Hi all,

I just bought my first peugeot. A 1.8 2002 406 lx. It was all great for a while, then a few days ago, the 'STOP' sign came on, I stopped for a while, then started again, but it was gone. Earlier today the car suddenly started cutting of whenever I break at low speed. When I restart, it starts okay on first trial, but every now and then the 'STOP' light flashes. Theres no indication whatsoever where the fault is from.

Later, I got home parked the car for a while, then drove around a bit, but it never happened again.

Four hours later, I start the car, and the engine diagonistics warning light is on, and 'anti pollution fault' is now showing on the screen.

Can anyone kindly help me here please?

Further, does any of your know really great peugeot mechanic around the oakwood/cockfosters/enfield area in London?

Thanks,

A bit too short notice sadly and I think I have already made a step too far in Geekdom. I will also have no memories since I from Manchestoh but I sometimes attend similar days in organised by the Manchestoh transport musu'om'

My spelling and grammoh here is quite sarcastical as I have spend a day or two in Lond'e'n.

Its a pitty if I had not been drinking tonight and not just got back from London last night I would have happily gone to this.

Just arrived in from seeing "Mesrine public enemy No 1" at our local art house cinema.

Set between 1973 and 1979 it shows a terrific variety of 70s French cars. Renaults 8, 12, 14 & 16, Peogeots 404, 204, 305 and 504, plenty of Citroens of course and a Chevrolet Corvair even makes an appearance. Great for car spotting and a superbly tense and exciting film. Highly recommended.

Car manufacturers have provided us motorists with a plethora of safety features to mitigate against our own (and others) errors/stupidity/misadventure. Think of it; air bags, pre tensioning belts, crumple zones etc to try to cut the risk of injury should the unfortunate occur.

On the A12 today, doing 60. I was overtaken by man on a powerful motorcycle. My guesstimate is that he was doing about 80 (maybe). He was wearing shorts, a T shirt and his helmet, of course.

Straight question, should motor cyclist be required by law to wear leathers to mitigate against their own (and others) errors/stupidity/misadventure? I appreciate leathers will not protect against impact, but the thought of flesh dragged on rough road surfaces makes me feel quite faint.

PS-I have nothing against motor cyclists, especially sensible ones. Read more

I rarely ride without at least a proper jacket these days. On the rare occasions when I do nip down to the shop wearing just jeans and T-shirt (NEVER shorts!) I am naturally more aware of my vulnerability and consequently ride in a more cautious manner. I don't do this deliberately it just happens.

Agree totally with Birdie's comments. The safer drivers feel in their own cage, the less likely they are to think of the safety of others; hence my admiration for Clarkson's "sharp spike" theory.

My own pet hate is full-face helmets; I find them restrictive, uncomfortable and claustrophobic, furthermore being a devotee of open-face lids I have no option but to slow down in heavy rain which can only be a good thing.

I have never (despite being a member) understood MAG's obsession with repealing the helmet law though. The only time I ever choose to ride without one is on the thankfully rare occasions when I am in a fellow biker's funeral procession, where the police generally have the good sense and courtesy to turn a blind eye. Even then I feel no compulsion to blast down the road at any high speed sans lid.

Like most cars these days, my 2005 3.0L X-Type has sealed for life ATF. It has now done 55000 miles and I reckon that ATF oil is now past its best. Has anyone changed the transmission oil on an auto X-Type here? Read more

Drivers should pay up even if they go to court and win say ministers.

Drivers who challenge motoring prosecutions should be made to pay their legal bills even if they win their case, ministers have said. The proposal would see successful defendants lose their century-old right to claim back their costs.

A change in the law would affect many of the 1.7million drivers a year who take their cases to court. Ministers are proposing that defendants lose their century-old right to claim back their legal costs.

It costs around £1,500 to fight charges of speeding, illegal parking and other motoring offences and this cost would not be fully reimbursed even if a driver was found innocent of all charges.

Peter Roberts CEO of the Drivers' Alliance said "it is fundamentally wrong for the state to financially penalise innocent drivers who are simply seeking justice against a faulty conviction".

Jeanette Miller, of Geoffrey Miller, a leading motoring law firm has raised a petition on the Downing Street website and the Drivers' Alliance urges everyone to sign it. If the principle of innocent until proven guilty is to be upheld in this country then it is imperative people who win a court case are not financially disadvantaged for defending themselves.

If there is no limit on the amount of money the state can use to oppress or harass the individual, there should be no limit on the amount he can use to defend himself.
