Sorry folks, but I need some advice...

Following the arrival of baby no.3, I am now considering getting a weekend car for the family as the Vectra estate is just not big enough. Therefore, I have a list of requirements:-

6/7/8 seater
petrol or diesel - no fancy diesel systems though
auto or manual - no fancy stuff here, just something reliable
Must have sliding door for access to seats

I'm thinking Kia Sedona, Chrysler Grand Voyager, am also looking at American Dayvans, eg GMC Safari, Chevrolet Astro.

Budget is the critical factor - from £1k upto about £2.5k ish

Now does anyone want to suggest to buy, suggest to avoid, things to look for?????

All help greatly received, just don't suggest I buy a Mondeo.....:-) Read more

had an 806 diesel for 7 yrs ? (P - 52) did around 150k, then started to become expensive, new clutch new engine eventually swapped for an Espace, had more trouble in 6 months than I did in 7 yrs. Don't know what you'd get for that price thou -100k car?

For a couple of months the EML has been coming on intermittently, more in town use rather than on motorways etc. Had fault checked at both independent and dealer and both times told rear o2 sensor (have replaced this) and fan not working speed3 although it is. Each occasion charged for diagnostics and told engine running ok. Still get EML (or Bob as we've taken to calling it) coming on then off with no apparent pattern - tends not to come on when on long run eg motorway or out of town or until engine warm. Temperature gauge fluctuates but stays between 1/4 and 1/2 way points on any journey. Is it EMU fault? Is Bob destined to stay in our lives? Read more

I am purchasing a nearly new ford fiesta from Motorpoint. It has the balance of the manufacturers warranty and I agreed over the phone to the offer to purchase an extended warranty, which now i don't think i really need. Haven't signed anything, going to do that in the next few days. I have just paid a deposit, can i say no thanks to the extended warranty? Thanks. Read more

As my wife's car is due to be changed we arranged test drives for the two we had shortlisted on consecutive days during our lunch breaks. The first was at the Honda dealer where we arrived at the appointed time only to be told that someone would be with us in a minute. After 10 minutes we were told that someone else had just gone out for a test drive in the Jazz and they didn't have another one available. We were told that they should only be a few minutes so we waited for another 10 before giving up and leaving.

The following day we had arranged a test drive at the Skoda dealer so again we arrived at the time arranged and were met with the salesman who handed us the keys to a Fabia Greenline. He said that he knew we wanted the 1.4 TDi Fabia 2 but the Greenline was the only diesel Fabia available that day but he could arrange for the exact model to be available in a few days. Anyway, we liked the car but said we would like to drive the model we were thinking of buying. This was arranged for Saturday morning and when we got there it was ready and waiting for us. The salesman said to take it for as long as we wanted, so we had a good long relaxed test drive.

Guess which we ordered?

I know you don't have to like the salesman to buy a car
you want but I would travel to another dealer and buy from them instead.

Just make sure you don't cut off your nose to spite your face.

Hi,
There is a previous question about VAT on a new car. I am currently buying a used car (a 6 month old Mondeo) and this has made be wonder about VAT on used cars (I did a quick Google and found people talking about VAT on used cars on other forums).

I have agreed a price for the car, when I go to pay tomorrow am I going to find VAT slapped on top? (please let the answer be no!)

Thanks in advance for any help. Read more

VAT is extremely complicated but I've never heard of anyone being quoted an ex-VAT price
for a car.
It might be itemised out on the invoice but the total will be as agreed.

Phew, that would really have spoilt my day :)

It is an ex-demo car, so I suppose I will be the first private owner (as Alf mentions), but as long as the agreed price includes VAT and it is only a line item on the invoice I guess it doesn't matter.

Thanks for all of your reponses, and thanks for responding quickly, as I was suddenly quite worried. I can get back to enjoying the match now!

Thanks again.

I purchased a pre-owned 2.2 dci SVE model in June and have been experiencing issues with a lumpy gearchange from 1st through to 3rd, but perfect from 4th through to 6th. It has been back to the dealer three times so far. Visit 1 was to lubricate & adjust the external linkage. Visit 2 was to adjust the clutch and vist 3 was to replace the clutch. After now driven the vehicle around for a week there is still an intermittant lumpy feel when changing up from second into third - sometimes having to nurse it in. Not yet experienced the sound of teeth trying to mesh which I was getting before the new clutch.
Has anyone experienced similar gearshift issues? Is this just one of those niggles that comes with this vehicle? Is there an gearbox issue here such as selector or synchr? Any comments please Read more

Try a gearbox oil change ensuring the latest spec oil for that particular vehicle. I had a sticky 4th to 3rd on a Sorento with 30K on the clock. Fresh oil - smooth as silk.

Ive said before that st navs have to be used as a aid - not a whole tool if they are used as a aid i find them fantastic for navigating around citys that ive no experience of
however for people that just stop in a dual carrigway (as mentioned above) becasue the st nav has no signal that that is just silly, and dangerous.

What happens if an order for a new car is placed before the VAT change takes place but delivery is afterwards?

Are buyers forced to pay an extra 2.5% in VAT?

Will dealers agree to a contract which freezes the price (inv VAT) at the time of placing the order so that the VAT increase (and any manufacturer price increase, come to that) has no impact? Read more

They haven't said what it's going up to yet, have they?

My tax colleagues were speculating on 20%.

Wish I'd done a bit more research (eg Googled "Espace problems") before buying 2005 2.2dci from a crook last November but....

Already been through the usual cracked inlet manifold at 70k miles - fixed by Renault France - and all has been fine for 12k since then and I do like the car.

Now couple of dashboard issues I'm hoping you guys might be able to help with:

The car lives in the Alps during the winter and when it is very cold (less than -6 degrees say) both ESP and ABS lights are illuminated on starting - which is a bit disconcerting on icy roads! This doesn't happen when it is any warmer than this, and even if it warms up a bit between starts they don't come on second time round.

Today the Low Tyre Pressure message came on when started and indicates front offside (LHD car) on the diagram. It was a bit down but now 2.5 bar as per manual but the message still comes on and the tyre on the diagram is still lit - even though the computer reads the tyre pressure as 2.5.

Finally, the car was originally registered in Belgium (now on French plates) and all the dash messages are in Flemish. Is it possible to get the language changed to English (or French)? Not a massive issue or something I'm going to spend a lot of money on - but any suggestions welcome.

Thank you very much!!!
