My work van is leased so it doesn't get the attention it should get, anyway, driving along and the brake warning light comes on at the dashboard, although not all the time. Brakes work and feel fine by the way.

Checked the reservoir and it was barely on minimum! Now the reservoir is a fairly simple affair, no wiring or anything attached to the cap, it's just a cap that screws on. Inside there is the 'toilet roll' type tube going down into the chamber.

Thing is, when I started pouring the fluid in, it immediately came up to the top, very little from the bottle went in to make it come up like this. However, I can still see that the fluid 'inside' the chamber is still at the minimum mark. It's as though the 'toilet roll' tube has filled up and nothing else. Because of this the warning light is still coming on at times.

How can I get the reservoir to fill up properly or am I missing something here? Read more

Sorry it's too late but I had exactly the same issue with my wife's Punto last year.

Washed the filter out in some meths and it was fine. The fluid trickled thro' it then. It gets gunged up even tho it looks clear.

Any help appreciated. Have van which was fine on v cold morning (-12c) when I set out but died on A34 at 40mph. Recovered home by RAC. Only bought van at start of week and ran fine. Filled tank night before breakdown (Tesco).Have looked through this forum and have replaced plugs and fuel filter housing. Was ice (crystals) in filter. All cleared now, but still wont start (no fuel coming from outlet of filter). Van parked outside house in 3" snow. Have basic tool set (inc sockets). Assume fuel line clogged, maybe also tank? Any suggestions? Thanks Read more

Hi. Thanks. Sorted now. Was crud fuel from Tesco. Dirty and watery!. Half hour with hair dryer and diesel cleaner sorted it. Branded only from now on! Cheers

The wipers come on by theirselves when travelling or when initially starting vehicle.
Sometimes they cancel, if not they remain on and I have to fiddle with stalk.
Eventually they will shut off or go into intermittent wipe mode.
It's like something out of Mary Poppins! Read more

Suspect a duff stalk, either a broken contact or spring. Regards Peter

Took the caddy on a run today for approx 10 miles and the oil warning light and buzzer did come on until about 2 miles from home.

My car has become really sluggish. I was wondering whether this could be the glowplugs? They haven't been replaced as long as I have had it(1yr). Read more

Oh right. Check your throttle cable, I usually forget to mention that but its a distinct possibility.

Hi,

I recently posted a note about a slight engine hesitation. I have now narrowed it down. I have a 05 1.6 Focus 100BHP. When accelerating from a rolling start, speed around 15 to 25 mph, 2nd or 3rd gear, using about 1/4 throttle, I get a slight feeling that the engine is stuttering until about 2000rpm. It is most ntoiceable when the engine is cold or going up a gradient. Above 2500rpm the car pulls well.

Someone replied to my original note saying it the MAF sensor. Anyone have any other ideas? Where is the MAF? Can it be cleaned? My car did suffer with water getting in via the washer jet mounts on the bonnet. I have changed the plug leads and plugs.

Hi,

My focus 05 has the exact same problem and am struggling to diagnose the fault, did you have any luck? Any help will be greatly appreciated!...

Someone else used to do photo "competitions" - but this isn't one.
Spotted on my travels and I have no idea myself what it is, but would be interested to know.

There were a number of similar style and age around as well. Piccie taken from taxi window.

No not Rome. The Ford A looks like a very good suggestion.

What is the lowest temperature when cars can still run properly?

I am considering on UK context only - so assume no winter tyres, no special features on car to specifically tackle low temperature.

If components starts to fail, what will be first sign of failure?

On summer-grade diesel I don't think the temperature has to be all that low for the fuel to start to clog up. But with the appropriate fuel I don't think the temperature really matters very much, in principle.
A car in poor condition will certainly be much harder, or impossible to start, but that's a combination of poor maintenance or bad luck.

have you considered that the motor has frozen?
you want to try doing a car where you have to take the wheelarch liner out, only thing is in this cold weather they shatter once you try and remove them so its heatgun all round, gloves on ,then being very careful

I'm going to buy a newer version of my car but i'm considering switching to diesel because of the numbers: 0-60 time, torque and of course fuel economy are all in the diesel version's favour, only the BHP value and top end speed (which i'd never get even close to!) is in the petrol's favour by a tiny margin.

Does anyone have experience of the BMW 3 litre diesel M57TUD30 engine circa 2004? How does it run? What does it drive like? How does it behave coupled to an autobox?

I'd be buying one with about 60,000 miles on the clock, i think this is hopefully too soon to worry about aged injectors, knackered diesel pump or dpf renewal etc. are there any other big ticket items i should be aware of?

Many thanks in advance for any experience shared!
