby player.Hull is at a standstill traffic diversions and the like which have happened quite a few times over the last few months.Rant over.!

The AA turned out to my daughters ford KA as it over heated in a shopping center. They tightend up a hose clip and declared the elec cooling fan U/S.

How do I check the cooling fan or its sensor . Its not seized up, spins freely.... Read more

Peter.N.

If its controlled by the engine ECU its not easy, if it has a sensor it will probably be on the thermostat housing and you should be able to check that just by joing the connections together which should make the fan run, if its faulty, otherwise you need to check for 12 volts on the fan connections when it should be running.

If its an ECU job you will need to get the fault codes read.

SWMBO's car tax expired at midnight, exactly same time as insurance, (please read on).

Got car MOT'd before we went on fortnight's holiday, but I forgot to renew insurance and apply for road tax at same time.

Re-insured vehicle last Friday (27th Aug.) commencing 1st Sep. and tried to apply for tax on line yesterday (31st Aug), as insurance certificate did not arrive in post (so was not possible to tax at post office), but the on-line system stated that insurance was not valid!

Called insurance company, who said there was nothing more they could do, but send out a duplicate certificate in post!

ASKMID was okay yesterday (31st), but now showing NOT-OKAY as midnight has passed.

Suggestions on a postcard if I want to use the car in the meantime? Read more

My own advice is not to buy tax online unless you are pre-ordering prior to expiry date. If you are caught in the street even though the vehicle is taxed you can still be prosecuted for failure to display.

This changed some time ago. (red box on reverse of V11) You now get 5 working days of not needing to display - so long as the tax has been applied for and paid before the existing one expires.
