Hi

I've got up to £6000 to spend and am after something with a bit of poke and is fun to drive. I would value feedback and experiences of the following especially around the area of reliability and running costs (excl. fuel)

Peugeot 206 GTi 180 2004
Renaultsport Clio 182 2004/05
Ford Fiesta ST 150 2005/06
Citroen Xsara VTS 167 2004
Mazda 3 Sport 150 2005
Seat Ibiza FR 1.8T 150 2004

Simple question. Does anyone know whether the emergency vehicles and police cars in the UK are ever fitted with winter tyres? If not one would ask why, given that it seems important for these people above all to be able to get where they need to be in safety.

Good question, I don't know. I have seen good comments on the web, and although I have a friend here who has a set in his car he hasn't tried them yet. Like many people we have chains in the car, but the winter tyres make such a difference that the chains are rarely needed.

Have just purchased a new battery for my Focus. 6 years old - interesting to read Ford batteries don't seem to last long! Battery is calcium but not sure if this is silver calcium as there may, it seems, be different types. Is this likely to cause problems. Handbook says original was silver calcium. Replacement is however greater capacity. Read more

I used a Halfords calcium battery on my 1999 1.8 without any problems once the original died. The original battery had lasted around 8 years (80k+ miles IIRC) - pretty good IMO !

Not sure whether difference between calcium and calcium silver is important - I got the impression that the important thing was not to use a standard lead battery, due to the high voltages produce by Ford's smart charging system.

Does anybody have experience of changing the bulb in the foglights on this model. There are no obvious screws etc on the outside and the manual suggests that you take it to a dealer ( where they willcharge for 2hrs to fit a £6 bulb !). Read more

Best left until warmer weather - less danger of splitting cold plastic parts?

Just bought a JVC cd player from a very reputable E.Bay seller, and have installed it in my Peugeot 406 along with a new facia panel.

However, it won't keep the memories that I have programmed, and strangely when I open the door and the interior light comes on, so does the cd player!!! I would rather it came on with the ignition, as it also doesn't switch itself off when exiting the car.

It is wired straight to the existing iso lead, barring the steering wheel controls, so does anyone have any ideas? Read more

Is there anything that will turn my teenage daughter's ipod OFF when she gets in my car? :-)

Hi,

Thank you to steve_earwig for replying to an earlier message about my gearbox type.

I have another problem now. I have just started replacing the clucth on my 406 HDi (90) and I am having problems getting the lower suspension arms to part company with the balljoints. Obviously I have removed (and discarded) the nut that attaches the two, but cannot get the two to part company. I have done a few increasingly hard downward taps with a 4lb lump hammer on the balljoint end os the suspension arm, but nothing seems to want to give. I'm not sure I want to hit it any harder until I have had some advice.
As far as I can see, I am supposed to be dropping the suspesion arm off the balljoint. How much hassle is this usually. Should I try jacking the wheel hub up slightly?
Any help offered would be great!
Thanks,
Kevin. Read more

Smack the part were the ball joint goes through the leg on the hub this should shock it to come out or use a ball joint splitter.

Or do you mean remove the ball joint from the arm to fit new ones if so are they rivetted in?

hello

in the near future and hopefully no more than a few months, my daughter may want to buy a small automatic car as she has recently passed her test on a auto.

She is not sure what car she learnt to drive in or took her test in other than it was a small car and a automatic - lol.

my question is, what would be a good small auto to drive locally that is relatively cheap to run, insure, relaible and safe and max spend about 4/5k plus insurance.

the new micra is used by many driving schools - and appears to have a commanding driving position - so i'm assuming this meets our criteria. Anyothers/

thanks in advance! Read more

I have a 2.0 TDCI 115bhp, I had the dual mass flywheel changed, with the full clutch kit, slave cylinder, crankshaft sensor. But the car will not start, it just doesn't start, sometimes it starts for about a second and then cuts of. Its been at the mechanic's for about 1 week now and they haven't found the cause. Could someone please help. Read more

Does the sensor have to be setup after replacing?

It turns over but doesn't start. Its got fuel and its not frozen at all.
