If I drive my big old V8 (or V12 come to that) one tenth of the miles someone else drives in their Scrappage Scheme Pacific Rim Puddlejumper who are they to accuse me of being environmentally unfriendly? Burble on, baby...

>but the new "oil" is sand ! would you believe it?<
It's a well-known option. There was an attempt to set up an industry extracting oil from shale on the Somerset coast as long ago as the 1920s. AFAIK the building used is still there, beside the 'beach' car park at Kilve.

I need to drive from central Birmingham to Sheffield, leaving around 4.30 pm this afternoon.

It looks like my options are A38/M6/M42/M1 or A38/61. Have any Backroomers done this trip regularly? Any pointers re the best route?

Thanks

Focus 1.6 manual is 34mths old and still under warranty, 1 owner bought from local Ford garage.

Gearbox failed at end of January -recon gearbox fitted - it lasted 7 days. New gearbox was fitted - it lasted 2 weeks and failed so it is now in for a 3rd gearbox replacement in as many weeks.

Service manager said he hopes this new one will be OK as the warranty on the gearbox will expire when the car is 3 years old i.e. 1st March.

Surely after a catalogue of disasters Ford cannot simply disown the warranty work! or is the service manager correct?

What would you do? Read more

a reconditioned box is not defined in law it could simply be a s/h one
with a wash and brush up

I remember reading that a few years ago following a debate about a failed recon engine on another site. It's incredible, isn't it?

Recon could involve a quick wash down with a hose, a ground-up rebuild with all new parts, or anything in between.

I've never understood what the "value add" of a recon box is over a drastically cheaper secondhand/breakers yard unit, especially as most breakers will guarantee major units such as engines and 'boxes for 30-90 days. The better ones even test components before they strip them and offer them for sale.

....... it was first launched?

Mazda are releasing a 20th anniversary edition. Thats 2 decades of pretty much the same car!

It debuted when the Citroen XM was European Car of the Year.
In the same year, the Rover Metro was launched, and Skoda 130L, Lada Riva 1200L and Yugo 511 were all still about!

Can't say its not been a durable design! Read more

The overall shape of the MX-5 may be similar (itself heavily influenced by the much older Lotus Elan) but under the skin it has completely changed. It's like saying the Toyota Corrola is the world's best selling car. It's not, but it is the world's best-selling car BADGE

Been a few recall campaigns lately to say the least and my question relates to the issue of liabilty. Does the fact you as an owner being aware of a potentialy, albeit very slim, chance of an accident as a result of your car having an inherent fault cause blame on your behalf?? Toyota recently issued a press release confirming along with the ABI that cover on their affected vehicles would not be affected. Does this set a precident and can we assume all cars from all makers subject to recall will not have their cover affected. The subject is being raised as a result of Mrs C`s Grande Punto being one of the 56,000+ subject to a check on the integrity of its steering column....ooohh they kept that quiet didnt they haha??

This issue has just occured to me and I will be speaking to my insurance provider in the morning but in the interim I will be interested in any comments. Read more

Yup - had mine done a couple of weeks ago. I believe the issue was a nut or bolt not being tightened to the correct torque setting.

Just water in the engine? Potential for longer term electrical issues perhaps?

Good Evening

2.0 litre petrol Ford Focus (Duratec)

My girlfriend's Dad has a non-problem (i.e. he doesn't care to admit it exists) with his Focus.

It always takes a bit of cranking over but always catches (just a bit longer than other petrols I'm used to). Anyway, last Sunday it wouldn't start at all. Eventually got it started after an hour of letting it sit. As it did so a large amount of white/cream smoke came out of the exhaust when he revved it. That eventually subsided.

What could be the problem? The engine management light isn't illuminated. There is no starting problem when warm. Read more

Confirmed, it is a petrol

I'm travelling from Brentwood, Essex to Newark on Trent, Notts, this Sunday afternoon and am wondering whether to take the A1 or M1!

The A1 is a far more direct route, some 23 miles shorter journey in fact, but is it going to be slow and full of roadworks?! Or is the M1, come to that.

Is there anyone in here genuinely in the know about this? Read more

Thank you for all the replies and for the helpful website links too.

I asked the question as in my years of travelling around the country (I'm a gigging musician...) I've found that, as a rule, the M road is far quicker than the A road, even if it means quite a detour. I have not much experience of the A1, however, so will try it tomorrow! Thanks again.

Well, not quite, but it feels like it. Had my SIL's Blingo van booked in for MOT on Monday.
He brought it round on Sunday and informed me it needed a back box on the exhaust.
I knew there was no point in presenting it as it was, 'cos of the emissions test. As it was short notice, I took it to one of the Nationals on Monday morning. Normally I would have done the job, getting a box trade discount ...60% normally. But I didn't want to reschedule the MOT.
The cheapest I could find was about £110, one chain wanted £137 plus VAT.!!
Had it done at the cheaper one, paid on my card and pocketed the bill.
Had a look at the bill today and I've been charged £1.50 to leave the old box for disposal !!

I presume they just rack up a truck load and weigh them in......for cash. It's not even far to the metal merchants , it's in the same road !!

Is there no stone left unturned for grabbing that extra bit of cash off the customer ?
I won't be using them again .

My dentist charged about £2000 for the twin back boxes recently, and the same for the front. There is a complicated set of interconnectring pipe and bridgework, stainless steel pegs, hangers, etc.
I wanted a decent system that doesn't rattle around, and zero emissions of course. I use Fluoriguard additive for long life.
